Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow

Not sure how many people read 'The Golem's Mighty Swing', but the author James Sturm has a new book coming out about one of the most interesting and inspiring sports figures in history, Satchel Paige. A larger than life character with the talent to match, he was denied his chance to pitch in the majors until he was 41. And he still had great stuff.

If you read the previews it looks like Sturm and Rich Tommaso have nailed that deliberate, unique cadence of baseball, especially in the hands of a master like Paige.

December. Good gift idea.

Its definitely got that particular layout feel of Sturm's. The presentation of the wind-up very much reminds me of Golem's Mighty Swing.

Sturm's previous bio-comic, Houdini: The Handcuff King, is much recommended by me. Layouts by Jason Lutes (Berlin), finished art by Nick Bertozzi (The Salon). Good stuff.

I have not read that Houdini book. Gotta check it out.

It's a fairly simple story--one day in the life of Houdini, basically. But I think it was the simplicity of it that I appreciated the most. And Jason Lutes can stage a story and lay-out pages like a motherfucker.
