Talk Radio

Didn't know where to post this. Thought about putting this in the politics section but the genre is a little bigger than just politics and I couldn't include far and away my favorite talk radio show. Anyway, here's my list.....

Best Talk Radio Show

Radio Coast to Coast with Art Bell, George Nori, etc...

I love the shit out of this show! If it's paranormal, conspiracy, out there science, it's on this show. I come home late from work alot and this show keeps me wide awake on the ride home. How can you go to sleep at the wheel when there's an ep on EVPs going on?

Worst Talk Radio Show

Conservative Talk Shows.....All of them

This has nothing to do with my politics (well maybe a little) but rather how obnoxious and uncreative all these shows are. There's probably 150 or more broadcasters in the conservative radio sphere and they ALL SAY THE SAME FUCKING THING. The same talking points, the same mouth breathing indignation, the same cheesy openings. Which leads me to my next topic...

Worst Opening For a Talk Radio Show

Hugh Hewitt.....Oh Dear God. The score from Gladiator, sound bites from GWB, it's unspeakable...

Also the tagline "Morning Glory, Evening Grace" ....cheese whiz. Actually the whole conservative talk radio genre is cheesy as hell.

Fave Guilty Pleasure Talk Radio Host

Randi Rhodes

She's just as bad as the Republican Mouth Breathers but sometimes you just need a good dose of pissed off liberalism and nobody does it better than she can. The rest of Air America (are they still on the air btw?) was just one big collection of whiny ass douches in my opinion. Glad they got clobbered. Randi was the exception.

Anyway, discuss!

I don't listen to much talk radio, besides Michael Savage for laughs.

However, since you mentioned pissed-off liberals, I'd recommend Stephanie Miller. Sound effects, fart jokes, and some pretty good ranting regarding conservatives. Low-brow but very enjoyable.

Good topic dynamotv. I listen to quite a bit of talk radio, usually as background noise at work. While I personally go mostly for local Sports Talk I do listen to some talking heads also. While I find Coast to Coast wacky, ridiculous and loony, often the over the top insaneness of the callers turns me off. You want to believe in UFOs? Fine. But most of these folks take it waaaaay too far to the point it just gets ridiculous. And I don't like how the host encourages them.

As for Conservative Talk Shows, I agree that most are horrible...and that the opening to Hugh Hewitt's show is the worst on radio. But I do like Michael Medved a lot (atrocious movie reviews aside) and I actually like Hewitt's show too. The rest (Hannity, Rush, O'Reilly, Ingram, etc.) I just can't stand. I also think that Randi Rhodes is just as bad as they are, if not worse.

Savage is bat-shit crazy and I find him hilarious. How anyone can take him seriously is behind me. A 100 years ago he would have found himself in an asylum.

My favorite shows are Clark Howard and Dave Ramsey. I'm a sucker for consumer advocate/money talk. Mostly because I get a perverse kick out of hearing how stupid 99% of American consumers are. "What?!? A car loan is a bad idea? Putting 0% down on my house is not recommended? Savings accounts at Banks give shitty interest?" Dumb fucks.

Guilty Pleasure - Dennis Miller. Maybe I'm stuck in the 80s but I still like his dry humor and wit.

I enjoy both Stephanie Miller & Randi Rhodes. Obviously, because of the current administration and all the messes it has made, they have plenty to talk about. Their personalities make the shows a lot more interesting than most progressive talk show hosts, as mentioned above.

I'm curious to see how the shows would change if the Dems take the Presidency along with both houses of Congress next year.

The thing I respect about Medved is that he actually allows callers who don't agree with him to call up. Most Conservative hosts are chicken shit about debating. Especially Limbaugh. Haven't heard Dennis Miller's yack fest. Any good?

I listen to Coast to Coast AM (I do a lot of driving late at night) when I can, but it's fallen off since it's prime. Noory is nowhere near the natural carny that Bell was. Still, I check it out when I'm in the car and it's on.

Air America still exists (they declared bankruptcy and were sold earlier in the year), but good luck finding an affiliate. The only reason I know they're still around is because I have satellite radio. I don't listen to it often, mostly because despite my left leaning politics I can't abide most of their personalities. Randi Rhodes is really, really rough to listen to and I find her to have a very abrasive personality, so I don't tune in much.

I can't listen to any conservative radio for more than 10 minutes without completely flipping out.

You know who really sucked at the Talk Radio thing?

Al Franken.

The guy writes some of the best and funniest books on politics but is/was horrible at radio. Just boring.

Well, you gotta be in a mood to listen to Rhandi. Like really pissed off at George Bush. She's really fun when squaring off on TV with a conservative. That's alot of fun.

I'm pissed at Bush all the time, but I just can't get into her. She's constantly talking over callers and arguing over small, irrelevant points.

Who is that guy who had the number one Progressive radio program? Some guy on the Mother Jones radio network? I remember liking the guy alot. He seemed to be pretty middle of the road. Hate it when I forget a name. Help please...

