Dearest Chewers

A thought, a note.

Please do not litter threads with comments such as "I should see that" or "Fuck, I want to see that but I can't." No one cares. Are you trying to boost your post count or are trying to shame yourself into seeing something? For the most part (unless the film is only in New York and LA, or not on DVD) then do some legwork or wait patiently. Otherwise, no one cares.
I don't think they're trying to boost their post count, I think they're merely trying to express their excitement about the film. You're right, but I don't think that it's too big of a problem. At the very least, it's easy to ignore.
I'm kind of busy right now, but, damn, I can't wait to read this thread later. I've been hearing good things about it.
I hope when this is adapted into a movie, it rules. Fuck, I can't wait to see it.

I have friends who have done heroin. I have not. I have been offered it, I passed, because it's fucking heroin. I was telling a story about a night out with a junkie to group of people and one responded about how they had never done drugs because of a PSA they had seen as a child. Which was fine, but then they kept going on about it. To quote THE MACK: "You hear grown folks talking, shut the fuck up."

Also, please don't litter threads with comments like "I liked that movie" or "I didn't like that movie". It's obvious everyone has opinions and I can't be bothered to wade through endless postings about how you feel about movies to get to the good stuff.
In all fairness, if I lived somewhere where I was too far to see something fucking awesome, I'd bitch about it constantly too.

Let's make a thread that lists potential Dellamorte bait threads.

Isn't he the guy who writes articles about boxes? Or was it offices? Offices filled with boxes? Whatever. Boring.
Yeah, he wrote about that movie The Kingdom in this week's article. I totally want to see that, but I just don't have time, so I probably won't. Know what I'm saying?

Hmmm... you're hinting at something, I just don't know what it could be...

I've probably done that. Don't know for sure, but it seems like something I might do if I wasn't thinking and was just trying to express interest in something that might show up in theatres here six months after its US premiere. Sorry, I'll try to do better. But it's not because I'm trying to boost my post count, I can assure you of that.
I did that recently about the Assassination of Jesse James. The fact that this thread now exists doesn't change the fact that I would like to see it... but "fuck", I can't.

A note:

No one should say anything, ever, until it's cleared by at least three CHUD messageboard posters that have at least 11 green boxes. If you're genuinely excited to see a movie that people write about on the site or on the messageboard, fuck you. No one cares.

Backlash. Ha. I think that, whatever one thinks of me, my point is pretty valid. Do you really care that someone is enthused to see something in a post release thread? Do you think it's awesome that someone posts in a thread about, say, Akira Kurosawa that they really want to see Yojimbo but haven't yet? If you are around people who have had experiences, wouldn't you rather absorb the real than comment on your lack?
You guys must be a ton of fun at parties, wandering from group to group telling them what they should be talking about and how they should be talking about it.
I don't normally comment about films that are available on DVD if I haven't seen them, I just see them and join the conversation later. But there's a palpable frustration when they slow-release a film in the NY/LA area and yet the dregs in the middle have to deal with another weekend of THE GAME PLAN or RESIDENT EVIL: THE SUCKOPALYPSE. I'll post something like that because I'm pissed off that it's not released wide. I don't live in Yokelville (although I'm certain people will say that), I'm in Houston, Texas, the fourth largest city in the country. We may not be industry, but I would think that we warrant being part of the release tier. I like how Ebert does it - if it's not released in Chicago, he doesn't write about it. That gets the studios impetus to release it in Chicago, at least.

And no, I'm not about to move to NY/LA. So until the studios treat my location with some dignity, and maybe get some real world input on their movies instead of the assorted punditry, I'm gonna write about my lack of ability to see a certain movie. I only wrote about INTO THE WILD because I saw it at a press screening here in town on Thursday. I don't know where others are coming from, but that's why I post like that.
How much effort does it take to skip past a post where someone wishes they could see a movie? Is it really ruining your enjoyment of the thread that much? Is it really that bad to see how many people are interested in seeing the movie?

It's just such a weird thing to bitch about.

Oh please, Dickson. I'm sure their way of confronting people at a party consists of muttering something into their beer, averting eye contact and leaving the room.

It's almost like a real-life application/version of the "Ignore List". I wonder if that's where the CHUD MB function got its name from.

The routine of CHUD staff talking down to the message board readers is really getting old. If feels like there is this attitude that you guys know best in all respects and to be honest it doesn't have to do with film, who gives a shit what you think. I realize this is actually semi-relevant to film, but it's just so petty that you probably should just keep it to yourself.
Jesus I hate it when people type out their posts. I prefer to stare at a blank page with just a banner ad for Second Sight - A Psycho Psionic Game, no less! - while assuming that people would be discussing things if there were any posts. So much more fun!

