The OFFICIAL Alamo Drafthouse Thread

Almost universally accepted as THE cinema in which film must be seen in Austin, the Alamo obviously deserves its own thread. It seems like every time that Jeremy or I come crawling back to the Midwest forum to solicite Austin-area Chewers for film gatherings, it's always the Alamo that is proposed.

In any case, this weekend (I know, short notice) is open season for me and I'd love to get something rolling.

UT Football @ 2:30 at Alamo South and Village...it's the Red River Rivalry, people.

Also, if you haven't seen Superbad, yet (I haven't), South has it @ 7:40 pm and 10:30 pm on Saturday and 1:45, 4:35, 7:40 and 10:30 pm on Sunday. There's also 3:10 to Yuma, which is playing at South (Saturday/Sunday - 12:30, 3:30 ,7:05 and 9:50pm).

Alamo South is, by far, my favorite, btw...the proximity to the excellent Flipnotics Coffeespace is a major bonus.

In any case, what say ye?

I will most definitely be present on Saturday for the UT game, so that's lookin' like a winner.

As for next time, it should be no problem so long as we keep this thread alive. I will do my absolute best to update as much as possible.

Like I said, if we can keep this thread strong and actually get some Texan Chewers involved, we might be able to get something strong enough to warrant a plane ticket.

Although, to be entirely fair to the city of Austin...you don't really need much of a reason.

How about the UT game in November as a nice future date that's stable?

It's a Friday, though...the 23rd. It's advance enough that it shouldn't be too terribly difficult to arrange something. In any case, sound off people!

Oh, btw...if you're driving a ways, lemme know if you need a place to stay. So long as I get advance notice, I can usually organize a fairly sweet deal on a hotel room. Benefits of working in the industry and all.

ETA - Also, it's the A&M game. There are, officially, no excuses for any true Texan, at this point.

A large chunk of my family lives in CS, so I know exactly what you mean. I took my mother to her first Kyle Field A&M game a couple years back just to show her how insane they can get. It's annoying for people that like to sit down some of the time because those bastards NEVER sit.

Oh, to Greg Clark and anybody else that might need it, especially after an evening waltzing along 6th Street, I've looked into potential lodging and I can secure two rooms at the Homewood Suites on Ben White, which is about 15 mins from the airport. I would've gone for one of the downtown hotels, but it's Black Friday, and they're pretty booked.

Anyway, both rooms are non-smoking Kings with pull-out double beds in the couches. I'll be in one of the rooms...and I really don't mind if somebody wants to crash on the couch. The other room is up for grabs if anybody wants it...it can also handle up to two people if you pull out the couch. Also, one cool thing about the Homewood is that you get a pretty substantial breakfast free of charge in the morning, so that'll nix that expense right there.

Sound off if you need one and I'll fill you in on the rest of the details!

Lots of options for payment.

A) You can leave it as is...and just pay me back in November. (The room rate for these spectacular rooms is a grand total of $39, btw.)

B) You can give me payment info, and I'll arrange for that to be set for the second room's account before we check in.

C) You can provide alternate payment when you check in.

D) You buy my drinks on 6th and we call it square.

I like all of these options, but guess which one I'm partial to...

ETA - I noticed the Whataburgers...but even Home Depot bowed to that b/s? UGH, indeed.

I know I'll see Jeremy tomorrow, which is always a fun time. But what about November? Greg Clark needs a place to stay...also fine...I've got that covered. There's still a couch with a pull-out if some other Chewer wants to work out something with him, or whatever...I'd be more than happy to allow one of my fellow Male Chewers (gender inserted so the Ladyfriend won't 'splod me) to crash on the one in my room.

Darjeeling Limited is something I noticed on the Alamo schedule. I'd be more than willing. Anybody else?

Yesterday was a blast...UT Football is a pretty neat experience at the Alamo. It was nice seeing Jeremy again, I just wish that UT had won.

Anyway, I'm locked in for the A&M game on the 23rd of November. I still have two rooms available at another location if any out-of-towners need a place to stay. The two left are at a different discounted rate from the one I was able to secure for Greg Clark, and yes...they're higher. (About $79) Both rooms are doubles, so if any of you can stand somebody else for a night, I would recommend shacking up and splitting the difference. The rooms are at the very conveniently located Doubletree Club, which is right off the highway.

PM me or let me know here if you're interested. I can hold these for a while before it's point-of-no-return, so don't worry too much about availability.

Darjeeling Limited opens next week, and Alamo South has a plethora of showtimes for it.

I definitely remember seeing stuff up for Sweeney Todd, so I'm guessing you're right on the money.

We'll know, for sure, within the next month...I think they update their calender of events every other month.

Ok back to the A&M game...are there any suggestions for post-Alamo activities? Obviously, 6th is an excellent choice, but the game is gonna let out somewhere around 5ish or so, I believe, which is kind of early.

So, any nominations?

I was thinking Chuy's...? It's right down from Alamo South on Barton Springs. Amazing Tex-Mex, wacky atmosphere (think Elvis)...

ETA - Also, there's Mangia Pizza...which I've been told to try by many informed Austinites. They claim to serve Chicago-style pizza with a southwest twist. In any case, I remember them from Man of the House...and anything that Tommy Lee Jones eats is a-ok in my book.

I've heard mixed things about that. The guy that owns Antone's works there, right?

ETA - Btw, not to burden everyone's creative thinking processes, but this IS Alamo South we're talking about. North Austin is a wonderful place and all, but let's try to keep it within a reasonable distance from the Alamo.

Also, let's take a head count...so far, it's me, ?Jeremy?, Greg Clark, ?Rene?, ?BillyG? that could actually make it...? Anybody else? Remember out-of-towners (I'm one of you, btw!) that there are still two open rooms at a reasonably discounted rate available, but don't let me destroy your excuses ahead of time. What's really cool is I think we might be able to get the hotel at which Greg and I are staying to take us to the other hotel at which I've secured rooms and pick anybody that might be there up...

We've still got over a month, people, and this is either gonna make or break the reboot of Texas Chewer solidarity. Well, maybe not something that dramatic, but I think we can all agree that it sure would be nice to really get something special going. So, give this is a shot, kiddos!

You could always take a picture solely for the purpose of the application. Dress up in something insane just for the picture and then call it a day.
