Also for you theater nerds, coming in the spring season:

A revival of West Side Story
Jane Fonda in Moises Kaufmann's new "music-heavy play" 33 Variations

So I'm making my way through NYC the 13th through the 17th. Any tips for some happenings worth checking out? I'm seeing the Late Show with Letterman Monday and Titus Andronicus the night before, but those are the only things set in stone.

So I came in here to post that Lola Montes is playing at Film Forum next week through the 1st, and it's a pretty awesome movie to see on the big screen if you haven't.

Then I saw this (http://www.filmforum.org/films/dassin.html) and almost squealed out loud.

This is pretty cool, too, though a lot of it has passed already: http://www.filmforum.org/films/breadlines.html But still, King Kong! 42nd Street! It Happened One Night! Scarface! Little Caeser!

Leave Her to Heaven, one of the first and probably the greatest of the "crazy bitch/woman with a grudge" movies, playing in a restored print at Film Forum for one week, starting tomorrow.

This is pretty amazing. Lolita. Strangelove. A Man for All Seasons. Hard Day's Night. Zulu. And Bunny Lake is Missing.

Good News All chewers...if Free Drinks are on your mind. June 24th 2009, is a great time to go to the pour house. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is hosting a party at...The Village Pourhouse, a pub at...63rd Third Ave at 11th St. This is a...Member Appreciation Party (I just joined. The Membership is $25! However, Non Members can join as well for a mere...$10!) The Party is 6-9pm on next Wednesday.

I am going, is anyone else?
So you get free drinks for only $10?
Hmm, another chance for a Chewer to possibly get a sighting of Fleed. Alex? You available?
Judas Booth, Oops! If you are a member...it's free! Otherwise it is...$10!
Did anyone post about this yet? BAMcinemaFEST is starting this week (tomorrow, in fact) in Brooklyn, bringing a couple excellent looking flicks and a ton of great repertory screenings. It's basically BAM's old "Sundance in Brooklyn" festival, only on a larger scale.

BAMcinemaFEST 2009

I've got my tickets for Bronson, Big Fan, Humpday, You'll Never Miss Me, The Exploding Girl, Dead Man (!!), Royal Tenenbaums and Fritz Lang's classic Metropolis with live music by 3epkano (!!!!). Anyone else heard of this/is going?
And holy shit on top of the BAM fest and NYAFF this summer brings yet another awesome festival from the Museum of the Moving Image and the Musueum of Arts and Design, focusing on the 50th anniversary of the French New Wave: http://tinyurl.com/lyfppj

Someone doesn't want me to sleep or even lead a somewhat normal life this summer. Fuuuuuuck.

I'm going to make a sincere effort to catch the ZULU screening at MOMA that afternoon, so the temptation to add the short detour is pretty strong.

I'll be in beautiful Kew Gardens the evening of Thursday, the 25th of June. I have to work the next morning so will turn into a pumpkin at 8:00 but, if anyone would like to get together for dinner, I'm available.

Cool Shit in NYC is personified by the ultra-rare chance to see THE LONGEST NITE on the big screen. Persistent rights issues mean you can forget any replacement for the shitty decade-old out-of-print DVD ever seeing the light of day, barring a minor miracle. If you haven't seen this film and you miss it while living in or visiting New York or the immediate vicinity, hang your head in shame. Lau Ching-Wan versus Tony Leung is better than whatever you had planned.
MoMa is showing all kinds of goodness in the next few days. THE SERVANT, BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING, A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, BIRTH OF A NATION (with REBIRTH OF A NATION!), DR. STRANGELOVE etc. etc. I've never been so happy to have a CUNY I.D. (which, of course, means free admittance to the museum AND all film screenings!). Check it: MoMA's Film Schedule

Fuck, that sounds cool. If this goddamn fest wasn't running concurrent with BAM's cinefest I would definitely check it out but alas the schedules are conflicting. Shee-it.

Watched The Shining drunk at the IFC a couple of weeks ago. Great time.

So many fun activities have been thrown out for next week by you guys.

One of the midnight shows? Midnight shows here in the city, with the right crowd, are fucking great. Have you seen The Room? That's the ultimate midnight crowd flick; one of the funnest viewing experiences I've ever had. David Cross (impersonating Wiseau) and H Jon Benjamin (as "Denny") introduced it too, which was hilarious. Also saw The Warriors a few weeks back at the Sunshine, another great crowd.

For the brave, bold or toasted...Bring your wire hangers!

MOMMIE DEAREST at Chelsea Cinema. Thursday June 25th. The 7 pm showing is hosted by Hedda Lettuce.

