More fun in Bryant Park

At lunch over here, writing once again. No, no Sex and the City shoot.

Piece of contruction just came crashing down from the top of a building on 6th and 42nd. People screaming, debris all over the place. I exchange looks with a guy sitting next to me and he says in a typical understated New York way "That can't be good."

Looks like more stuff is dangling from the top. Hope no one got hit in the street.

Don't worry, Spider-Man will be along shortly to rescue Gwen.

I'm just mad it didn't happen last week.

"Sarah Jessica Parker Killed by Crane" just flows off the tongue.

"NOOO!! NOT MY QUIRKY PATRICIA FIELD WARDROBE!!!"

Aah, Lisa, if only it weren't true...

My room-mate almost got killed by a falling piece of construction, landed not three feet behind him. He just turned around, looked at it and kept walking.

Gotta love New York.

You can always tell who the real NYers are in times like that. These two cigar-smoking douchebags who had spent the previous hour taking pictures of each other with their cell phones ("You look just like Tony Soprano, dude!") were freaking out like little girls. Guy next to me went back to his lunch, I went back to writing on my laptop.

Billion emergency vehicles out there now, probably not any good news going to come of this.
I was walking to move my car one morning (damn alternate side of the street parking) and as I walking up the hill a tree limb, about a 1ft thick at least, broke and crashed down behind me. It missed me by about 2 seconds. People on the street stopped and looked while a couple of guys went "Woah!" Then everyone went back to what they were originally doing and the guys asked how I was doing and that I could have been killed by the tree limb. I shrugged my shoulders and kept heading to my car. Can't afford to get another damn parking ticket!

Alex, how's it working in Bryant Park? I've wanted to work out of there for a minute but I'm not how it works with the laptops and plug outlets.

I've never plugged it in there... not sure if there is a place for that. I just go with it charged. Loving it though, lot more relaxing than trying to do it at my day job. The internet ain't the fastest thing in the world, but it does the trick.

Is there some sort of list online of free wi-fi spots in the city?
Free wi-fi in New York City.

I don't know that it's comprehensive, though.

Thanks. I found a similar list but was looking for a better one... there doesn't seem to be a full (or searchable) list anywhere, which is strange.
Yeah, I tried and couldn't find anything better. It seems like there should be one, you're right...

I always wonder what it feels like to be the guy who operated the crane.
Have you ever dropped a full glass? You know that moment when you realize you've dropped it, and there's nothing you can do but stand there and watch it fall and smash on your floor?

It probably feels like that, only for longer, and with more praying that you haven't just killed someone.
That's not far from where I work.

Glad to hear no one was killed.

Ah, life in the Big Apple.
My wife works right near there, closer to 5th Avenue though, and my job will be moving to that area sometime next year. I think that construction site is actually my sooner-or-later-to-be office...
We should all meet up and get hit with debris sometime.
That would be a fun time!
And it probably wouldn't be hard to do. Good times. Good times. If it doesn't come from above it may come from below in this town.
Getting hit with debris? Shit, I'd walk down on lunch break to Bryant Park just for the chance!

"Glass? Who gives a fuck about glass?"

I should've walked down there and got cut by glass. Someone's getting sued for this.

Speaking of meeting up, Rath was mentioning to me about setting up a NYC CHUD Meet-up sometime in the immediate future. Anyone be down? Always a good movie playing somewhere in the city...
Hey, I'm down (tentatively).
I'm down for a CHUD NYC meet and bitch-about-movies at some point. I know, I'm from Jersey, but I may as well live in the city, I'm here all damn day.
My office used to be 10 blocks north of there until this summer when we moved over to the BMW Building (57th near 11th). I used to walk by Bryant Park every day. Seems like a nice little place to relax and surf the net.

I'd definitely be down. I can hang out and hear you all speak so much more intelligently about films than I could ever hope to.
I'd absolutely be up for an NYC get together.

I support the City meet n' greet wholeheartedly. I can't guarantee attendance, but if I can be there, I will.
It'd be weird seeing all of you. I associate so many of you with your avatars, like Millette's, if I ever met him, I'd be like, 'You're not a robot!'
I'd be up for a meet n' greet as well. There's always something worthwhile happening in this city, regardless of whether there's property damage involved.
But property damage sure makes it more worthwhile, don't it?

I'm sure we can find something to destroy, if need be.

I'm not going to be able to set something up for a little while, cause I'm going to be busy covering a bunch of stuff around Halloween (go figure, right?) but actually if anyone's interested in attending the NYC Horror Fest- let me know. I'm going to be covering pretty much the whole festival. The kickoff party is next wednesday night, and they have Jack Ketchum's A Girl Next Door playing next Saturday (although I know Iggy's seen it already.)

