So heres my big secret. You should google Bungie + Microsoft + separation this week.
You know that big ol BILLION dollar franchise Bungie has created for Microsoft, to show their appreciate Microsoft is letting Bungie leave. Of course Microsoft gets to keep all rights to the Halo franchise, but as today Bungie no longer part of Microsoft. Ask anyone who works there to search the global address book, they're no longer in there. Microsoft was supposed to release the press release today but if they wait till the 10/6 the impact wont effect the quarterly results. However today is the actual official date and the day the NDAs expire, however you still didn't hear this from me."

"Apparently MS just wants Bungie to make Halo for the rest of their natural days, and Bungie doesn't like how MS is constantly trying to "handle" everything they do; the way they market their games, the way they interact with their fans (basically the fact that they do appreciate their fans), and how stingie they are with the profits (comparable to the rest of the industry). So as of today they are their own independent entity. They'll probably make Halo 4 for Microsoft, however hey are also free to create new intellectual properties for whatever system they want. (Even though they prefer the xbox platform)"

This is about the least believable rumor I've ever heard. However, it refuses to go away. If true (and I'm extremely skeptical)...wow. This goes beyond big.
This ranks up there with Halo for the DS. I'll believe it when there's an official press release.
If only this could somehow result in Treyarch doing Halo 4.
Omg Halo On Teh Ps3!!!1
They can finally get back to all those other viable franchises they've created... like... uh... Myth?
Oni sequel- PS3 exclusive!
Oh god, Oni. That game was SHIT.
Have you forgotten about Marathon? What about ONI?!?

But seriously, it makes a ton of sense that Bungie would want to leave MS. I'm not sure how much of a benefit they're seeing from being a 2nd party developer.

They did used to be primarily a Mac company, after all.

(fuck! too slow)
I've many fond memories of Marathon, but after going back and playing on a friend's 360 after he downloaded it, I realize that most of my love for the game came from it being the only FPS available to me.
I'm waiting to see an official press release before I make an education response, but I hope they continue to make Halo and other games for the Xbox platform.

The project is dead and over but, there's your proof it was once being made.

I've never cursed as much while playing a game as I did when I forced myself to play through that back in the day.

That's bullshit proof.

I'll add that people are saying this is golden eye DS with halo skins.

I only trust IGN as far as I can throw them in game rumor department. It's more likely that they coaxed this whole thing to get more web hits.
I really doubt this is going to happen. The only way I could see it is if bungie payed back all the money microsoft spent to buy them plus a sizable amount, and even then they would have to take a huge MS dick in the ass before being aloud to painfully go on there way.
Looks like it's official now.
The lack of denial was getting awfully weird.
I'm actually really, genuinely surprised. I'm also not sure if this really means much. Sure, their next game will probably go cross-platform, but it's not like we're going to see Halo on the Wii any time soon.

If anything, I figured they would have let Rare go.
You've got to wonder to what extent MS was keeping Bungie from really pushing Halo forward. If MS was holding the development of the series to a certain point, forcing Bungie to make a game that wasn't too far off from the last so that sales and basic reception would be assured (i.e., "make Halo 2 with better graphics") I can see the studio really starting to chafe.
Yeah, either that or Microsoft was refusing to greenlight any idea that wasn't Halo 4.

I'm pretty apathetic toward this news. I think the Halo campaign and multiplayer engines are so well-oiled at this point that you could easily pass off the development duties to a dozen different studios without any noticeable dip in quality. (Because it's not like Bungie have been master storytellers or particularly innovative lately.) Hell, with Bungie's engine at their disposal, Free Radical could probably crank out a decent Halo game every holiday season.

My only fear is that Rare will take the reins. Microsoft is still desperate for a way to justify Rare's purchase, and Perfect Dark Zero gave my Xbox herpes.
All kidding aside, it'll be nice to see them get away from Halo and broaden their scope. They've obviously got chops.

Now if they can just put away the ridiculous bloom lighting effects...

I've always wanted to know if Master Chief could beat up Fulgore. Now there's a chance I'll find out!

ULTRA C-C-C-C-C-COMBO

*BLOOM EXPLOSION*lol

The Penny Arcade guy wants Irrational Games or Bioware to take over the franchise. That's fucking madness. Why saddle two of the most innovative developers out there with such a thankless, restrictive job? That's like forcing Darren Aronofsky to make a Chronicles of Narnia movie.
Yeah, no shit. All a Halo game needs is to pretty much be the same as the other Halo games, with some new weapons and new levels and whatnot. That's a sad commentary on the industry itself, but there you go.
Now who in the hell is going to sponsor their volleyball tournaments?
So what did Halo 3 actually do that's unique to the gaming industry? Same thing goes for the other games of the series.

Here's to more Halo sameness...

Not a whole lot, ultimately. But it did bring a genuinely good multiplayer first person shooter to consoles, which had been in a serious dry spell for the like since Goldeneye. In the big scheme of things, compared to PC shooters, Halo is fairly average. But for what it is, it's a lot of fun, and served its purpose well.

But why didn't PC ports work on consoles? Half-Life never got much love on consoles, nor did anything Unreal or Quake. The only other real notable FPS console entry I can think of is the Timesplitters series.

They didn't play well on consoles because of control issues, hardware limitations, or lack of online support. Until Xbox Live came along, playing console games online was a novelty.

Halo succeeded for the same reason Goldeneye did: 4-player multiplayer. Hard-to-find adapters aside, none of the other consoles had more than two ports for controllers, and two player dethmatch isn't that much fun.

The Dreamcast did have 4 controller ports and both Unreal Tournament and Quake III for it. Both were pretty well reviewed (and I played some of both). I can't remember if they had 4 player split-screen though. Of course it was still the Dreamcast so no one really cared.
For the record, playing an FPS on the PS2 fucking blew. The same could probably be said about the PS3.
I'd say that Halo is a lot more pick-up-and-play friendly than Half-Life 1 or 2, which are primarily single player experiences. Plus, Microsoft's marketing after the first game proved a success can't be denied as a force in making the other two such hits.

Halo was the first FPS in a long time that was both halfway-decent AND built from the ground up with both consoles and multiplayer in mind. I'd say the very fact that it WASN'T a PC port is a big part of its initial appeal, since ports, in general, have been spotty.

Remember Brute Force?
I vaguely remember that it sucked, yes.
Have to admit that i'm surprised (just once i'd like a prediction to come through). How tense were relations for them not to work this out?
And Bungie breathes a sigh of relief: "Thank Christ we don't have to keep making Halo games until we're dead."
Somewhere in the southwest Retro Studios is collectively muttering "lucky sumbitches..."
You know, this is a little more interesting in light of Activision buying Bizarre Creations a few weeks ago from Microsoft.
Bungie started work on Halo originally in 1998, so that makes 9 years of being surrounded by the universe. Considering that, I don't blame them for wanting to make other stuff.
