I need a new cd, jerks.

Ok, I'm working from home as a result of being sick the last few days, but I'm on my work computer, which hurts for music. So, somebody needs to recommend me a good, recent album that I probably haven't heard. I've listened to The Stage Names like, 70 times in a row on repeat.
Have you heard the soundtrack from Once yet?

I bought it, but I refuse to listen until I see the film.
Is this music to do work to? or just anything.
I was going to recommend the greatest album in the history of music. But then you had to go and call me a jerk. You cut me deep, LD.
It may be an obvious choice, but I've listened to Icky Thump about 300 times over the last month or so. So, I'd recommend that. I'm also quite fond of the new Dropkick Murphys disc.

New Beirut.

That being said, Misfit recommended the Drive-By Truckers' "Decoration Day" to me a few weeks ago, and it knocked my socks off. If hard-boiled, gritty Southern rock is your thing, give it a try.

The new Beirut was yesterday's album of choice. It's good, but not mind-blowing. I feel like he's got better in him.

Decoration Day is great (I mean, if you can hate Outfit, I don't like you), but I got it.

I think every woman I meet got the newsletter that I'm a total jerk. It would go a long way towards explaining my current singlehood.

The National Lights album is outstanding, really worth a listen. Essentially it's just a collection of bluegrass songs, but with lyrics that would make Nick Cave go 'shit dude, that's twisted'.
I'm still really digging Eliza Gilkyson's "Your Town Tonight" as I'm waiting for the new PJ Harvey to drop next week...

So, try that one on, maybe? Listen to a few clips or whatever.
New Sean Hayes...or if you want just stripped down acoustic, try his album "Lunar Lust"

Holy crap, I just read some reviews. It actually sounds interesting, but I don't know if I can combine it with work. I'm going to have to give it a listen, though.

What kind of music?

Well, thanks for making me feel bad about my more pedestrian choices.
Who are the jerks now, jerks?
YOU ARE!

HA...actually, I went right to buy it, but the Amazon MP3 store doesn't have it, and I'm not paying 16.99 for it. I thought that was a great suggestion.

Oh, and the jerk store called. They're all out of you.

Oh jeez, I didn't even notice they had a new one out till you mentioned that. Is it at all comparable to say.. Blackout? Because I love the hell out of that cd..

I guess I'll recommend Absolute Garbage (if you like their stuff) because.. well.. it's what I'm listening to right now, and I can never think of other songs when I'm listening to something at the same time

I'd say it's most reminiscent of "Sing Loud, Sing Proud" and much less poppy than "The Warrior's Code".

Oh, and LD, words can hurt, man, words can hurt.

I got The National Lights on Spike's recommendation, and I was blown away.

Jason Isbell's solo album is terrific.

My favorite album this year, however, is The Fratellis' COSTELLO MUSIC. The best hooky pop rock I've heard yet this year.

Not exactly new, but my morning jacket - z is one of the best albums ever

Z is a great album, no doubt.

Ok, so emusic has The National Lights, and it's on its way. I've got some trepidation about this though. I'm going to get The Fratellis sometime soon, because that sounds like something I might be interested in.

Isbell is the goods. I saw him in concert back in June.

The only CD in this thread I really don't want is Sean Hayes.

Ok, I've made my purchases:

The National Lights - The Dead Will Walk, Dear
Doveman - With My Left Hand I Raise the Dead
Office - A Night at The Ritz (I've been waiting for this forever, and it's an emusic advance album!)
Broken Social Scene Presents: Kevin Drew - Spirit If...

I'm sick. But, emusic makes my sickness affordable.

Shouldn't be a problem since you're their biggest seller! Now before you quip about having sex with my wife, I'm going to recommend Carnavas by The Silversun Pickups.
I've had the exact same problem with The Stage Names as of late, LD. Right now, I'm rummaging through iTunes, which has landed me on The Cure covering "Love Will Tear Us Apart." I just listened to Calexico cover it also and, incidentally, they win.

(Now it's Christina Aguilera and "Ain't No Other Man.")

Might I suggest my favorite local band, Decibully? They're kind of - kind of - a slightly crunchy Radiohead-sounding-type-thing. Here's their myspace page. I'm fairly certain they're available on emusic (seems to me I got a live show off of there).

Admit it, you think it's "high brow" television.

In all seriousness, I will bring Sean Hayes to your place and shove it down your throat, FUCKER.

You should also check out some Damien Jurado, older stuff. It's more upbeat than his new LP, which is all acoustic. "I Break Chairs" is always good for a spin or two when I'm out in the city.
I saw Damien Jurado open for Okkervil River last week. He seemed kind of scared of the audience.

edit - I also saw him after the show, on the steps of the theatre, trying to get himself some groupie. It looked like it was going well.

You know, today has really pointed out one issue to me: AmazonMP3 is a waste of time unless you want to buy a Rihanna CD. Very little worth buying on that site. I mean, I guess you could like The Apples In Stereo, but...ehhhh.

Oh, and the WiFi iTunes store showed up on my phone today. I was hoping to find a way to go broke while I was on the move.

Musicians and their groupies. Of course, the drummer always has to settle.

