Alien^3: Assembly Cut

Okay let me get this out of the way. Alien is a masterpiece, Aliens is an awesome roller coaster ride, and Alien 3 was a dissapoinment, till now. I wasn't really into the franchise except the first 2 were great, but I'd like to add that the assembly cut of the movie is vastly superior and actually makes it worthy of the previous 2 (I really don't think there is anyway to save Ressurection, let alone AVP).

Yeah the special effects are shitty at times, but the look of the film rocks. Fincher has a visual palette from his first getgo that shows he is going to be a force to be recognized with. The performances are even more fleshed out here in this cut.

Now it sucks Hicks or Bishop couldn't be there, but it made sense that Newt had to go (the actress hit puberty and would of looked vastly different after coming out of cryostasis).

I know its an assembly cut, but now we got the alien coming out of an ox, but it still acts like a dog. The ability of the alien to take on its host seems interesting in the fact further sequels could take advantage of this and bring a new spin on things, even adding some unpredictability and suspense for sequels.

Okay my gushing is over.

I touched on my feelings about this in the "Alien 3 vs. Alien Resurrection" thread, but I'll expand on them slightly here.

This is not necessarily a good film, but it is a noble failure -- or at least, one of serious intention. I think the most successful thing about it is that it takes the idea that it's the last movie in a trilogy and commits to it. Ripley is fucked from the get-go, increasingly she realizes that there is no way out, and finally she has to come to grips with her own death. They really went for it, and I can respect that.

On the other hand, there is so much that doesn't work. It's true that there still isn't really enough character development of the prisoners for us to care for them. Sometimes the geography of the prison is confusing as shit (like the sequence where they try to trap the Alien in front of the piston and everyone is running around closing doors seemingly at random). And the story is awkwardly structured and way too long.

Ultimately, I agree with you: it's worthy of the previous two films. But, sadly, it's not as successful as it could have been. I give major props to Fincher for doing as good a job as anyone could do under difficult circumstances, though.

I wonder how many threads there are about these movies now. It seems to be one of the the subjects nobody ever tires of discussing and debating. Of course, there are few series that have included one of the greatest films ever made and one of the worst films I've ever seen, so I suppose that's discussion-worthy right there.

But still, I'm not sure this merited its own thread. There are plenty.

I really like that cut of the film.