I find it even more interesting how some message board members are trying to pander to the wishes and desires of some other message board members.

I was informed at some point you had to have 1500 posts to be a part of the yearly Chud Babe draft. So yes, I'm trying to boost my post count. My three year plan is going swimmingly, as a matter of fact. With any luck, I can be eligible about the time some of those cuties on Nickelodeon are legal.

It takes very little effort to skip, but it takes some effort to actually do it (I would think) and why would you post that? I don't get adding nothing to a conversation. And I'm not surprised Dickson and Clark want to intimate that this is not only a groupthink, but also that I'm an anti-social whatever. The truth of the matter is I try not to suffer fools gladly in all aspects of my life. I thought most people felt that way. I find it weird that people are upset at me for suggesting something I thought was common sense. If you have nothing to say, why keep talking? It's like the Thumper thought process.
It's about people trying to support the Chud staff. Devin and Russ make a big deal about 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' so people post to say that they've heard the information and they view Devin and Russ as arbiters of good taste and as such are excited for the film. It's like people saying 'great review' in the Post Release/DVD Review threads.
They DO have something to say, just not something you care to listen to (or read, as the case may be). How is expressing frustration that an anticipated film is unavailable in your area any different from the myriad "Oh I'm SO looking forward to this film!" posts that inevitably pop up in every single review that's posted here? Gee, you're on a movie board, and you're excited about a movie! No kidding! What's the difference?

This actually sounds like you're looking out for the best interests of the posters under scrutiny here. Quite the opposite vibe from your initial complaint.

EDIT: Spike & Dickson kinda sum it up. It's validation. MB applauses or boos, etc.

EDIT 2: Maybe there should be a rating system for the articles?

"Less Posting, More Lurking"

A sound philosophy for any message board. Will there be t-shirts?
You know, if I'm with a group of friends, and several of us are talking about a movie, and one person says: "Oh, I've heard good things about that; I really want to see it," I don't think they're harming the conversation. And I don't think that allowing them to continue to speak means that I'm suffering a fool. Seems to me, Andre, that you either have impossibly high standards for your friends and conversations, or you're kind of a jerk.

(Or this whole thing is just a wannabe Devin bait thread, in which case, how sad.)

Amen. And please don't start a thread to complain that nobody contribute to some pre/post release thread about some movie that plays in 6 theaters across the continent.

I don't know. Maybe a "Can't Wait/Who Cares" POLL at the bottom. I was posing the question. I didn't claim to have a solution.

Vaguely "Psycho Killer"-ish, if you believe David Byrne.

Dearest Chewers,

Please stop attempting to make "requests" of other board members, because you come across as a self-obsessed bastard with an inflated sense of entitlement. If you think this place is filled with useless posts, please visit the AICN talkbacks for a swift reality check.

Eh, I agree with some of the backlash, but at least he said "please" and called us "dearest". Manners never hurt nobody.

Maybe because presuming that other people's opinions are "nothing" is kinda insulting. Their anticipations, frustrations, or other emotions (shared or not) are perfectly valid. Telling them you don't want to hear it isn't very nice.

I can't wait till the next bait thread. Am I doing it right?

I just figured this out. All the people Dre is talking about keep making his prognostications difficult. He's not sure when a busload of people who live too far away from a release are gonna road trip and shoot his numbers all to hell.

If he never hears from people who wish they could see something or want to see something then he can just focus on the people who will or have seen a flick. Makes his column easier to write.

Can you really blame the man for wanting to make his job easier? Maybe Nick has been giving him shit about his TPS reports.
So this is what happens when Dre isn't defending one of Devin's moronic bait threads. Interesting.

I asked myself that same question while reading your multiple-paragraph armchair psychoanalysis of why Devin bought a "V" Visitor doll.

That's sort of why I don't post very often. I don't get to see a lot of movies in a year because of various things, and as much as I like this community, I feel bad fagging it up with "Oh, that sounds awesome!" type comments in the actual movie-related threads. So I just don't. I guess for some people adding that type of thumbs up/thumbs down comment makes them feel like they are participating. I'm just not that forthcoming. I am very much content in reading about many films, and when I actually have something to say, making a decent post out of it. If I feel like masturbating over a flick I think will be cool or whatever, that shit's more fun to do face to face with your friends than here. I don't think I'd go so far as to crap on anyone for cheerleading though. But I sort of get where Andre is coming from.
