Wu Tang first to legally sample Beatles

We knew RZA could be persuasive, but convincing the Harrison Estate and the Beatles to allow Wu-Tang Clan to be the very first group ever to legally sample the Beatles (!!?!) would be an impressive feat for a Supreme Court attorney. Nonetheless, the Clan accomplished this mission somehow (we imagine RZA and GZA bugging the Beatles in their Coffee & Cigarettes voices: "Hey Paul McCartney!" "Hey Ringo Starr!").

The sample comes from the George Harrison-penned "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and is featured on the Wu's "Gently Weeps", from their forthcoming new album, 8 Diagrams. The song was originally thought to be just a partial cover of the Beatles track, albeit one featuring both Harrison's son Dhani and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' John Frusciante playing guitar. Now, it's obviously something more.
I wonder how much money they paid for this. I'm sure RZA's work in Hollywood scoring movies probably helped him have the connections to get this done. Still, I'm interested to hear what it will sound like.

Regardless, The Grey Album will still be better.

Huh. It's a shame that the Wu-Tang have pretty much fallen apart over the last...decade. Still, RZA, GZA, and Raekwon do it for me. Also, I'm kind of a Method Man fan, even though there's absolutely no reason for that anymore.

Give Ghostface some love. He's doing a free show here in about a week, I'm pretty excited.

Argh, my bad. He's not only talented, he's made multiple appearances on 30 Rock.

I'm still a GZA fan, as Liquid Swords gets regular play on my ipod.

I'm most psyched about Frusciante's involvement.

It also could be that they're collaborating with George Harrison's son on the project. I'm sure he pulls some weight.

It's hard to get excited about a sampling of a single song, but I hope this opens the floodgates. More importantly, I hope this album is both great and successful.

Although he has possibly the most thankless role on the show, he never fails to amuse me on The Wire.

Ghostface's "Fishscale" was one of last year's best albums.

I'll be interested to hear this song, and the entire album. I'm hoping it's worth the wait. Also, it's not like they asked to sample "Hey Jude" or something, this isn't a song that pops quickly to mind when one says 'Beatles'. Still, pretty cool.

I love Wu-Tang, but I can't really get excited about someone sampling the Beatles. It might turn out to be great. I will buy the album, but I think sampling artists as well known as the Beatles usually backfires. In sampling, I think it is usually a lesser known track or one that is chopped beyond recognition that usually make the best beats. I mean there are artists like Girl Talk who I like, but even that was more of a novelty. It was an interesting experiment in post-modernism and you could dance to it. I just don't think it holds a candle to the best work of someone like DJ Shadow or Daft Punk uses samples. That said, in RZA I trust.

Same here. It's probably more nostalgia then anything.

It's not like it hasn't been done before. Hell, the Beastie Boys did it all the way back int he 80's with Paul's Boutique. This is just the first legal sampling. It's kind of not a big deal.

Fuck I forgot about that The End sample from The Sounds of Science.

I said I couldn't get excited about it. I didn't say that because I think the Beatles are sacred cows.

Actually, I'd have to disagree. It's not a radio favorite, but it's definitely one of the more popular songs off that album. I'd be more excited if it were something like Blue Jay Way.

I hear it on the radio all the time and it's often considered Harrison's best Beatles track, I think...

well that was a whole bunch of nothing. It's an interpolation, not a sample...link has an mp3.

I still find it amazing that, considering how many famous and classic artists The Beastie Boys sampled on "Paul's Boutique", nobody sued the hell out of them. Or did someone? I think not since that was before some copyright laws went into effect, but damn. I mean, for the love of God, take a look at this: http://paulsboutique.info/songs.php

I am still on a mission that niggas say is impossible, as well. The GZA even gave good financial advice on the Chappelle Show about diversifying bonds. I wonder what ever happened to Inspectah Deck and Masta Killa. I haven't heard from those fellas in a while and would still like to keep in touch.
