The OFFICIAL Alamo Drafthouse Thread

Almost universally accepted as THE cinema in which film must be seen in Austin, the Alamo obviously deserves its own thread. It seems like every time that Jeremy or I come crawling back to the Midwest forum to solicite Austin-area Chewers for film gatherings, it's always the Alamo that is proposed.

In any case, this weekend (I know, short notice) is open season for me and I'd love to get something rolling.

UT Football @ 2:30 at Alamo South and Village...it's the Red River Rivalry, people.

Also, if you haven't seen Superbad, yet (I haven't), South has it @ 7:40 pm and 10:30 pm on Saturday and 1:45, 4:35, 7:40 and 10:30 pm on Sunday. There's also 3:10 to Yuma, which is playing at South (Saturday/Sunday - 12:30, 3:30 ,7:05 and 9:50pm).

Alamo South is, by far, my favorite, btw...the proximity to the excellent Flipnotics Coffeespace is a major bonus.

In any case, what say ye?
Awesome thread idea! My wife and I just got tickets ($5 each, but it goes towards your food/beverage tab) to the UT game showing at Alamo South. Hope to see ya there!
Before the Drafthouse opened in Houston I would make excuses to visit friends in Austin and saying "and hey, while I'm there maybe we can go see a movie..."

I'd be up for a meet up for the next big release at an Austin Drafthouse (hell even a Houston one) for sure though.

I will most definitely be present on Saturday for the UT game, so that's lookin' like a winner.

As for next time, it should be no problem so long as we keep this thread alive. I will do my absolute best to update as much as possible.

Like I said, if we can keep this thread strong and actually get some Texan Chewers involved, we might be able to get something strong enough to warrant a plane ticket.

Although, to be entirely fair to the city of Austin...you don't really need much of a reason.
We def. need to set up a time for this to happen. Let me know a few weeks ahead of time so I can make arrangements & I'll be more than happy to drive in for it. We'll make an evening out of it...and a trip to the bars afterwards shouldn't be out of the question.

How about the UT game in November as a nice future date that's stable?

It's a Friday, though...the 23rd. It's advance enough that it shouldn't be too terribly difficult to arrange something. In any case, sound off people!

Oh, btw...if you're driving a ways, lemme know if you need a place to stay. So long as I get advance notice, I can usually organize a fairly sweet deal on a hotel room. Benefits of working in the industry and all.

ETA - Also, it's the A&M game. There are, officially, no excuses for any true Texan, at this point.
Fuckin' Aggies...I live in College Station & I'm so tired of the football craze. It'll be nice to watch them get their asses kicked...so I'm in!

I can ask off for work on that day no problem. As long as we make a day out of it I can justify the trip--plus, if that's the A&M game then I DEFINETLY want to hit 6th street that evening. If there's one thing I love about Austin, it's the wealth of beautiful women to be found pretty much everywhere you look. Plus, I've never been able to really enjoy 6th Street, and this being my last semester of college, I need to remedy that!

(Sorry if that last paragraph was particularly hormone-driven. I'm back in the single life again and have moved from irreconcible depression to "OK, who's next?" It's a new experience for me.)

A large chunk of my family lives in CS, so I know exactly what you mean. I took my mother to her first Kyle Field A&M game a couple years back just to show her how insane they can get. It's annoying for people that like to sit down some of the time because those bastards NEVER sit.

Oh, to Greg Clark and anybody else that might need it, especially after an evening waltzing along 6th Street, I've looked into potential lodging and I can secure two rooms at the Homewood Suites on Ben White, which is about 15 mins from the airport. I would've gone for one of the downtown hotels, but it's Black Friday, and they're pretty booked.

Anyway, both rooms are non-smoking Kings with pull-out double beds in the couches. I'll be in one of the rooms...and I really don't mind if somebody wants to crash on the couch. The other room is up for grabs if anybody wants it...it can also handle up to two people if you pull out the couch. Also, one cool thing about the Homewood is that you get a pretty substantial breakfast free of charge in the morning, so that'll nix that expense right there.

