Electronic Arts Inc. today announced an agreement with Elevation Partners to acquire VG Holding Corp. -- the owner of both BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios. This acquisition gives EA a strong competitive position in key genres in interactive entertainment: action, adventure and role-playing games. The two studios have been recognized for creating some of the highest-quality games in the industry.
Didn't see this coming.

Hmmm....Star Wars pics might be more appropriate...a line about "pitiful little rebellions" would probably fit in quite nicely.

Soon EA will own the rights to the words Video Game. Then they'll charge you per pixel to buy the game.

BioWare with EA's money could be interesting.

On the other hand, fuck all things EA. So there is that.

EA has occasionally put out some decent games, but they franchised the shit out of everything else.

Further evidence that if EA decided to go into the console business they'd do pretty damn well for themselves.

Cool beans. Maybe now we'll get Baldur's Gate 3? Maybe? Hmmmmm???

Huh? Are you saying they would kill if they made a EA console system? I'm not sure this would be worth it. They already have a large built-in audience on each the existing gaming systems.

You're probably right. Then they'd just have 1 release instead of 1 release available on every system known to god.
On the other hand, everyone would own one.

That and EA doesn't have the backflow of money from other ventures to keep a system alive long enough for it to catch on.

Cause we all know they spend their profits on whores and blow.

Actually, they're saving all the money to buy out Microsoft one day.

Carl probably had a seizure at this news.

It probably looked like a seizure but it was really just constant ejaculation.

And for that mental image, YOU'RE WELCOME.

Wow, I just took a look at studios acquired by EA that were subsequently gutted, and it isn't pretty (Bullfrog and Westwood, for example).

I've reflected on this for a day, and I'm still pissed. EA releases shit, unfinished games, have godawful downloadable content policies (Bioware's downloadable content for KOTOR was fantastic), and has oppresses employees.

I'm very worried about Mass Effect 2 and 3, although at least they'll be coming out in winter 2008 and winter 2009, respectively. Dragon Age? Forget about it. A CPRG only experience? EA won't like that. This mysterious unnamed MMORPG? Hopes=dashed. KOTOR 3 and Jade Empire 27? Looking good.

Bioware's saying all the right thing in interviews and on their web-site, but EA's track record speaks for itself. We'll see what happens. Mass Effect may end up being the last true "Bioware" game.

when companies purchase developers like Bioware, is there any contract to stop the employees from leaving? Could the talent quit and start a new studio if they wanted to?

that's what's gonna happen...the brains behind the show will take the cash and run.

I look forward to pressing up on the d-pad to order me some Papa John's Pizza in Mass Effect 3: Carbon...but only after buying the downloadable content patch that let's me use that already built in functionality. Of course, after ordering said pizza the game will crash.
