The 10 Worst Films Directed By Actors

Poached from Jeff Wells: the 10 Worst Films Directed By Actors.

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment...by_actors.html

It's a shite list, overall. A whole host of disappointments are easily worse than three or four of the choices there.

Having BRAVEHEART at number one just reeks of baiting; MAN WITHOUT A FACE is a worse film.
How did Nothing But Trouble not make that list? Probably because few have had the displeasure of seeing it.
I can't believe there are no Vincent Gallo or Ed Burns movies on that list.
Yeah, the #1 slot might as well be wrapped around a carp pellet.

A THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE deserves notice.
Braveheart was a box office disappointment?

Oh man, totally. I saw that movie when I was 10, and even then I was like "what the hell was THAT?!?!"

That didn't exclude ROMANCE & CIGARETTES, which definitely doesn't belong.
Braveheart made $210 Million at the box office, I would hardly call that a "disappointment". I dug the flick, if only for the "over-the-top homophobia" it was hilarious!
I would include Asia Argento's "Scarlet Diva" on this list. Holy shit, that was miserable.
The Cable Guy? Pretty much Jim Carrey's best comedy? This list is invalid!

Colossal missed opps: Nancy Walker's immortal Can't Stop The Music and Stallone's Stayin Alive.
It's Jeffery Wells. Who gives a fuck?
Vinessa Shaw?

He didn't write the list, I just took the link from him. A blog for New York Magazine wrote it, which doesn't invalidate the 'who gives a fuck?' part.

I guess it depends on what you consider comedy, but I definitely think it's his best movie from the Ace Ventura/Dumb and Dumber part of his career. It was the first time his ability to be profoundly unlikeable (which came through unintentionally in the aforementioned) was used in an intentional, effective way.

And, yeah, Braveheart is absolutely the list's attempt at "controversial." It's shallow, but it's also never dull, it looks good, and it works as sort of a big, dumb, action movie, if not a historically-sound period piece. It's better than most, if not all, of the other movies on the list, at least.

They got one right: Beyond the Sea. Good God.
I cannot believe there isn't a single Kevin Costner film on that list.
As I scrolled down, I kept waiting for On Deadly Ground to show up.

It didn't.

Harlem Nights definitely deserves its position, if only for wasting a great comedy cast.
Is anyone else as sick of baiting as I am? Honestly, when I see something like this or Blender's Worst Lyricists list it makes me want to beat the shit out of a random teenager.

Probably not. That is a pretty irrational impulse.
Hey, at least STAR TREK V is on there.
What about Trees Lounge?

Was I the only person who liked Harlem Nights?
Trees Lounge was a decent little flick. Is there a Best Films Directed by Actors thread? Because that thread would have some Cassavetes on it, some Charles Laughton on it, and The Indian Runner on it.
And, maybe, I dunno, Citizen Kane.
Well, sure, but no one needed that pointed out (ETA: If they did, fuck that person.). But if I can get somebody to netflix some Faces or Indian Runner or Night of the Hunter, someone's day got better. And that someone is probably Patrick Ripoli.
As far as best movies go i'd like to see The Two Jakes on the list.
Braveheart? Seriously?

Mustn't be baited...mustn't be baited...

What leads you to see things that way? Man Without A Face seems to be the strongest film has directed to me. The weaknesses of his other films are completely missing: he isn't hurling anachronisms at you every ten seconds, there aren't multiple scenes of needless and horrific violence, he isn't demonizing the British, and the only scene that could possibly be construed as anti-semtic in any way, shape, or form is the scene where he selects The Merchant of Venice as the class reading (the speech Portia gives at the end of the trial).
I'll see your Braveheart, and raise you a How the Grinch Stole Christmas, a Far and Away, and an Edtv.

That list just bumped Romance & Cigarettes and What Is It to the top of my must-see list.

Yeah that clip of Romance & Cigarettes has me utterly fascinated and curious.
Glover shows "What Is It?" at horror fests. The Q&As that follow tend to go til 3am.
I know it's already been said, but Braveheart? I'll even defend Cable Guy, but Braveheart? Come on.

The only one on that list that absolutely belongs there is Beyond the Sea, which was clearly Spacey's none-too-subtle way of saying, "I love Bobby Darin, but I really really REALLY love me."
How is it that Stallone isn't on that list somewhere? "Staying Alive"?

Every frame of MAN WITHOUT screams to me that it's a movie so badly wanting to be important and serious and real. When really it's just as manipulative as everything else Gibson has made, only without the violence.

And while you say the film doesn't feature homophobia, what it lacks is the commentary against homophobia that was in the book. A significant omission, since his character was originally gay. The book, not necessarily good, at least has some balls; the film has none.

It's an unusual film- the two halves are almost completely unlike one another.
Very worth a watch, though.
I never saw it, but I somehow doubt that Fred Savage's "Daddy Day Camp" is a better film than any of the ones on that list. In fact according to IMDB voters, every movie ever made save for "Who's Your Caddy?" is a better film.
I fully back Braveheart being on the list, it's an odious piece of filmmaking.
Here's a good top five actors directing list:

Very American Centric though.

I'd say Nil By Mouth, La Haine and Hana-bi could probably replace a few films on the list Andre provided.
