Superhero Comic Books Hate Gays

Well, okay, there are a lot of gay superhero characters, but have you noticed how poorly they fared? I had no idea how much comic writers enjoy punishing gays.

Destiny died saving Freedom Force.

A lot of this shit is taken way out of context in the stories that they were featured. Well, save for Blarney Cock. Blarney Cock pretty much got what was described. But, he was a dick.

The author who wrote this story badly needs therapy: JERICHO: impaled on his father’s sword

I don't know most of these heroes/villains. Also, I don't believe the fates of gay characters in Watchmen should be in this lists. Their grisly fate was probably a reflection of the way gays are treated in comics.

Also, The Midnighter is dead? Didn't he just get a series?

I'm pretty sure he has a bunch of hearts. And Connor Hawke's a monk.

Is Thor still going strong? Yeah, that's right, you know what I'm inferring.

Batman's had a rough time lately.

I had a personal tirade over this list about a month ago, after reading Perry Moore's novel. I think he comes across as one of those overly sensitive gays who cries "Homophobia!" any time a gay character is treated poorly in the slightest. Many of these character incidents are taken WAY out of context simply to prove his point.

Also, his book sucks. He pisses me off as a fellow gay man.

Presented like that, it's a pretty grim picture, but you could spin it so that any group in comics looks like they're unfairly treated. All of the following are white, heterosexual males:

BATMAN: Parents murdered, sidekick crippled, sidekick killed, back broken, sidekick killed by family friend, dead sidekick returns from grave to antagonize him

GREEN ARROW: Lost fortune, blown up

SPIDER-MAN: Uncle killed, girlfriend killed, tricked into believing robot duplicates of his parents were the real thing, tricked into believing he was a clone, infant stolen (presumed dead), aunt shot

SUPERMAN: Cousin killed, beaten to death

Additionally, like Anderson said, most of these are taken way out of context. Bloke from X-Force was killed, but so was everyone else on the team, at one point or another. Concerning the Authority, Midnighter didn't die at all, and both Swift and Engineer were sexually humiliated in ways that are arguably worse than Apollo's rape. Of all the characters that I recognize on the list, the only two examples that are flagrantly homophobic are Freedom Ring (he's literally dicked to death) and Northstar (not so much that he's killed, but the fact that they killed him three times in like a month).

Why do people recommend The Authority to anyone who's not over 15? I read the first trade and it was shit. What you just wrote does not seem like it gets any better or any more mature.

Still less annoying than feminist comicbook fangirls.

It doesn't. In fact, I just re-read Miller's last issues earlier today, and they don't hold up real well. In my defense, I was 15 when it came out.

I have a lot of sympathy for female comic fans, but I really wish they would pick their battles more carefully. It makes them look kind of ridiculous when they wig out over every goddamn Marvel cover.
Phat's another bad use of context because every member of X-Statix was killed in the end. And he forgot Phat's lover, Vivisector, who also died, just like the rest of the group.

ELECTRO: realized he was a homosexual after a lengthy stint in prison

Got to love that Bendis.

That was Millar.

Damn, I must not have been reading that book. Where did it officially happen?
From what I remember, it was a one-off gag in the first twelve issues of MK : Spider-Man, involving Electro, Vulture, and a shapeshifting prostitute. Whether someone else then decided to make Electro gay full-time, I dunno. I sort of stopped reading that kind of bullshit.
Ok. It happened in that Marvel Knights: Spider-Man book. That's the first mention I see of it.

Checking out this list some more...who's Ned Campbell?

EDIT: To note that I just saw Brad's response. Yeah, Bendis has been carrying that stuff on over in New Avengers and other books. It's more of a background detail, though. Not like he's marching in parades right before a battle or something.

"ROBIN: exposed as a villain; explained that his turn to the dark side was due to his unrequited love for Batman"

I have not paid attention to Batman at all for years. Is this true?
I think that's the Joker faced Robin from Miller's Dark Knight Shits The Bed.

See, that irked me as well. Even in the Miller stuff, it's not even shown as being gay. It's shown more as a "YOU USED ME AS A FUCKING DECOY FOR A BUNCH OF PSYCHOS"! Then, Bats goes on this long-winded Miller rant about firing his ass for being a coward.

Interesting enough, there is a group of people trying to pass of the Miller Batman works (All-Star, Dark Knight Returns, Dark Knight Strikes Again) as an Oedipal nightmare.

"A wish dream of two homosexuals living together".
Yeah, that's what I thought.

And it is true, Frank Miller hates gay people.

If we can just get them to draw Power Girl a few more cup sizes larger, the patriarchy will have the feminist infrastructure completely in tatters.

Found it. I thought this was about Miller's work, not from Dr. Fredric Wertham.

Comic publishers aren't going to start making their scripters go to sensitivity and diversity class. We can't fool ourselves... the comic world is dominated by sexually repressed heterosexual males who like to live out their fantasies on the page. Look at TOP COW... now those guys are SERIOUSLY repressed. Every cover has scantily clad woman with massive boobs. Unless it's overtly discriminatory, I don't see the big deal. If you're gay and advocate, I'm sure there are far more worthy causes one could spend their time with. Just a thought.o much. That list is pretty deceiving, but I certainly don't disagree that comic book writers, superhero comic book writers, have an immensely shitty track record when it comes to the handling of gay characters, hell, most of them have the deft touch of an anvil even when they're attempting to show gay characters in a positive light (Judd "1000lb. Hands" Winick).

However, no one should begrudge the "revelation" that Rawhide Kid was only pretending to be gay. That awful fucking miniseries was one of the stalest, most insulting and piss-poor releases that I had the displeasure of reading that year.

I've had Perry Moore's HERO in my Amazon queue for a while, but I've also had the strong suspicion that it would be a waste of time and money, so I think I might just dump it.

What about Renee Montoya? She's a positive gay character.

Yeah, but her alcholism could be seen as a negative.
