I hope you’ve got as big a grin on your face on as I do, and if you don’t, you obviously haven’t experienced Basket Case.

Frank Hennenlotter’s first film is still his best (although a strong case can be made for Frankenhooker), a gritty, disturbingly hilarious low budget horror flick. The touching story of an innocent yo0ung man who moves to NYC with his parasitic twin brother/abortion failure, Belial, it has it all- sex, murder, and stop-motion animation.

It’s also one of the few remarkable films that show a New York City that simply doens’t exist anymore, along with such classics from the same era as Street Trash and The Warriors.

This blu-ray release will be hitting on September 27th from Image Entertainment and Something Weird. Here are the specs-

  • New Full-Frame HD Transfer Preserving the Original 16mm Camera Ratio
  • New Video Introduction by Director Frank Henenlotter
  • Audio Commentary by Director Frank Henenlotter, Producer Edgar Ievins, and Actress Beverly Bonner
  • Rare Outtakes and Behind-the-Scenes Footage from the Director’s Personal Collection
  • Two Theatrical Trailers plus TV Spot
  • 2001 Video Short: In Search of the Hotel Broslin
  • Two Rare Basket Case Radio Spots
  • Gallery of Basket Case Exploitation Art and Behind-the-Scene Photos

All that for a measly MSRP of $17.97 ($13 on Amazon!). So good to see Something Weird back in business.

I don’t have many blu-rays and I’ve sold off a good chunk of my dvds, but this is one I need in my collection.
