It's a while off, but we should be getting some exclusive content for you folks.

Sounds Like System Shock and that's always a good thing in my book. Now if only EA would use the System Shock license they have I'd be really happy.

Funny you say that- rumors have been flying all over the place that this will be basically be System Shock 3, since EA's doing nothing with the license.
Eh, as it appears to play something like Resident Evil 4, that kind of takes a good chunk of System Shockiness out of it. Not that this doesn't look interesting, I just doubt this was ever intended to be SS3.

Fixed.

Yes, I know SS came first but we all know EA saw the cash and critical acclaim that came with abusing Big Daddies and started a mad dash to create a clone.
Supposedly they've been working on SS3 quietly for a couple of years now; I wonder if this is what it ended up as?
It's a pity this isn't on a format I currently own, but I have hopes.
You don't own a XBox 360, PS3, or PC? Are you a Mac user?
Is the website in that preview correct? Is it supposed to take me to an astronomy website?
The lastest Game Informer has a big write-up on this game, and it sounds pretty hot.
Weird,I guess the site was down.I just tried the link and it works now.Cool looking website.

I'm fairly certain development didn't start on this three weeks ago. BioShock was well under the mainstream radar until reviews and the demo rolled out.
Read Game Informer. MCP makes it sound like this is breaking news, but this game was the last issue's giant cover story. Sweet looking game. Part Event Horizon, part the Thing. I'm sold.

Game Informer got an exclusive on it.... magazines need those to validate their existence these days. The press release hit this week, so it actually was breaking news.

My PC is... a little out of date by now.

Isaac Clarke? Seriously?

Isaac Asimov...

Arthur C. Clarke...

Interesting combination. Throw in some Dead Rising style shenanigans, and I'm there.

New clips and a new website- http://chud.com/articles/articles/13...INE/Page1.html

I really hope this works out. We all need some new horror titles.

New videos, including an animated comic.

(edit: the embedded videos don't seem to be working, so I just threw up links)
I'm chomping at the bit for this. Thanks for the update, Alex.
The thing is, making a genuinely scary video game is a very easy thing to do -- when one has a personal investment in trying to keep their character alive, scaring the player is a piece of cake. The problem is that most survival horror games these days don't even make any attempt to do so (as much as I loved Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil 4, those were more about atmosphere and straight up action than any kind of scares), so I'm very glad to see the developers of this one state that as their primary intention from the start.

EA Redwood has a spotty history (they were last responsible for The Simpsons Game), but I remain optimistic about this one. Besides, I need something to look forward to now that I've finished Autos 4.
I agree, horror is easy. Horror with a smart, and interesting plot is harder.

I want to play this but I hate EA and really torn on getting it.

I don't agree that it's easy to scare a gamer. It may be easy to do jump scares, sure- same applies for film. But for a game to really get into your mind and truly fuck with you a lot of things have to click into place- the music (or lack thereof), the sense of dread, the fear of what's in the shadows around you. Twisted imagery doesn't hurt.

A lot of horror games just throw things at you to freak you out but it'll only work a few times, and usually rings hollow. The Silent Hills and Fatal Frames are much more rare. I'm hoping this game's one of those... and judging from the video of the guy sweeping his flashlight along the empty space station... it looks like it could be.

If all goes well I'll be going to another Community Day for this game in a few months and getting some playtime with it... I really am hoping for the best. They all know me as the horror nut over there so hopefully they'll really try to impress us.
I know there is an IDW comic associated with this coming out by Ben Templesmith......not sure when it is hitting, though?

Oh and V.T., that comic's been out! 3 issues so far. They look like they're going to keep doing the movies on the website for each one as well... the latest is linked in that article.
Looks freaky. I dig how the creatures keep coming even after losing legs/limbs. Looks especially important to keep your back against the wall, as they'll get you from behind (especially if you're not thorough and you leave some "survivors").

I imagine/hope this will come to PC at some point in 2010.
I'm reasonably excited about this project. I'm really hoping it's not just Doom with unkillable monsters, though, because I'm sensing an awful lot of boiler rooms from those videos.

