Avenged Sevenfold can pull off some nice double harmonies with the guitars, but they did a pretty shitty version of "Walk". I mean it's fucking "Walk", how do you fuck that up really, any schmuck with a guitar could learn it in a few days.
I mentioned before that I've cooled to Lamb of God over the years, but damn this new stuff is legitimately great. Wrath seems to have broken their string of albums packed to the gills with filler and only a few great songs. There's really not one tune on here I would get rid of.
Like I've said many times, they have just been getting better and better with each album.
The only two Avenged Sevenfold songs I like are Bat Country and Little Piece of Heaven so I can't say you're going to get much more out of that CD other than what you've already heard Billy.

When Sacrament was first released I would have agreed with that statement whole-heartedly. Now I don't think I could stand listening to it all the way through.

I used to think Ashes of the Wake was their weakest. Now I'm convinced it's Sacrament. Although I do think "Walk With Me In Hell" belongs in the pantheon of great metal songs. God I love that tune.
I'd also add "Descending" and "Blacken the Cursed Sun", but I like Sacrament enough.

This is how I'd rate their albums, Sacrament and New American Gospel are actually pretty much on the same level for me.

1. Wrath
2. As the Palaces Burn
3. Ashes of the Wake
4. Sacrament
5. New American Gospel
6. Burn the Priest
Blacken The Cursed Sun's par for the course LoG, but the call and response bit at the end of that song makes it worthwhile.

Descending, Again We Rise, and Walk With Me In Hell are the three winners on that album.
I absolutely love Sacrament, and think Blacken the Cursed Sun is one of their best songs, but I think I'd have to list As the Palaces Burn as my favorite.

Also on Sacrament- big fan of Forgotten (Lost Angles) and Requiem.

It really does, I was listening to the album one day and dozed off, and the call and response bit got integrated in my dream it was pretty nuts. Though not as much as me singing "Seasons of the Abyss" or "Dead Skin Mask" (I don't really remember which one it was) in my sleep.

That's pretty much what I've discovered. It's a much better CD than most of what I've heard lately. It's really nice now hearing non-stop cookie monster vocals, but for A Little Piece of Heaven being pretty unique the rest of the CD just isn't...

Anyone seeing BLS on their tour this spring? They'll be in Houston in April. $45 for a small club though, kind of a rip off, but worth it for Zakk.

TOOL live back when Paul was still bass player:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkSoOLSyfYo

I don't know what's more amusing, Maynard's "drunk trying to ice skate" shuffle, or the fact Danny's drum kit takes up 3/4 of the stage.
For some reason Wrath (Lamb of God) is in Australian stores today. Only two songs in, but so far so good.

Edit:
Yep, like it. Solid album.
Spent a good deal of time studying last night and I think I played Wrath through on their MySpace page at least three times in the background. Really good album. Contractor owns my thoughts at the moment.
For anyone still interested in horrible turn-of-the-century era Euro-Power Metal,
the new Hammerfall album is the best thing they've done since Crimson Thunder.
After a few listens of Wrath I've got mixed feelings. There are some great songs, but leading into the second half of the album a certain 'sameness' sets in.

One reason for this is I got the collectors edition which has two extra songs on the CD. This may sound stupid, but I think I'd prefer the album if it stopped at Reclamation (track 11) like the regular CD does. Playing the full 13 tracks wears me out.
You could always just... not listen to the 2 bonus tracks ?

Yes I know that. And if I didn't break my iPod I could simply not include them.

But since I'm on old tech at work (CDs) I usually listen to a full album from start to finish then put on another one. Anyway, I did say it may sound stupid
post #469 of 1381
Well, at least they kept "Condemn the Hive" for the Japanese disc then. Also, does the collector's edition come with a DVD or something or is it just the two extra tracks?

And speaking of LoG, Randy Bylthe's side Halo of Locusts have video up for the song "Cornada", it's pretty good stuff.

Just two extra tracks for a few dollars more and a different case (three panel cardboard one rather than the standard CD case). My impression of the other tracks was they sounded a bit more produced ala Sacrament.
Well then standard it will be for me, I'll just download the three bonus tracks.

So, what's the best metal album of 2009 so far? Sadly, I'm horribly behind, so I'll have to refrain from commenting much.

Here are a few albums that have been released (or leaked) so far:
Absu - Absu
Blut aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars
Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague
Cattle Decapitation - The Harvest Floor
Destroy Destroy Destroy - Battle Sluts
Ephel Duath - Through My Dog's Eyes
Fen - The Malediction Fields
God Forbid - Earthsblood
Kalisia - Cybion
Kreator - Hordes of Chaos
Lamb of God - Wrath
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Napalm Death - Time Waits for No Slave
Obscura - Cosmogenesis
Rumpelstiltskin Grinder - Living for Death, Destroying the Rest
Saxon - Into the Labyrinth

As far as the best album of 2009- I haven't heard Crack the Skye yet but the new Kreator is great, so is Wrath. Not a big fan of the new God Forbid, kind of bland, and the song writing just isn't up to snuff.