If I weren't headed to Italy next week I'd take you up on that.

Maybe we should try and set something up for mid-November. Any righteously good films out around then?

When it comes to destruction, I prefer to concentrate as much damage as possible in the area of my liver.

I'm partial to seeing the Mist, of course. Although I'd be good to go on American Gangster or Beowulf. Or Fred Claus. It looks so funny!

And yeah, a bar afterwards (or before, or during) should definitely be part of the night. It'll get us over our initial awkwardness and constant name-forgetting. (Who are you on the boards, again?)
I will only go to FRED CLAUS if I can pelt the idiots in the crowd with water balloons filled with BBQ sauce and Ranch dressing.

There's only been one NYC get together that I attended and it was in like 2000 or 2001. All of the people I met no longer post here or do so infrequently -- Johnny Butane, girlcreature, lowshot, Adam McAllister, and a few more long lost souls.

Anyhoo, I would love to see you all, but my schedule is fucking tight. Keep me updated and if I can be there, I will.

Edit: One caveat...I will not go to Queens. I know that's your spot Alex, but it's my least favorite borough. Yup, eeven behind The Rock (aka Staten Island).

Yeah, that's the most annoying part. It's hard not to call people by the message board names.
Yeah, no fucking nametags either. I met up with some folks from another board I frequented and someone passed out nametags with your first name and your board handle. I stopped going to that board altogether.

I agree with Diva on this 150%. I can't stand Queens, it takes forever to get out there and you get lost once you arrive there. Not happening. I've got a LSAT exam 12/1 so the closer we get to that date, the worse it'll be for me.

I wasn't going to suggest Queens... figured Manhattan would be a nice neutral ground for everyone. Hell, I'm not going to Brooklyn either, as I lived almost a year in that hell hole and refuse to go back, even though my girl's from there.

And worse than Staten Island, Diva? You're crazy. They even get electricity there, yet? I don't trust any place I have to take a boat to.

Any particular theaters in Manhattan people like the most? I'd suggest Midtown but there's fuck-all to do there as far as bars or cafes or something. We're not tourists, after all. There's no list of theaters playing the Mist yet, but I'm guessing we'll find something for the Friday after it opens. The movie opens on a Wednesday, but I'm figuring Friday the 23rd would be better.

Oh and no nametags. At least you won't have the messageboard name problem with me, heh...

It takes me 20 minutes to get to Midtown from Queens! And the streets are in a grid, same as Manhattan! Of all the outer boroughs, it's the easiest to get around in. Hell, I grew up in The Bronx, but I have no idea how to give directions to anywhere around there.
My wife just heard that the accident was from her company's NYC office (we are on vacation in Orlando).

Also I will definitely venture into the city for a gathering.

That week is absolute pure fucking hell for me. We are on the air 4 straight days. I am down for going out, should be off the air by 6pm on Friday. One potential hiccup for me is that a friend is closing down his bar in Midtown soon after that and that Friday may be a big blowout bash in the private room. I should know more as things get closer. But seriously, do not plan around me--I'm definitely not worth it.

I had a sweet game of paint ball on the Rock. The only good thing I experienced in Queens was watching the Mets get the shit beat out of them the last game of this season.

Friday the 23rd? Are we talking November? Cause that's Thanksgiving weekend. People are usually with family or shopping on Black Friday.

As for theaters, I'm partial to Battery Park City and know a ton of bars around there. They are more dive bar-y than trendy midtown bars, but the people are cool.
Yeah, there's no way that I can do Thanksgiving weekend - my entire family is making the trek into the city to visit.

But really, whatever day it happens to be, as long as it works best for the masses, I'll try my best to be there.

I have no idea what you're talking about, sure as my name's Robert Paulson.

I favor Kips Bay and Lincoln Center myself. I vote for a Mist showing. If not in the first weekend, then definately the second.

Kips Bay would be great for me, actually. Bunch of good places to go after there, if we like. I'm more a fan of dive bars than trendy ones, too, but not such a big fan of Battery Park. Plus it's close to Brooklyn, sometimes you get that stench drifting over.

Uh, yeah, and I didn't realize it was Thanksgiving. Forget that. Maybe the week after? November 30th?
Kips Bay is cool, as it has huge ass screens. But it's surrounded by trendy overpriced bars. We could take the 6 down to the East Village though. Lincoln Center has no stadium seating and the people who frequent it lately tend to be tourists who have no idea what movie they are going to see (it sucks the buzz and excitement from the room). I say nay on that option.
