Uh... what? Is "Cronenbergian" a word? How long before kids are walking around with eyes in the middle of their hands like the Pale Man or Stephen Dorff in the Gate?

"In what may be considered a Van Gogh-ish reversal, Stelarc, formerly known as Stelios Arcadiou, will transplant a human ear onto his arm. The British-based artist has long evinced an interest in exploring body modification through the use of machinery and computers," ms_sue_collins writes. "His shows in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. have focused on extensions of the human form through the use of medical instruments, prosthetics, and robotics. 'The issue is not to shock. I want people to see this extra ear and speculate in a way about alternative interfaces on the body.' The ear plan did not appeal to the those in the British medical system, but Stelarc convinced the Australian-based Tissue Culture and Art project to help him. Samples of his cartilage and bone marrow will be removed and grown in a biotech lab. Plastic surgeons will shape the cartilage to resemble an ear, giving it lobes from skin grafts, and then place it under a flap of skin on Stelarc's arm. The artist initially wanted the ear attached to his face but had to settle for his arm when told it could damage nerves in his cheeks. He does hope to fit his new ear with a sound chip and proximity censor so that it can communicate to people who approach.

"Those who favor more traditional artistic expression are appalled at this latest example of what they consider a fringe movement within the world of modern art: '...if this is a success, we'll probably eventually get students leaving college with toes growing out their foreheads or something equally bizarre,' said Charles Thompson, founder of the Stuckists, a group founded in response to artists such as Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst. David Lee, editor of arts magazine Jackdaw, sees little merit but much shock in such 'stunts': 'He [Stelarc] is not exploring artistic at all. He's just putting an ear on his arm.' The British Medical Association has warned the artist that 'potential problems may be unknown at this stage.'

"Stelarc defends his Extra Ear project as part of his exploration of how it's possible to change the human body: 'Some people may be repulsed, but it is not the intention.' Jackdaw's editor does admit that such an extreme artistic endeavor 'causes discussion.... And at the end of the day that is not a bad thing.'"