Sound off if you need one and I'll fill you in on the rest of the details!
I'd love to grab the other room. Do I book it through the website Jared, or do I work out a payment with you? I can't book/pay right now--I'm currently penniless (I did just start two jobs this week, though, so funds are forthcoming). Let me know!

Oh, and the Aggies never sit during games because "they want to show that they are all willing to play should the team need a 12th Man." It's more traditional bullshit in a town drowning in it (did you know that it is against city ordinance in College Station to have a burnt-orange color roof? That's how anti-UT this town is. We're the only Home Depot without an orange roof, and our Whataburgers have maroon stripes. Fucking UGH. )
Thread Starter
Lots of options for payment.

A) You can leave it as is...and just pay me back in November. (The room rate for these spectacular rooms is a grand total of $39, btw.)

B) You can give me payment info, and I'll arrange for that to be set for the second room's account before we check in.

C) You can provide alternate payment when you check in.

D) You buy my drinks on 6th and we call it square.

I like all of these options, but guess which one I'm partial to...

ETA - I noticed the Whataburgers...but even Home Depot bowed to that b/s? UGH, indeed.

::: pout :::

I thought I might even venture to fly out, but as the lone crazy, stand-all-though-football-games-for-seven-years Aggie.....
OK, you two are going to have to fill me in more on Aggie culture. My wife and I are UT fans, although we just moved from Wisconsin about a year ago. Outside of all the damn chants, what the hell does "Gig 'em" mean? I will admit they're a boisterous lot...

As far as the 11/23 game goes, I'd like to say we're tentatively in. That's my wife's birthday weekend and I haven't cooked up the plans yet for that one. Not to say it's out of the question, since last year we watched the UT-A&M game on 4th street and then got loaded at The Ginger Man (a good 100 or so beers on tap!). It ended up with us going with a couple guys we just met (they were flirting with Kim and then later me) to Oil Can Harry's. Yeah, the other gentleman's club. Fortunately, neither one of them were Aggie fans so I wasn't "Gigged", or at least I don't think I was.

Ah, my poor man, you have gone to the dark side. Or the burnt orange side, however you want to look at it.

For a general overview of Aggie traditions see:
http://aggietraditions.tamu.edu/

"Gig 'em" is like saying "Hook 'em horns." Spearing frogs is called gigging, and the idea is that 'gig 'em' means essentially 'spear 'em.' Some people also have said that it might reference the 'gig line' and being called out and punished for failing inspection.

And the chants (properly called 'yells') are just our version of cheers.
I live in Austin and I think UT people are the same as A&M people. My father and brother went to A&M and my fiance went to UT so I am kind of stuck in the middle, but I usually root against UT.

I was mad that I had to watch The Titans play instead of Houston, I think it's weird that they would show a game with someone who used to play for UT instead of a team from Texas. Oh, and a lot of people in this town are, "I only watch College Football." people.

Okay the rant is over. I am up for any kind of meeting of the minds. I have seen Superbad, but I would be willing to see it again or The Kingdom for that matter. Darjeeling Limited opens next week at the Alamo so I will definately be seeing that.
I hate you all for going to the Drafthouse. Fuckers. One of the things I miss most about Austin. Also, the Paramount's Summer series of movies.

Not sue if they did it at the other Alamo's but at the one I lived by in Lakecreek they had stripper poles up for Sin City.

Ok kids, so we're set for both UT games, then?

I know I'll see Jeremy tomorrow, which is always a fun time. But what about November? Greg Clark needs a place to stay...also fine...I've got that covered. There's still a couch with a pull-out if some other Chewer wants to work out something with him, or whatever...I'd be more than happy to allow one of my fellow Male Chewers (gender inserted so the Ladyfriend won't 'splod me) to crash on the one in my room.

Darjeeling Limited is something I noticed on the Alamo schedule. I'd be more than willing. Anybody else?
As far as I'm concerned the UT game weekend is a lock for me.
It's difficult for me to break away for a trip to Austin, but I will agree that the Alamo Drafthouse is greatness. With any luck I'll be at the Ritz come BNAT time!

Yesterday was a blast...UT Football is a pretty neat experience at the Alamo. It was nice seeing Jeremy again, I just wish that UT had won.

