If it's Halloween, it must be...

Thread Starter
FUCK YOU.

I have only seen SAW 2. According to my sister, who is a big fan of the series, 2 is the best of the bunch. SAW 2 is total shit. Is the studio really making so much money with these that they need to fart one out annually? It seems to me that the series is the current Madden of the film industry.
Since the SAW movies cost nothing to make, it pretty much is econmically viable for the studios to keep doing it. What we have here is this generations Friday the 13th series where upteenth sequels will be made and later gone over in 20 years by a film reviewer of a major movie website in an interesting and somewhat hilarious series.
The first one is the best one. They are all ass, but the first one keeps the story moving quickly (and ludicrously) enough so it's slightly less painful than the other 2.
Yeah, from what I've read the Saw movies generally cost something like $10M to make. The first weekend they typically bring in about $30M. There's definitely a fair chunk of change being made here.
Judging from Saw IV's trailer, they certainly aren't spending the big bucks on advertising, either.

Go away.

I keep getting updates from these guys, new stills and posters and all sorts of goodies, but I've stopped reported on it because there's only so many times I can rip on this horrible, horrible series.

The most profitable horror series, ever.

(sigh...)
I hate the films, but I love the marketing and the economic feasibility of it. There's something refreshing about these films after reading about $200 million blockbusters only to see "Saw" continually grab another $70 million each year at Halloween and prove far more profitable.

I haven't seen the third, but I think the second one is far more absurd than the first film and therefore better, but they are both still laughable.
The only thing I admire about the Saw films is that they have a bit of the 80s franchise vibe going to them. And by this I mean, from 1980 - 1989, there was a new Friday the 13th almost every year (except for '84 and '87). I bet back then everyone wanted Jason to go away but he kept conming back. And we love those films now (well, most of them). If Saw can make it to 2013 with the 8th or 9th installment, I'll be impressed.

But, they'll still be fucking atrocious.
I'm waiting for this series to go Direct to Video/DVD, as the Hellraiser films did.

My advice, if you do accidently watch any Saw sequel is to immediately get to a video or DVD and mainline some Fulci or Argento. It'll make the pain go away.
alex, just foward the stuff to me. i'll report on it! as for the rest of you, actually watching a movie really helps the strength of your opinions.
i mean, shit, they're smart enough to at least bring the film out during october when it can make some money. im tired of all the studios releasing their horror films in april or august.

you guys are mean!

What the hell kind of world is it where we can get four Saw movies but we couldn't get a Buckaroo Banzai sequel?

A cold, cold world.

at least there are new south parks starting tonight and new sarah silverman.
It's just Saw, let it be.

Have you seen the other tagline? "It's a trap." Which always reminds me of the Robot Chicken Admiral Ackbar joke.
Let's see if Saw IV can get less then Fuck you! out of 10.

Fuck You! out of 10 isn't even the most insulting rating I've ever seen. For the last Jet album, instead of a review, Pitchfork simply posted a video of a monkey pissing into his own mouth.

Top that Devin!

There's a spoiler in her, if anyone cares, before you read on. I didn't think the 1st one was THAT bad, because it was kind of a new Schtick. But 2 & 3 were totally fucking awful. And now that John's dead, what's the fucking point? I just don't see what people find so damned interesting about these films. Halloween and Elm Street and Friday the 13th at least had charismatic villains to hold your interest. And sometimes they tried to entertain w/ the increasingly over the top kills. But now that Jigsaw's dead, and he played a significantly smaller & smaller role in 2 & 3 as it is, and the kills - such as they were - in 3 were almost an afterthought (it felt like it to me, anyway; we got very little background & buildup on the victims, which was another thing that set the 1st Saw apart from the inferior sequels), what do they have going for them? I just don't see it.

Huh? Jigsaw's a nothing player in the first Saw. He gets off the bathroom floor and that's that. His role is infinitely larger in the sequels, where he actually gets entire scenes.

And, oh yeah, I like all three Saw films. Gasp, shock, horror.

