After much speculation, Apple has finally announced that iTunes Plus is finally expanding - and keen to point out (perhaps to Amazon's chagrin) "The iTunes Plus catalog is now the largest DRM-free catalog in the world." Whilst three major labels are sadly missing in action - how many more hints do they need that DRM-free music might just be popular with their customers? - there is a plethora of independent labels now going DRM-free in addition to EMI such as "Sub Pop, Nettwerk, Beggars Group, IODA, The Orchard and many others."

In addition to the expansion of iTunes Plus, Apple has now officially dropped the price of the DRM-free tracks to the usual 99ยข per song in the US and 79p here in the UK (although there's no word on whether the upgrade pricing of $0.20 a song remains, or what's happening in other international markets).
We've already had discussions on the whole bootleg/legal download thing, but I think this is telling that Apple is dropping the DRM protection (speculatively) in response to Amazon's competitive influence. With all the talk about Radiohead's new album, it's going to be interesting to see if the future will play out the same way with pricing of legal music downloads.

I mean, cuz I, like all of you I'm sure, buy ALL of my music...legally...totally.

I've made several purchases from Amazon's mp3 service and been more than happy with the results. It's got me actually buying music instead of holding the CD at Best Buy and going "$12.99 for a ten song disc? Nope." Add in the iTunes selection and this could get people actually buying music again.

So, of course, the RIAA will try to destroy it with every ounce of their being.

Well, that's why the RIAA, to rend men's souls and punish college students.

I'll take a wild guess that he meant "that's why the RIAA [exists]"

Bought my first Amazon album yesterday. Very easy, only $9, and no DRM. I could have bought it from iTunes, but it didn't make sense. This is a smart move from iTunes though, as it evenes the playing field and points out the striking liability to Amazon, which is the pitifully small catalog.