Anyway, I'm locked in for the A&M game on the 23rd of November. I still have two rooms available at another location if any out-of-towners need a place to stay. The two left are at a different discounted rate from the one I was able to secure for Greg Clark, and yes...they're higher. (About $79) Both rooms are doubles, so if any of you can stand somebody else for a night, I would recommend shacking up and splitting the difference. The rooms are at the very conveniently located Doubletree Club, which is right off the highway.

PM me or let me know here if you're interested. I can hold these for a while before it's point-of-no-return, so don't worry too much about availability.

Darjeeling Limited opens next week, and Alamo South has a plethora of showtimes for it.
I'd love to come for the 23rd, but between having family in town and Rock Band it doesn't look like a good date. Plus moving is going to take a toll on drinking expenses while in Austin.

Looking into December, not sure off the top of my head, but won't Sweeney Todd be out early December? I bet the Drafthouse has some kind of insane show planned for it (ala Jaws in Lake Travis, Texas Chainsaw in the woods)

I definitely remember seeing stuff up for Sweeney Todd, so I'm guessing you're right on the money.

We'll know, for sure, within the next month...I think they update their calender of events every other month.

Ok back to the A&M game...are there any suggestions for post-Alamo activities? Obviously, 6th is an excellent choice, but the game is gonna let out somewhere around 5ish or so, I believe, which is kind of early.

So, any nominations?
I have no clue, really. It's been a few years since I've been to Austin, so my memory of what all there is to do for fun is hazy. As long as the evening includes alchohol and the wooing of beautiful women, I'll leave the rest up to more organized thinkers.

I was thinking Chuy's...? It's right down from Alamo South on Barton Springs. Amazing Tex-Mex, wacky atmosphere (think Elvis)...

Eh?

ETA - Also, there's Mangia Pizza...which I've been told to try by many informed Austinites. They claim to serve Chicago-style pizza with a southwest twist. In any case, I remember them from Man of the House...and anything that Tommy Lee Jones eats is a-ok in my book.
Chuy's I am sure will be a hot, hot place for women after the game. Hell, even the one in Houston will be packed full afterwards.
What kind of food are yall looking for? Chuy's is good. Local chain. Get the Elvis plate and some Texas/Mexican Martini's (I can't remember what they call it at Chuy's). Of course you can always get food at the Drafthouse.

Hut's is pretty great hamburgers. Always a line but worth it.

Stubb's BBQ is always hopping on the weekends, plus you might see who is playing there. County Line is supposed to have good ribs, bu it is away from downtown (I believe that is where Nick and co. went when they were there for the Hellboy premiere). Rudy's are nice places for breakfast tacos or cheap BBQ.

Kirby Lane is a great breakfast all day place plus they have regular food which is pretty good. Also for diner style food try Magnolia Cafe out by the lake.

Freebirds at Hancock center has great burritos.
Waterloo Icehouse is good for bar food by the way.

The other place I remember is Threadgill's which also was in Man of the House.

Random Man of the House trivia, Quentin Tarantino was there the days they filmed Jones assaulting the Arkanasas mascot. Also the first movie to ever film at UT's football stadium. And yeah, your fellow Chewer here worked on that one.

Let me know if I can help with anything else. I lived there for 3 years and my production coordinator lives there now.
If I ever move from Texas (I wanna move to Seattle or the UK), the Alamo will be the only place I actually miss.

"Chuy's I am sure will be a hot, hot place for women after the game. Hell, even the one in Houston will be packed full afterwards."

Don't get me started on Chuy's...they closed the one on the West side and moved it to N of the Woodlands* because "the Westside one didn't get enough business."

It was constantly crowded and you had to wait for seats. How is that not enough business?

It also had the freakin' FISH that was their logo.

*For those who don't know the area, the distance between Westheimer's west side and the Woodlands is literally further across than some states.
I would choose Conan's Pizza over Mangia's. If you are craving some ice cream here you need to go to Amy's ice cream and get their Mexican Vanilla, it's the best you will ever have. I don't know when but I am seeing Darjeeling Limited sometime this weekend, I need to talk to my fiance to see when she wants to goas she has to work this weekend, so no late shows.
Don't forget Thundercloud's on Sunday for the post drinking hangover meatball sandwich with onions.

