EA's Dead Space - Page 2

Why do this and F3 have to come out the same month. Thanks for the write up though Alex, this has jumped up into the can't wait pile along with the previously mentioned F3.

Exclusive Interview with Ian Milham, art director- http://chud.com/articles/articles/15...ACE/Page1.html

Really cool guy that was more than generous with all of us. Also gave us a tour of the offices, which was beyond awesome.

Also, if any of you have even heard of Shadow Madness before, you can join our exclusive club.
Great interview. After the assness that was Siren, I'm hoping this will be the first playable survival horror game of the generation.

Dig the audio logs.

This website is awesome. Are there any plans to have any of the backstory in-game, maybe like how BioShock did it?

I look forward to finding a line cutter and fucking up some space zombies. Anyone figure out Greggs' password yet?

Well there is plenty of backstory that you can pick up on- audio and video and text logs that you can find. There's supposed to be hundreds of people on that ship who were turned into these Necromorphs, though, so there's plenty of potential stories you could hear about. Apparently some of the stuff from the site will be referenced in the game, which is awesome.

I'm not surprised to hear about China, but Japan? I didn't realize they got antsy about video game violence.

Awesome news.

Review build finally arrived today. Only about an hour in, but I really dig it. As long as the tension keeps cranking up, this could be great. Love the art and audio design. (Though the acting for your other two original crewmembers...ech.)

Too bad the game's being dropped into the October/November maelstrom.

Holy crap, I just looked at my calendar.

10/14 Dead Space
10/21 Little Big Planet
10/28 Fallout 3
11/4 Resistence 2

I'm going to go broke again.

Well, you'll save some money by avoiding Resistance and Little Big Planet, but you'll be replacing them with Far Cry 2, Mirror's Edge, Saints Row 2, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2, and possibly Fable 2, so I don't know if you'll be coming out ahead.

I'd much rather play this than either Fallout or Resistance.

Also: fuck Gears.

Truth is, while yes, 'fuck Gears', while I was in SF at Nintendo's event last week a lot of other people were doing the review playthrough of GoW2 and had good things to say. People who didn't like the first said this one is much better paced with more variety in setpieces, etc. If, when it comes out, the game is actually a superior sequel, I reserve the right to retract or amend this statement.
I dunno. Level variety and pacing weren't my problems with the game. But, hey, I'd like to eat a big steaming bowl of my words next month, too.

It's not as though you don't have plenty of options to keep you busy while we wait to see how GeOW2 turns out. Yet another jam packed holiday season.
I'm both glad to hear that Dead Space appears to be great and also infuriated that it's coming out now. Because against the likes of SR2, Fable II and Left4Dead it's a definite rental rather than a launch day buy. Essentially any non-online enabled game has been pushed back to early next year in my 'too play' list.

8.7 is about right, at least from my perspective. (Chapter 8 out of 12.)
It looks terrific. Can't wait to try it out. Need to clear some room in the hard drive.
Playing right now. I don't know if there's a beat or element that isn't borrowed or recycled from somewhere else, but the thing taken as a whole is fun and super atmospheric. The look of it is really amazing -- a perfect continuation of the aesthetic of ALIEN.
How does it stack up against other SF horror titles (Doom and Prey, for instance)?
I saw Alex was online playing this tonight. I shook my fist at the screen, just so you know.

Much more survival horror, much less action. Although there's plenty of that. I just got stabbed to pieces by a particularly nasty creature, and I laughed my head off. Never liked getting killed in a game as much as this one... there's so many different ways to go!

So far-

Decapitated
Arm Bitten off
Blasted to pieces by asteroids
Sliced in half (with intestines pouring out!)
Flambéed in hull breach
Proboscis through the head

I almost want to let one of those little fuckers burrow into my body just to see what happens.

Loving this so far.

Hahahaha. I turned off my notifications cause everyone was sending me messages of hate and jealousy. Also, cause I'm playing it in the dark with surround sound and didn't want notifications to break me out of it... this sucker's atmospheric as hell.

