Because I'm not enough of a fucking walking cliche, I decided to pick up a couple of hairless (Sphinx) rats yesterday, the first pets of my own in probably a decade.

They're just a few weeks old, and still have a little downy hair on them, but they're going to lose it. They're pretty goddamn cute if I do say so myself, and friendly as hell. Here's a couple of crappy cell phone shots of them.

My problem? I have no idea what to name them. My girl is set on naming one Barton Fink, but I think that's lame. I don't want any metalhead/horror fan jokes either, no Anton LaVey or Lord Therion Van Crouten or whatever.

Help me think of two names and I'll hook you up with a bunch of horror movies and goodies and stuff!

Hortense and Macabee.

Little boy rats or girl rats? Or is it not important as they don't come when you call them anyway?

Boy rats. One's kinda shy so far, the other has no problems coming up to me and jumping in my hands. I guess it doesn't matter about the name, though.

They apparently are pretty intelligent and can learn to do tricks and such, but we'll see... I've only had them a day!

Well let's see, you like heavy metal...how about Benny and The Jet?
Aw. Hairless rats are so warm, and wrinkly. So a name that suits a wrinkled up old man.

Or, I dunno, Harold & Maude.

Do we know their respective gender(s)?

Have they gotten comfortable enough in their new home to start showing much personality? Like the curious one and the nervous one, the biter, the one that is obsessed with the salt...

One loves sunflower seeds more than anything. I considered naming him Mulder for a nanosecond but then realized I'd have to slit my wrists after doing that.

That's not bad.

I was considering Sammy the Bull and Henry Hill for a second...

Optimus Prime and Sid Bream.
Dolemite and Superfly.
George and Lenny.

I want to win some goodies and all, but, Death Surge, that's awesome.

Oh, they're cute! I do think that little old man names would suit them. I like giving completely inappropriate human names to pets. It ratchets up the cuteness factor.

Actually.. if their Sphinx rats, something cool and.. egyptian

Anubis & Horace?
Hanta and Virus

(Note: LD wins the thread.)

I like Horace! It's both Egyptian and old man-sounding.

Hah! Didn't even think of that.

If not, might I suggest Pancho and Lefty?

Shouldn't you be rescuing these things from your neighborhood Taco Bell instead of buying them?

Then again, they are hairless. But you could've shaved the rescue rats.

As for teaching them tricks, give clicker training a go. Works great for dogs and horses and seems like something well suited for rats too, maybe.

I got nothin' for names.

Thanks for the references. Some of these are going over my head.

Joe- Hanta is good. Couldn't remember the name of that one. Hanta Virus and Black Plague?

You're good at this, Dickson.

Hanta and Ebola.

Black Plague can be your cat. (They can carry plague-laden fleas better than a hairless rat, which won't maintain a flea infestation)

Rizzo and Gonzo
Nicodemus and Mr. Ages

Dickson's biting my Yul and Telly suggestion up the page. Back off my hairless names!

Alopecia & Areata - hairless AND ethnic sounding. Shorten to Al and Ari for old man sound.
I do have to say, I like Sacco and Vanzetti, or Statler and Waldorf.

Or, here's something to think about. My college boyfriend and his roommates got three little kittens. They named them Resident, Boxholder and Occupant so they'd always get mail. Nicknames for short were "Resi, Occi and Boxy". You could always borrow two of those names - I'm sure after 20 years, they won't mind.

You can try any of these "clever" names or you can be efficient and call them One and Two like I did with my goldfish.