It kills me there is this empty theater down the street from where we live in the burbs of New Orleans, and every time we pass it we always say how great it would be for someone to buy it and to turn it into an Alamo or any other form of Brew&View. I even checked what it would take to get an Alamo franchise; sadly I don't have the qualifications they are looking for.
You could always try & turn it into a Studio Movie Grill, which is the same concept as the Drafthouse but minus the indie edge the Alamo is known for.

Chuy's or Mangia Pizza sounds fine by me.

Wow, I didn't even know there was one on the West end of Westheimer. I live at 6 and I-10, and absolutely was ignorant that there was one there. I always go to the one on Westheimer and Montrose so that after you can sneak into Katz' for the cheesecake shake of doom.

And Woodlands? What in the hell? Why are these good "city" chains, which still feel and run fairly mom and pop style moving out that way. Katz' opened a place out there as well. But we can't get any of them in the Bear Creek/Katy/Sugarland area? Give me a break.

Face it, your area is turning into the next Gunspoint... I mean Greenspoint.

Hahahah... I got that.

And, in Austin, Guero's Taco Bar is awesome.

Not really. I mean Bear Creek has it's pockets, but for the most part the west side is really safe outside of those skate boarding misfits! Long, long, long way to go to become Gunspoint or Scott & 610.

And so this doesn't become off topic...Thundercloud Sammiches are incredible. And right down the street from the one in north Austin is a small Greek/Turkish grocery store with a deli inside. Those gyros are great.

I've heard mixed things about that. The guy that owns Antone's works there, right?

ETA - Btw, not to burden everyone's creative thinking processes, but this IS Alamo South we're talking about. North Austin is a wonderful place and all, but let's try to keep it within a reasonable distance from the Alamo.

Also, let's take a head count...so far, it's me, ?Jeremy?, Greg Clark, ?Rene?, ?BillyG? that could actually make it...? Anybody else? Remember out-of-towners (I'm one of you, btw!) that there are still two open rooms at a reasonably discounted rate available, but don't let me destroy your excuses ahead of time. What's really cool is I think we might be able to get the hotel at which Greg and I are staying to take us to the other hotel at which I've secured rooms and pick anybody that might be there up...

We've still got over a month, people, and this is either gonna make or break the reboot of Texas Chewer solidarity. Well, maybe not something that dramatic, but I think we can all agree that it sure would be nice to really get something special going. So, give this is a shot, kiddos!

Rene, any updates on when you might be able to make it out for Darjeeling?

It's entirely possible that the ladyfriend and I could come down tomorrow late afternoon/early evening-ish.

There are a shitload of showtimes at Alamo South.
I know for sure that I will be there on Saturday. I am pretty sure it will be the 7:00 PM show though. Let me just ask my fiance and I will let you know.

Edit: Just talked to her. I just bought my tickets for 7:00 PM tomorrow. Send me an e-mail if you want to meet up, or PM me.

It does except for this...

And your favorite photo of you from a past Halloween Celebration or Costumed affair. These should be JPG in format - and be attached as such.

Hmm I have not dressed up since I was about 12. And Halloween parties I go to I am always the boring "I'm a serial killer/rapist. I look normal and non-threatening" person because I hate dressing up. Guess that means my "application' would get bounced.

You could always take a picture solely for the purpose of the application. Dress up in something insane just for the picture and then call it a day.

So, Nordling...does this mean you'll be gracing Austin with your presence?
It's like pulling teeth to get me to Austin. I love the city very much, more so than the one I'm living in now (and I was born here), but we only have the one family car and too many responsibilities. I don't think I'll make it to the Ritz until BNAT, if I'm picked.

But you better go and post about it! Looks like you'll be able to buy tickets starting tomorrow!

So AICN reports there will be a special The Wizard reunion the day before BNAT. I'm so there if my BNAT application gets accepted.

I wonder if people are going to show up with their power gloves to that screening?
