I mentioned this in the Free Comic Book Day thread, but I'm starting a new one.

I like this very much so far!

Fans of Hellboy/BRPD/Planetary, please investigate.

Conceived and written by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance)
First he rips off Pink Floyd and now he's trying to convince a generation of kids that he created the 'Super Powered Misfits who use their talents to destroy evil whilst being ostracised by the outside world' genre of comic books.

The diabolical bastard.

Yeah, it involves that dude. I didn't figure out who he was 'til I'd finished the first issue. They aren't my favorite, but the guy seems to be a decent writer.

It's funny, if you list the elements in this book it sounds completely derivative, and yet it feels fresh and fun when you're reading it, thanks mostly to Way's quirky authorial voice. I'd personally describe it as "Edward Gorey does the X-Men", though Grant Morrison and Mike Mignola are probably going to be the first thing that spring to most people's minds.

Way has also said that this is intended as basically a superhero version of The Royal Tennenbaums. I think the thing that is going to keep the book from seeming stale is that it's going to focus on the grown-up, graduated heroes reuniting rather than being primarily a book about superpowered kids.

Good call on the Gorey influence. That's definitely something that was hovering in the back of my mind.

I picked this up based on Gabriel Ba's art. Probably won't be picking up a second issue. Pretty disappointed that he left Casanova for this.

It's official: I love this series far beyond my ability to objectively explain why. Way has made a comic that's obviously familiar with the various tropes of superhero comics but isn't tied down by them at all. And I love how he's able to work in poignant emotional subtext while keeping everything light and silly on the surface. Just really excellent. I can understand how someone more burnt out on superheroes than I might not be as impressed with this, but I'm loving it.

Dang, I was just at the comic shop tonight, and didn't notice #2 on the shelf. I'll have to pick it up somewhere tomorrow.