He does it to bait them. He normally gets the craziest person on the air so he comes out looking like the good guy.

Count me in as another Coast to Coast fan.

I've sent them numerous e-mails asking for another John Titor show.

Ed Schultz is pretty good. He really gives off the mid-west vibe, which is a bit unusual to me, but he does seem to be pretty fair in his presentation of the issues.

I'm happy that Phil Hendrie is back. He isn't quite on par with what he used to do, but it's still a great satire of the medium.

The bulk of the national political shows, both from the right and what few are out there for the left, are awful. Savage is okay for a laugh from time to time just because he's so over the top.

There's a show I'll catch on the weekends from time to time called "Handel on the Law" hosted by an attorney named Bill Handel. He has a daily morning show in LA but the weekend one is just law-related and is syndicated all over. His motto for the program is "Marginal legal advice where I tell you you have no case." Very funny show.
Yeah I was just about to mention Hendrie. I haven't heard his new stuff but man did he have a good thing especially when he made fun of Art Bell. I mean if you didn't crack up after what Brigadier Johnson Jameson had to say or Art latest plug from Peenman Enterprises. Well, you've got problems.

Also 103.1 has Jonsey's jukebox and I've been a fan of Metropolis with Jason Bentley over on 89.9.

Glenn Beck and Neal Boortz. Sorry, I don't hear talking points coming from these guys. And you have to admit that Savage isn't reading the faxes either.

So we can acknowlege that many of the Conservative Talk Show hosts get talking points? Because it's kinda obvious if you tune in all day to the various shows.

The notion of talking points faxes to me is a funny one. I highly doubt there is a top level agenda being driven by the media outlets in the form of memos and faxes.

Yet, I will agree that if there are then both national party organizations are guilty of providing them and their respective media outlets are guilty of lockstep.

If you say that AM talk radio gets them and then deny that the so-called mainstream media isn't from the other team that is disingenuous.

I listen to Glenn Beck in the AM, Boortz in the afternoon and Savage for about a half hour at night. I may get a little Limbaugh inbetween commercial breaks for Boortz but I can say that the topics covered from those three typically are not similar and their politics all lean away from the two party system and they are all often critical of the administrations handling of various issues.

The "Art Bell" segments were some of my favorites, second maybe to the ones with Ted Bell from "Ted's of Beverly Hills."

If you Art Bell fans haven't heard Hendrie's act, you should enjoy this:

I'm still not convinced that "Michael Savage" isn't just an elaborate prank. His views are so extreme that he almost comes across like a parody, especially since he's got a degree from Berkley and wrote books on homeopathic medicine under his real name, "Michael Weiner". Fuck, in the 70's he was good friends with Allen Ginsberg.

I don't know. Maybe he has dissasociative identity disorder or suffered a head injury or something, because nobody has that radical a change in philosophy, especially when they're far along into adult hood (he didn't adopt his current stances until he was well into his late forties). Whatever the case, I can't stand him.

Howard Stern is all I can listen to anymore. I used to enjoy Dr. Laura Schlessinger because she's so batfuck insane, but she was dropped from my area.
Medved cracks me up sometimes. Quite a few times I've heard a caller or guest win a debate with him, and he simply shrugs them off with a "Whatever". The guy is so delusional it's hilarious.
I can't listen to any of the political pundits. They're so goddamn self absorbed and boring.

Dan Patrick has a syndicated show now from 9am to 12pm (at least that's when it airs in Orlando and when it streams on his site) for those that miss his ESPN show.

I wasn't always the biggest fan of Ted Bell (And couldn't stand Margret Gray or Bobbi Doley, although that was the point really) but it was sad when they started bleeping out the end of his theme song which admittedly I think made it even more filthy.

I always enjoyed the antics of Bud Dickman and R.C. Collins or for that matter any Hendrie character that just started screaming. For whatever reason Hendrie had this hilarious scream. See Pastor William Renick to understand what I mean.

I just find her frustrating. Shut up, woman! Let the fools talk! It's hard to peg someone's Bush apologia as pathetic and sad if you don't let them prove it to you and your audience first.

The only difference between her and the usual gang of idiots like Hannity and O'Reilly and Savage is that she's right and they're wrong. That's not enough of a difference to get me to listen to hear. The sort of chaotic shoutfest that passes for talking in talk radio just frustrates me.
Coast to Coast is the best, I haven't tuned in a while. I also enjoyed Savage for the crazy shit he used to come up with. I'll have to see if I can get some of this in podcasts and listen to it at work.
I listen to NPR sometimes, mostly 'cause rock radio is so awful around here.

She does the same thing to people who agree with her. Always talking over callers in that shrill voice. I also can't get over how fucking hard she tries to make it seem she's a liberal. She's always talking about "my gay friend" or "my black friend". Fuck, we get it. You accept everyone for who they are. Now shut the fuck up about it and at least attempt to make engaging radio.

She really is the left-wing equivalent of right-wing blowhards.