I knew Sunshine would be up there after seeing that one trailer. Good to see the rest of the influence list though, looks like they've done their homework.

I figure this has got to be either a red herring, or someone at the company mixed up their netflix return with the competition pile.

This game's incredibly fun. Brilliant creature and sound design... can't wait to get my hands on the final copy. Full articles and exclusive interviews coming soon !
Between the comics, the developer diaries and the gameplay videos, I'm loving what they're doing with this game.
That 'influences' list looks like an all-encompassing nerd potpourri. Aliens should be stricken from the list. No more space marines!

Anybody here a fan of the PS2 The Thing game?
Looking forward to whatever you write-up about this game, Alex.

Myself, I need to catch up with the animated comics and the developer diaries.

Besides the comics, they'll be providing some additional backstory in this animated movie:

Apparently Warren Ellis had a hand in this as well.

I doubt there will be much answers given your great article on this one, Alex (you lucky man, you, getting to play this one early)...although I do have to ask about your toughts on the enemy A.I; Do they just charge and attack, do they act differently in groups or depending to their species and so on; if they are at least as good as the Ganados were in RE4 (who didnt get ambushed or flanked by those bastards a couple times?) this could be pure greatness.
Also bonus question: Besides "The Thing", any sci-fi or horror movie influences/references you noticed on the game's design and feel?

Whilst I appreciate it's just a render - awesome.

Those things (leapers) are pretty nasty. They crawl around on their arms and leap from this scorpion-like tail that looks to be an extension of their spine. They have no lower bodies. Pretty fast though, and I found that taking one of their arms out slowed them down a bunch.

I only got a chance to see most of the early enemies, and to be honest, they mostky just advanced on you. A couple of times I cleared out most of a room of slashers and the last one scurried away into a vent, which sucked, because that sucker popped out of another vent later on in the game and scared me silly.

They do group up on you pretty easy, though. Sound's going to be key to telling where everything is on this one. There are other things later on that you'll have to worry about like these huge vampire bat looking things that stick its proboscis in the heads of dead bodies and creates slashers. You have to be certain to kill those bastards quick, because there tends to be a lot of bodies laying around...

As for other movie references, Blade Runner was an initial influence on the designs of the environments, but they moved from that to and made it more of an industrial design, influenced by gothic architecture. There's ribs over pretty much everything (that reminds some of Alien/Aliens). You also can definitely see some of Sunshine (especially the hydroponics lab) but honestly most of the influence is clearly from games. The 3rd person over the shoulder from Resident Evil 4, the audio/video logs from Bioshock/System Shock, etc.

Also, I got my hands on this sweet little hardcover art book that'll supposedly be included if you preorder the game. Hopefully they won't be doing another 10 buck extra special edition for this one, but if you can get your hands on it, definitely go for it. Sweet little book with lots of awesome creature designs.

(EDIT- Yeah, looks like if you preorder it you get the art book. Definitely get on that if you're interested in this game.)

Shit. I thought this was going to be like Dark Sector. If it's turning out to be a surprise a la RE4 I might be slightly inclined to purchase.

PC October 21st.
Oh, i love you.
I was so worried i wasn't going to be able to play this. Sounds amazing.
There was a pretty nifty zero-g environment level in Crysis as well, but this looks even more fun. Great write-up, Alex.
That level killed my pc every time i played it. I could only play for like half hour intervals before it would shut down. I didn't like the "Abyss" looking aliens particularly, but the level was fun. Hell, the whole game was amazing.

See, that's what I get for not being able to play new games on my PC! Hadn't even heard of that.

Thanks for reading though, guys!

Isn't Crysis being adapted to consoles now?

I started the game again a few days ago, on veteran. No crosshair, less ammo, enemies speak only korean. It's great.

Still just rumors, unfortunately.

One thing I found weird is that they aren't going to be making a demo of Dead Space. It worked damn well for Bioshock, and I'm assuming that most people would have bought the game after being teased with the first level and seeing how damn good it is.

Hell, I gotta try that.

And yeah, no demo is a shame. I was gonna buy Bioshock regardless, but that demo sold several of my friends who were undecided. Still, can't wait to play this this Halloween.