Toying with trying to make the 9:30. As intriguing an experience with Ms. Lettuce sounds, I'd actually prefer to see this on the big screen straight.

Anyone on Long Island, the Huntington Cinema Arts Centre has a fantastic late night series every Saturday night through the end of summer. Check it out:

Predator

July 11
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Earth Girls Are Easy

July 18
Dead/Alive
Creepshow

July 25
Up In Smoke
Cheech & Chong's Next Movie

August 1
Big Trouble in Little China
Army of Darkness

August 8

South Park: The Movie

August 15
Robocop
Starship Troopers

August 22
5th Annual
All Nite
PAY-TO-GeT-OUT
HORROR

as always ... TBA!
I went to one of these shows last year (Taxi Driver/Pulp Fiction) and it was a blast. They play old serials or cartoons between films too, which is a cool bonus. If only it wasn't such a bitch getting to Huntington using the public transpo I'd probably go to all these, but alas, I'll probably end up only going to one or two again.

A little non-movie related bunch of fun:

Secret Science Club is a free series of lectures that take place once a month at a bar in Brooklyn (complete with bad facial hair and fixed gears). Wonderful place, great atmosphere and the speakers are pretty experienced professionals in their field. This past month they had Dr. Donald Johanson, the guy who discovered Lucy and he spent about two hours, in grand oratory fashion, explaining why evolution is the way to go.

They meet the second Tuesday of each month.
The Purple Rain sing-a-long sounds awesome. A bit of alcohol in my system and I'll be good to go.

I'm catching a screening of Funny People tomorrow night at the Museum of the Moving Image with a discussion with Judd Apatow to follow. Should be a good time.

I just purchased a ticket to the midnight show of The Room on the 28th. I must see what all the hoopla is about.

Nifty. I've got a friend who'd love this. Thanks for the heads-up, Alex!

No prob, probably going to be checking it out myself! Just found this video of them performing it last year and it's pretty great- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHafQLEAehU

Shitload of Awesome Films Celebrate New York Critics Circle's 75th Anniversary @ MoMa: Goodfellas, Grand Illusion, Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, among others.

MoMa is also showing a bunch of their recent acquisitions, like the LOTR trilogy, Moulin Rouge! and Sin City. Also Wedding Crashers and Hairspray (the new one). Say whaaa?
Just want to say thanks for the free film night on Sunday, Alex. I'll be there. Will there be throwing-spoons provided?
Now I definitely have to go to this thing to meet the almighty Jesse.
Haha didn't even know about the spoons thing. There won't be but I'm sure they won't mind if you bring your own. Be great for some more of you folks to come out! I'll be there around 5 for the BBQ.
Had a fantastic time last night. My throat was sore from yelling so much and I met some very cool people. It was my second Room experience in two weeks and it can't be matched.
Glad you made it out, man. Thanks to the other guys as well, this was definitely the best screening so far. The people who had seen it before made it even better.

Wednesday! Beatles Rock Band!
This was a lot of fun. I brought the guy who fucked up the projector halfway through. That movie failed beyond my wildest expectations.

I'm likely coming back for more on Beatles Rock Band night.
I'll be there tonight as well.
So The Room was such a big hit that the owner of the bar wants to do it again as their last movie this summer. I won't be hosting but I'll most likely be attending once again. I'll let you know...
Is it going down, Alex! I need to know!!!
I'm hijacking your lovely thread momentarily for some question askin', namely:

What "Cool Shit in NYC" is there to do that's relatively inexpensive? I'm down for a few days at the very start of Oct (1-5, counting arrival and depart) with a friend but we're still not sure what to do other than check out the 'sights'. Any ideas or tips be greatly appreciated.
Trejo, Eating is...inexpensive if you go to the East Villiage. The cheapest place is...2 Bros Pizza on St. Marks Place (8th St) between 2nd and 3rd ave, has 2 slices and a soda for $2.75. Schnippers West 40th and 8th (in the New York Times bldg) has food for under $6. Grey's Papaya on 37th 8th ave has a drink and 2 hot dogs for $4.50. Across the street is a 24 hour...White Castle. Between 51st/52nd St and 9th Ave, is...Island Burgers and Shakes which has $6.00 burgers. Time Out New York lists all kinds of free-$10 events, ranging from tours, street fairs, free movie passes etc. TONY arrives in stores on Wednesday, and lists NYC events for the next 7 days.
Do the exact opposite of what was just posted. I can't think of more awful places to eat. There are tons of non-chain restaurants for reasonable prices. Though browsing Time Out New York is a good suggestion.
