Conan Xbox 360

I am really looking forward to this. Seems like a cross between Ninja Gaiden and God of War. The animation looks really awesome. The art direction is influenced by Frazetta, and Ron Pearlman is doing the voice of Conan. I just hope it doesn't end up being the usual licensed crap. I'm not very familiar with Nihilistic Software.

I thought this would be about an 360 that looks like Conan O'Brien.

Dang.

Played it a couple of weeks ago in Vegas. It plays like a cross between NG and GOW. But there's more tits.

This seemed to come in under the radar without much hype, didn't it?

For what's it's worth, Eurogamer thought it was cheesy fun.

Did you read the by line? It's not just Eurogamer, it's good ol' Dan Whitehead.

Conan by THQ is not based on Marvel's Comics or Dark Horses Conan, or John Milius Conan The Barbarian. THQ's Conan is adapted from the classic pulp stories of his creator Robert E Howard. I don't understand why Conan is considered cheesy. Conan The Cimmerian is one of the earliest figures in the sword and sorcery genre that was created by an American writer.

Demo up on XBL today.

Pretty underwhelming demo. Looks and plays very last-gen.

Ugly game. I'll give it a rent.

I have to wonder if that was finished animation in the cut scene in the demo, because it sure looked spotty.

It's a not very thinly-veiled God of War clone, but it was fun while it lasted.

Yeah, I was pretty unimpressed by the demo. Valor pleases Crom, but boring gameplay and a distant, unmovable camera does not.

Something tells me The Mark of Kri was the closest we'll ever get to a great Conan game.

yeah the camera is way too far away for all the blood and gore they want to depict.

Seriously. I have a 50" TV; I shouldn't have to squint at it and wonder if I just chopped off a head or an arm.

But it's just the right distance away for the way they want to depict it (i.e. as cheaply as possible).

I just started playing through this yesterday and I'm actually really enjoying it. I'm a huge God of War fan and this is a nice enough imitation of it so far. I'm actually enjoying it much more than I did Assassin's Creed (which was so boring that I just couldn't keep playing).

I played the PS3 demo and was kind of bored by it. Does it get better as you get further along in the game?

I'm thinking maybe you should actually try some nachos, because clearly you're malnourished or something.

Conan sucked IMO. Although Assassin's wasn't as good as the hype would have you believe and before Jacob gets his panties in a twist, I'm almost done with the game (2 assassinations left), love the story and play mechanics, but the game felt a bit empty. However, I cannot wait for the sequel. The only thing I have to give it up for Assassins is the fact that I played it so much this weekend to just try to beat it, that when I tried to play some COD, I was trying to scale walls and for a split second couldn't figure out why it wasn't working.

I'll admit that Conan isn't a top tier title in any sense of the word. What it is though is a fun enough action game with enjoyable gore and a good fighting system.

It's pretty cool the way you can pick up dropped 2 handed weapons or switch to dual wield. You can also carry a shield and sword if you want. Each set of weapons has a different set of combos that you can unlock for them. In addition to the standard X,X,Y or X,X,X,X combos or whatever they've also got special parry movies where is you press block at just the right time you can kill the small enemies in quite entertaining ways.

Plus, to make the combo system more interesting you can get experience with a particular combo and eventually master it. When you master it you'll get red runes which you can spend to learn new moves (you also get red runes from opening chests and killing enemies ... much like God of War).

Also like God of War, they've got a sort of Rage of the Titans mode. Basically every time you kill a person it starts filling up a special meter, the more people you kill and the better ways you kill them the more it fills up. It'll slowly drain away if you're not attacking anyone and getting hit will take larger chunks away. Still, it's fun when you get into rooms and destroy massive amounts of enemies and unleash this brutality on them.

Plus, there are a number of moves that let you decapitate enemies, sever them in half (vertically or horizontally), cut their arms off (they even have a stat in your scores for each level keeping track of the limbs you've removed), etc.

The two boss battles I've done so far have been pretty enjoyable too. And while I don't find the story particularly engrossing (unlike the GoW series) I have enjoyed the several hours I've played so far. The controls are pretty tight and the variety has been pretty good.