As someone who will get it a week later after you gringos, I deeply considered sending you some hate messages...but those in game deaths will saciate my thirst for your blood, you lucky, lucky bastard.
Glad to hear the game is great, Alex.

Better.

And there's more action starting about halfway through. I went from never even coming close to running out of ammo to being completely fucked.

Sold. I need to hurry the hell up and beat Silent Hill.

That's great news. Nothing destroys tension more than predictable and plentiful action beats. I really loved Prey, but like almost every story-driven SF/Horror FPS (and most FPSs, really), it has a hard time living up to the promise of its first few hours. Looks like Saint's Row 2 will have to wait a few weeks.

Is there any way of putting it totally in 'First-Person', like with some games?
...or is it just strictly 'Third'?

$10 gift card from Circuit City with purchase of Dead Space.

No.

You wouldn't want first person anyway, it's interesting to see Isaac's reaction to situations. He jumps and flinches as much as you do. Plus, the deaths!

Just finished it. 10 1/2 hours, although I had played through 3 of the 12 chapters before and knew what to do. There's a bit of incentive to play through again, though. Damn good game.... interesting how it gets less and less scary as it goes on and you start to know exactly how to kill every creature, though.12
post #90 of 405
With all the games that have midnight releases this sure as shit should have one. It's got fucking zombies in space! Come on!

Fuckin Best Buy shows the release date as the 15th. What the shit?
My final time was about 12.5 hours, though there was probably some 'Isaac standing around while I'm on the phone' time in there.

I love a lot of aspects, and I was hooked on the action all the way through, but the boss battles need to be better, and the story wasn't all that much to write home about. I can't imagine that all the comics/movie stuff is any good at all.

I can see playing through the game again, though, perhaps to get the 'single weapon' achievement.

Actually, the animated comics are pretty good. In fact, they made me wish that some of the game took place in the comic's setting.
Thread Starter
It does. The comics are a direct prequel to the game... there are even some characters you'll read about (or watch, if you check out the animated ones) that show up in some of the logs you pick up in the game.

The second time through is much different, so far. Lot less scary now that you know what everything is, and you keep the upgrades to your weapons and suit. I didn't get all the weapon kills from the game so I'm doing that instead of going for the one gun achievement... guess I'll have to do a third playthrough.

Also, there's a new suit that you can download in the marketplace. One free console specific one (mine your face light Xbox green) and one "Scorpion" one that costs 200 points. Wank.
And I guess that's the way to go to get the 'one gun' achievement -- do it with the second play when you can easily have the thing maxed out to full.

Which I'll have to wait to do, since I finished the game on my debug console, and saves (and achievements, dammit!) don't carry over to the retail console. I'll still try to migrate my finished save, though....
Looks like a decent rental - considering this is EA though, I am afraid that any money I given them will be used on their quest of taking over the world....

Just to add a comment on the free console specific suits - the description of the one on the Xbox Live Marketplace said free for a limited time only. So even if you aren't getting the game right away, you may want to grab this freebie. The Scorpion suit is the one that EB/Gamestop was offering as a preorder incentive.

To Alex and Russ, any idea how these alternate suits work? Would you select them when starting a game? I noticed the descriptions for each say they are level 5 suits, with upgrades like additional inventory slots.

I finally preordered this game at Best Buy over the weekend, to get that nifty artbook that had been previously mentioned. I don't think it will be available for pickup until tomorrow - Best Buy and Circuit City sales ads said Wednesday.

That art book is awesome.

No idea how the suit works on a first playthrough, but if you already have the level 5 suit you can buy the downloadable one for 0 credits at the store. Not sure how that'd work the first time since you don't get that suit till closer to the end of the game.

Anyway, my review- http://chud.com/articles/articles/16...ACE/Page1.html

What do you guys think of that TIPS thing? Thought it might be cool.
Great Review Alex.
I can't fucking wait. I just hope my system can handle it right. I don't want to have to downgrade the graphics.
Excellent review, Alex. For the record, I liked the TIPS thing.

I may have to reconsider purchasing this; I was going to hold off and try and catch up on other games, but this looks like it's too much damn fun.