Crack the Skye without a doubt.

Unless "The Last Baron" turns out to be the audio of Brent Hinds sodomizing Troy Sanders with a microphone.
I just picked up Wrath, and I gotta say I'm loving the ending to "In Your Words".
I love Wrath as a metal album, but I am also amazed at how everything about LoG has improved. Blythe has a broader suite of vocal tricks, and thankfully has reduced the frequency of that low-to-high throat clearing thing he seemed to do all the time on the earlier albums. The guitars are tight and there are way more actual riffs, something I felt was mostly missing from the other stuff. The production values are incredible. And those fucking drums, jesus, they're huge and notey and just totally perfect.

To me this is a gigantic evolutionary leap for a band that was already pretty damn good.
One thing I don't get is how a lot of metal heads seem to label LoG metalcore. I honestly don't see it, there's nothing particularly hardcore to them, I just find it weird.

Also, two bands that I;m currently grooving to lately are All Shall Perish and Whitechapel.

That bothers me too, they are not even close to metalcore nor were they ever. I think alot of people that are throwing these labels around dont actually know what they mean. It's just that LOG became started gaining in popularity around the same time KSE, Shadows Fall, and a whole slew of metalcore bands, so they are unfairly lumped into the genre.

I'm not a big fan of whitechapel, but All Shall Perish are great.
Just another case of metal heads being up their own asses about things.

Also, here's this for fans of Dethklok and The Goon.
I'll probably pick it up, it is being written by Eric Powell and Brendan Small so it should good.
Lately, I bought a used copy of Metal Church's selt-titled debut. I used to own it years ago, but I wore that thing out and needed a new copy. It still kicks lots and lots of ass.
I've been on a bit of a Crowbar kick as of late, and I gotta say Time Heals Nothing is a really awesome album.

The new Heaven and Hell single, "Bible Black," is streaming now:

Yea, that song's not really doing anything for me. I'm still looking forward to the album tho.
I came across this chart of metal names, I think it's pretty funny. Especially the 'triple umlaut' being 'physically impossible', and of coarse the Faulkner References, how did I not know there's a band called Corncob Rape?
Jason is going to reunite with Metallica at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction:

Long as they give Cliff Burton his due somewhere in there, I'm cool with that.

Frankly though, much as Newstead comes off as a nice guy in interviews, Rob Trujillo's made me not miss him as a bassist at all.
Him doing vocals on "Seek and Destroy" and occasionally "Whiplash" live was always great I thought.
Yea, that's one area where Jason was head and shoulders above Rob. He really added alot to the performance with his backup vocals.

Don't forgot Creeping Death, btw.

The new Heaven and Hell came out today. Anyone pick it up?

It's a solid 8/10 for me. Nothing ground breaking, but it doesn't need to be. Dark, doomy riffs, Dio still sounds great, even at 63. I'd say it's better than Dehumanizer, and a notch below Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules.

I got it and I basically agree with you. You pretty much know what to expect from Heaven and Hell at this point but hey, it's still fucking good.

Anybody listen to the new Chimaira?

EDIT: Also, anybody else agree that Killswitch Engage releasing a SECOND self-titled album is a bad decision that's just going to end up confusing people?

I listened to the whole thing on their MySpace, it's good it has more of a doom almost black metal vibe to it, there's quite a bit of guttural/death metal vocals peppered all over the album. It's not as breakneck as their last two albums but it's heavy and has some great grooves to it in addition to the synths making more of a presence in the music which just works really well and adds a lot of atmosphere to the music, I gotta say it's always great when a band decides to take a chance and do something different. I like it quite a bit and will definitely be picking it up on Friday.
I made a point to buy the new Heaven and Hell today. I really want them to continue making music together. On first listen, I like it better than Dehumanizer, but it didn't have any tracks grab me. I look forward to seeing them live (and suggest to everyone to check them out). I caught them in Columbia, MD on the 2007 tour and was astounded how good Dio sounded. Too bad there were 6 girls in the entire ampitheatre...

Considering all of 6 people knew Killswitch had an album before Alive Or Just Breathing, no.

Shit I own that album and I totally forgot that their forthcoming isn't their first self-titled.
I think it's just plain lazy.
So the new Chimaira is pretty damn good in my opinion, I think it's the best album they've put out so far.

Also, the latest from Kylesa is really good too.

Dream Theater's new song 'A Rite of Passage' is available for a free download, TODAY ONLY. After that, it will be available as streaming content only.

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/ariteofpassage

I dig it.
I don't love the entire record, but Nadja's slow, heavy cover of Slayer's 'Dead Skin Mask' is pretty great. That's been on repeat for a few days now.
Speaking of 'Dead Skin Mask', I just dusted off my copy of Seasons in the Abyss, and I kind of forgot how good it is. I think that was Slayer at their peak, even more so than Reign in Blood. Too bad it was Lombardo's last album.
