Black Book!

I just saw that Paul Verhooven's Black Book is coming out on DVD today. I had no idea. This is a really amazing film and I was one of the few people that apparently got the chance to see it (one of the great things about living in Chicago is we get the small films).

If you haven't seen it then go rent it or buy it.

Why did it do so badly in the theaters?

It didn't do badly, considering. It's a foreign film about the Nazis, it was never going to make hand-over-fist money.

But it is amazing.

There was even a filmstrip image with the cover of BLACK BOOK up for a day or two for the last Special Edition.

But that requires reading the main page.

Out of the three orders I placed with Amazon this week, the one with Black Book looks like the only one I'll see from them this week. On Blu-ray. Lookin forward to pube bleaching in HD.

Unfortunately I don't get to check CHUD everyday 'cause of my work so I probably missed it. Oh well, shit happens.

$24mil worldwide total, with 4 of that from here (U.S.).
I'm sure it made it's budget back, but still disappointing given that it was Verhooven returning to form and being at the top of his game.

What does this say about Valkyrie's potential? Sure it has Tom Cruise in it...but still, it's a movie about Nazis.

I don't think it being a nazi movie had much to do with its box office. I mean period movies do turn certain people off. It was billed as an arthouse film, wasn't it. Limited release. Not a lot of advertising. I know I didn't know what it was about before I saw it.

I'm guessing it's the crap-shower that did it.

No way. If people had known about that it would have done Boffo business. Especially for the scat crowd.

I was fortunate enough to see this movie while it was still in theatres, just an awesome movie with many twists. Congrats Paul - we've missed your work(this fully makes up for that abomination known as Hollow Man).

Really fun flick. Looking forward to seeing more of Ms. Van Houten. Er, not that this film wasn't pretty thorough.

Yeah, they should've marketed this more widely. Really, it was like an old-time Hollywood spy film filtered through Verhoeven's crazy mind. It's got it all- Nazis, poop, sex, intrigue, suspense, double crosses, war and chocolate!

Feh! I've been to 4 different Best Buys and it's always been sold out. Guess I'll have to go the online route.

Yes, just wathced this. It speaks volumes about who is the bad guy or good guy and other moral dilemmas.

The biggest thing that elicited a "Holy Fucking Shit" was at the very end when the family entered the kibbutz and the explosions were heard. That bit of scene alone is layered like an onion. I interpret it as saying that she went from one warzone into another (thereby saying that conflict is eternal), or as possibly saying that in conflicts (in the movie it was WWII and a bit of the Holy Land) it is really hard to say who is on the side of what is right.

Fucking awesome film, and Verhoevan's (sp?) best. I haven't bought a DVD in awhile . . I think I'll be heading out to pick this one up pronto.

Saw this recently through Netflix and liked it a lot. Glad to see Verhoven back doing movies the way he wants.

p.s. when the farm house blew up (all partical) in the beginning I was in awe.

Yeah, I wondered if the bomber was CG, but it was the real thing. Wonder where they got it.

When I watched the DVD I wanted to kick my own ass so hard for missing this in theaters. Verhoeven truly is back on top of his game. And Van Houten is such a combination of talent, looks and fearlessness in this movie that she just takes your breath away. I can't recommend Black Book enough.

I got to see this on the big screen at the Helsinki International Film Festival and I'm glad I did, even though the dvd is just around the corner. One of the best movies I saw there.

Yeah, I love the fact that almost all of the effects (if not all of them) were done practically. It's just amazing.

Interesting trivia I saw on IMDB:
With a budget of approx. 16 million euros, this is the most expensive Dutch movie to date.

That's what? about $25mil U.S. dollars?

You just know if it was produced in the states it would have cost like nearly $100mil

This movie is incredible. Anyone who is debating whether or not to watch this should realise that it's an amazingly entertaining as well a powerful film. It's a period piece and an acclaimed art film, and that may make some weary, but really it's a tight, well-paced and excting film.
