KJV and the Religious Right!

I wonder how the Religious Right take this verse from the KJV

Matthew 5:46For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

Those crazy publicans...

Yeah, that will probably take them by surprise. Evangelicals would never read the New Testament.

I despise fundamentalist, evangelical Christians as much as anyone, but this passage would be extremely easy to distort. A lot of these people are really just uneducated followers, but the thing that makes them scary is they have leaders are extremely gifted in selling illogical explanations for Biblical passages that on the surface seem pretty clear cut(to someone with a more educated view of theology). In any case, I don't think quoting Matthew to an Evangelical is going to send him into a spiritual crisis.

Proverbs 31:6-7 (KJV)

Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

Now, that's quite a real-world passage there. If your buddy's bumming, give him something to drink. Wonder how many sermons have included that particular idea, though?

Dude, you really need to come to my church.

That's the fun of going to a church led by a cranky old former Jesuit seminary professor who knows all this stuff backward and forward in four different languages. There's nothing like an afternoon of Bible study, church, then blue crabs and beer while you discuss the topic of the day.

Your church sounds like fun, Frank. I worked with Jesuits last year - they can be really hilarious guys.

Proverbs is in the Tanakh (Old Testament), so Jews have been tossing that one around for centuries. I imagine there's mountains of commentary out there.