I loved the way Jason could just roll into a room with a wry smile, and a twinkle in his eye. Women wanted him, men wanted to be in him. He didn't need to say a word, but boy could he chat up a storm if the mood took him.

I'm not a big fan of the Saw franchise, but I'm not on the hater band wagon either. I dig death-traps so they've all managed to keep me mildly entertained one way or the other with causing me to utilize the FF button, something the majority of horror releases fail to accomplish. You won't ever find me purchasing a box set, but as I've seen them all, I'll probably see Saw 4 as well.

True, he gets more screen time, but he's not the architect of the shenanigans the way he used to be, w/ his protege taking over much of the work for him, especially in 3, where he's pretty much bedridden.

Point taken, but I note you didn't call me out on Michael Meyers. You don't necessarily have to talk to be menacing in a horror (particularly a slasher) film. The hulking, silent, hockey mask wearing savage that Jason is has become a sort of iconic figure in the genre. And he's got sable hellholes for eyes. Jigsaw can't top that.
What do you think? Will Saw IV be another big hit? I think the possibility is quite there. Most people I know loved no. III and think it's the best of the series, and reactions for the new premise (with Jigsaw being dead and that stuff) were pretty positive.

Well, I think Nick's take of the original was pretty damn spot-on.

No doubt all the guys you mentioned have more presence and will be far longer lasting icons than jigsaw ever will be.

Three of the four are unstopable personifications of evil, the other one puts a bear trap on your head after he dresses up like a pig and drugs you unconscious because it's not fair he has cancer. And if you've seen the muppet movie you've seen puppets on bikes at their scariest.

I love that about Saw III, though. It's Amanda's story. The entire film is about him trying to shape her up and get her to realize that murder is wrong. I'm particularly taken by the fact she calls him on the fact he tortures and kills people, that it's all a lie. She tears down his entire philosophy in the last ten minutes of the movie.
All of them are the best one because they all feature Shawnee Smith. Seriously, though - Shawnee Smith has a franchise. It's utter shit, but how can you be mad? Just don't watch it and be happy that it exists. That's the road I'm taking. I watched 1 and 2 and checked right on out. But, the Earth is a strange and beautiful place, full of wonderments and excitements and tobinbellments. This is just another example of how fucked up and great and wrong it is all at once.

I'd agree with that if I weren't getting emails every single day from the people marketing this thing, talking about "HOW F*CKED UP!" this clip or that poster is. It's not! It's really not.
Can you blame them, Alex? You're writing for a major horror website and they're promoting the biggest horror film of the year, in all probability.
Either way, have these guys ever read any article written by Alex about their precious franchise? I don“t know how they could possibly expect any redeeming comment. Sending PR-stuff is like leading sheeps to the slaughterhouse in that case. Which would make for a better movie by the way.
They just sent me the final trailer 10 minutes ago.

Kevin, check your email...

Does it show anything new?

I'm of the mind that people who check our promotional material -- especially with a franchise as big as Saw -- have already made up their minds before clicking the link, so Alex's comments don't have much of an effect either way.

Of course they love the new premise; because hopefully it will finally end the franchise!

No, they have 5 & 6 coming out in the next 2 years.

Oh, wow, they've already slated 5 & 6!?!? I can definitely see the Hellraiser-like slide to STV then as a few others have already mentioned.

Just checked it out now... very, very little. It's more of a tv spot than anything. 37 seconds. Shows Jigsaw dead on a slab with him doing a voiceover about how it's not over.

Bah, I'll get it up on the site.

Except that these films cost $10 million and make around $80 million.

It's when Saw 5: Jigsaw in Space comes out that it will kill the franchise.
hehe
Oh, it'd roll in the dough. Can't you already see the tagline? "Houston... I want to play a game."
Did Shawnee's character get killed off in the last one? I was planning on not seeing this one. But if she's gone, I plan on not seeing it twice.
I'd see Saw: In Space.

"In space nobody wants to play a game."
I'd see "Saw: In Da Trash"

"Yo' ass is gettin' recycled."

Tobin Bell should do audio books.
