As a side note, the :-) didn't really get widespread use until the early 90's. Previous to that, most of the old school digital communicators added a <G> to indicate smiling ("grinning") and/or joking.

I do hate that, though. A little picture of a smilie face makes it look a lot more emphatic than I tend to want. A little is nothing, it could mean I'm smirking. It could mean "look, I'm using stupid internet smilie's when I actually don't give a fuck."

When it's a little picture, all that subtlety goes out the window. Now there's a little yellow guy, and what he conveys no matter what is absolute warmth, welcoming, and an overwhelming sense of "I love you and I love what you said, hehee." Fine when you're chatting with your girl. Sucks when it's your boss/co-workers.

This rant was partially in jest. Figure out the ratio yourself. It's a game!

Ok, I can't edit my post from this computer for some reason. But seriously, check out my original post. See that little yellow fuck? That's the kind of crap I'm talking about.

That was supposed to be just a ":" and a ")" and now look how goddam irritatingly happy it is.
