Microsoft Music Store Goes DRM-Free

‘The Tide has Turned for Consumers’

WASHINGTON (October 4, 2007) – Sending shockwaves through the industry and the crowd of the Digital Music Conference in Los Angeles today, Microsoft became the latest and largest music retailer to offer DRM-free digital music. Today’s announcement comes less than two weeks after Amazon.com launched its own DRM-free digital music store. The Microsoft Music Store will offer consumers more than one million DRM-free songs.

“The industry standard has shifted in the past six months and the tide has turned in favor of consumers,” Maura Corbett, a spokesperson for the Digital Freedom Campaign said. “The number of digital music retailers offering DRM-free music will soon out number those that do not, and consumers will soon live in a world where they can listen to legally purchased music when, how, and where they want. We congratulate Microsoft for joining the growing number of retailers and labels that have realized the best way to increase the sales of digital music, is to listen to their customers.

I reckon that´s good news actually.
Seems like quite a few companies are back on the path of rationale regarding their customers again. Though it is surprising that Microsoft of all the usual suspects kicks DRM into the trashbin.
I am just curious what Sonys stand will be on this issue, regarding this thread:http://chud.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105038

Zune 2, here I come! DRM-free!

Ha! Fuck you all for saying I was mad for buying a Zune!!!!!

I'm loving the looks of the new Zune, and the ability to play back recorded TV from my Windows Media Center would be would be pretty great. Plus, FM radio, which I know leaves some people cold, is a huge plus as far as I'm concerned- I love the local public stations.

BUT I'm in the design field and use a Mac at work. I prefer a Windows machine but at the office it's not my choice. The fact that the Zune isn't compatible with OS X at all destroys it as an option for me. You'd think in the interest of popularity they'd at least give you the option to mount a Zune as a hard disk, sync or no sync.

I've already got an iPod, and I like iTunes, but I'm not crazy about Apple as media provider- the options aren't versatile enough. If I didn't rely on the cross-platform abilities of my iPod so much I'd be all over Zune 2.

So does this mean the "play three times on a Zune" thing is no more?
Nope, with wireless share, it's now 3 plays over an unlimited period of time.

Though, can anyone tell me why they'd get a Zune so they can buy non-DRM tracks? That strikes me as weird.
Ooh, so I can play a song a whole three times, no thanks.
Hold on...only three plays? What now?
If you wireless share a song between Zunes. Not if you purchase it from the Zune store.

Thanks for the clarification.

So, they're not changing that for the next Zune, then?
It's a mild change. It used to be "3 days or 3 plays - whichever comes first". The "3 days" aspect is gone. The 3 plays remains.

Ok, thanks for straightening that out.

Mild hindrance, though...doesn't stop me from slapping my thumb drive into my pal's computer and snagging the mp3. Bah, that's compensating for something that shouldn't need it, either way.
