Funky Winkerbean

Tom Batiuk (Northeastern Ohio represent!) can lay it on pretty thick sometimes with this cancer and grief storyline, but I'm surprised at how affecting it's been, especially near the end. I've always enjoyed this comic strip, primarily because Batiuk's been unafraid to deal with "real-world" issues in an honest way.

In any case, far better than "For Better or Worse" and, in my unfounded opinion, proof that the comic strip still has some viability as an art form left.

Unfounded being the operative word. This strip is manipulative, sentimental garbage.
In my unfounded opinion, Calvin and Hobbes is a fantastic work of art that absolutely proves the vitality of the medium. I don't know much about this Funky Winkerbean story, but I hardly think that comics needed "revitalizing".

Especially not from fucking Funky Winkerbean, a strip tailor made to make 40 year old women sniffle.

I just wonder when in the hell is Beetle Bailey finally going to get promoted.

That Blondie sure is a babe, though! Am I right, fellas?
Wait? Isn't the blond basically the drag version of the brother?

It seems to me that we wouldn't have all these problems in America today if we'd all just left things with The Family Circus, like God intended. Peanuts and its ethos of "self-examination" started us down an ugly path.

I have to admit though, after a few gin 'n' tonics, I sometimes kick back with a weeks worth of "Sally Forth" and giggle myself silly.

I've been reading the cancer story merely because it's right next to the easy crossword in the local paper. It's terrible.
The only thing worse than Winkerbean was its spin-off Crankshaft.

Rath's next thread : "I empathize with Garfield because I too hate Mondays."

To complete the derailment, here's what Blondie used to look like...

Ouch. (Still, it's not like I didn't know it was coming.)
Also off topic, but I fucking hated For Better Or Worse. Always a downer when I was just trying to read some Foxtrot before school.

Little known fact: Dagwood and Blondie were the inspiration for Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer".

Wow, that's an awful reproduction.

Everything on the comics page sucks. Except for The Born Loser. That guy just can't win!

Seriously though...losing The Boondocks was the death knell. I think my least favorite comic was Mother Goose & Grimm, because after Gary Larson retired, it so clearly tried to ape him and so horribly failed.

Also, Snuffy Smith is from some alternate universe where "funny" means "totally incomprehensible", but I think it has a circulation of about 2 papers.

Oh god, we had Snuffy Smith for forever here, being a Southern paper, but as soon as the last fan died, everyone voted that shit out.

This is all quite a shock if you haven't looked at a comic strip in 15 years.

He must be really hungry if she's that worried.

The "For Better for Worse/Ringu" crossover has actually been excellent so far.
Jesus Fucking Christ. You can smell the death off that comic.
How about Gasoline Alley or Apartment 2C? Great stuff!

The Slylock Fox where you have to help him investigate the rape and murder of Ferrina Ferret was heartbreaking.

(It was Count Weirdly, btw. You know because he left his wallet at the scene.)
I'm hoping for a Family Circus/For Better or For Worse "Dead Grampa" crossover adventure.

Billy will give himself away with that dotted-line trail he leaves.

You'd turn to crime too if you'd been denied puberty for almost fifty years.
Fun Comic Fact!: Family Circus is actually a daily adaptation of "It's a Good Life".

All I know is that there's some heavy-ass stuff going down for a comic called "Funky Winkerbean."

I once read an online discussion (maybe on the CHUD boards?) of The Family Circus, and someone wondered if Dead Grandpa and Not Me could see each other.

Blew my mind.
I'm almost sure I've seen Grandpa witness Not Me in action. Sorry to resolve that one for you.

Shit, man, you can do that with nostril sex.
Although it seems like forever since I read it, Get Fuzzy seemed to be worth a chuckle most days I saw it. I even out-and-out laughed at some of them. But that was a oasis in a wasteland, to be sure.
Next week, Garfield swats an annoying spider and Jon is forced to put down Odie, who comes down with a terminal case of septic shock.

The strip used to be a typical HO HO HO SILLY JOEK comic strip, but sometime in the 1980s the guy "fast-forwarded" the strip about 15 years so that all the teenagers were now adults with miserable, horrid, depressing existences.

I guess Funky On-the-Verge-of-Suicidebean wasn't as marketable as the original name, so it stuck.
"For Better or For Worse" was pretty bad. Isn't one of the kids gay in that comic?

Most genius comic strip/cartoon ever? "The Far Side". That was just pure genius.

Ida Know.
Only comic strips I read nowadays (outside of online ones) are Lio and La Cucaracha.
Lio, Get Fuzzy, and Pearls Before Swine are all great. But that's about it.