I don't think Jurado is opening for them Sunday. Speaking of: Hey Soul...want to go see Okkervil River on Sunday?
I just checked out the previews of that National Lights record on iTunes. It didn't sound like bluegrass to me, but the samples might not have been representative.

Anyway, I'm interested in learning more.

Was it mostly electric or acoustic? And I'm NOT talking about the show...ZING!..

Ahem, seriously, was he at least good? I badly want to see him play "Paperwings" and "I Am the Mountain" live.

Well, shit. If Jurado's opening, then yes. Are you already going to see them?

I beg your pardon...

Thanks to whoever it was that brought up The Fratellis. I'm listening to Chelsea Dagger, which is the best. part. of that album (the album, btw, is very hit or miss, but, jeez, when it hits, watch out).

Kind of unremarkable, I'd say, though I'm not very familiar with his studio work. It was a three-piece band with him, and the other two members kept shifting from drums to electric guitar to keys (no bass). It was a generally pretty sleepy set, though. It was hard to get excited one way or another about it. Okkervil River was really good, though.

Anything, and I mean ANYTHING, by Rocket From the Crypt. Those guys pack more punch than a Randy Johnson fastball and give you more guilty pleasure than a spanking from your favorite dominatrix.

Yeah, that's unfortunate. He's switched to sleepier music as of his last LP from what was like 3 or so albums of more upbeat stuff. "I Break Chairs," "On My Way To Absence", and "Rehearsals for Departure" are all fantastic albums (though Absence is the best IMO). In any case, I doubt his recent album is as effective live as it is on disc (at night by your lonesome in the dark). Though "Denton, TX" off his latest still can break my heart.

But I guess I'll be the judge, since I'm going sunday.

Wow...The National Lights CD is gorgeous. Luckily, I can't focus too closely on the lyrics, since I'm working. Now I'm really excited for it.

It's like an evil, less-cliche (from a music perspective) Nickel Creek album

I'm gonna suggest Those Poor Bastards - Songs of Desperation.

She's from Austin. This is a live cd, recorded (mostly) at the Cactus Cafe, and is probably a good of introduction as any to her work. Her cover of Dylan's "Jokeman" is pretty damn good and she also covers a couple of her father's songs (he was songwriter, too).

Damn it, I don't write reviews well (I just know what I like/don't like). Here's what Brad Buchholz from austin360.com said:

'Your Town Tonight' - Eliza Gilkyson
Red House
starstarstarstar

Eliza Gilkyson has released the first live album of her career, a cause for great celebration. The live stage has always brought out the best of Gilkyson, for more than 25 years — her vulnerability, her sense of community and courage, her sense of humor, a whisper of delicacy. Her songs glisten all the more for the intimacy.

"Your Town Tonight," recorded primarily at Austin's Cactus Café, captures the spare and gritty essence of Gilkyson in live performance. Be advised: This 14-song collection is in no way "Eliza's greatest hits." Rather, it's a carefully crafted work unified by tone and theme, winding through landscapes of the Old testament, family, the environment, relationship, and these troubled times.

Dad: That's another big one. The presence of Gilkyson's father, the late songwriter Terry Gilkyson, is all over this record. Eliza tells the dark and light aspects of his story in "Easy Rider" and "Beauty Way." She also covers a couple of his songs, including the exquisite "Green Fields," which in her treatment is a plaintive "come home" call as sung by Mother Earth.

Gilkyson's cover of Bob Dylan's "Jokerman," alone, is worth the price of the album. She's performed this song live for years. But her 2007 version is hard-bitten, more quiet and knowing, than the defiant rocking version she sang 20 years ago, in the Reagan era. She also gives us, at long last, a recorded version of "Tennessee Road" — the best song ever written about Elvis Presley, which Gilkyson composed the morning after Presley's death in August 1977.

"Tennessee Road" isn't about the glory of fame, an "All Hail" to the king of rock n' roll. It's more about exhaustion and loneliness and a longing for home. Gilkyson shares the story with tenderness and empathy, touching a truth that's taller than any king.

Recommended: "Jokerman" and "Tennessee Road"

I know that listening to a live album is a different experience, but MMJ's "Okonokos" is also quite great.

15 BIG ONES/LOVE YOU by the Beach Boys.

Produced during the depths of Brian Wilson's screaming madness. Apart from having the hilariousest album cover ever, it contains a bone-chilling love ode to Johnny Carson...

He sits behind his microphone
He speaks in such a manly tone

... and creepy paedophilic overtones, such as the instance in the song Roller Skating Child in which Wilson vows to have sex with a roller skating child.

No, it's not exactly new, but I wanted to write about it. Fuck you too.

Glad you like it, National Lights are a group I'm desperate to get people listening to. There album's probably the best thing I've heard this year.

Swimming in the Swamp is one of my favourite songs on the album, and it's also the most immediately disturbing as their gallows lyrics aren't particularly subtle. Although within the scope of the song the lack of subtley really works.

I gotta go with Iron and Wine The Shepherd's Dog or for something a little more soulful The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster from Ruthie Foster. New Steve Earle, Washington Square Serenade, kicks ass as does Lyle Lovett's It's Not Big, It's Large

ETA: New Foo Fighters is fun.
