Malibu Is Burning... Again

The devil winds of Santa Ana started up big time last night, which means it's time for fires.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/10/21/wildfire.ca/index.html

This fire is literally feet away from my office. A house I can see across the street from my office that some jackass built to look like a castle burned down. A church I pass every day on the way to work burned down. More than a thousand acres have burned. Homes of the rich and famous are threatened. It was caused by a downed power line.

I don't think I'll be going to the office tomorrow.

This has the smacking of 1993 all over again although clearly not to the scale those fires were.
Man, I remember those fire back in '93. I was living in the SFV but I could still see the glow from the fires in the horizon. Keep safe, Mike.
You talk about the glow of fires. Hell I can remember being at CSUN in '03 and just looking out on afternoon and seeing that big red ball in the sky in the west. Those fires were in the Simi Valley area. Every few years, this shit happens.
They're not heading towards your home are they? Stay safe.
Uh no actually, they're not. I'm located on the south end of the San Fernando Valley bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains. Malibu is west, north west of me by quite some distance.

In '05 I believe there was a big fire that shut down campus. Driving home down Nordhoff as I got to Topanga I looked forward and saw a huge area engulfed in flames.

I grew up in Simi Valley. My parents couldn't get out of the city and said the entire valley was a big bowl of smoke. The air quality was terrible.

I live over in Palms and the smell of the fire last night was strong enough that I thought something in my neighborhood was burning.

Malibu's Most Wanted? Fire extinguishers.
And oddly enough, 60 Minutes is doing a story about megafires as I type this.

The sun was neon red tonight. Never a good sign.
Yeah, it's the classic site of late October in LA. A big red ball in the sky.

I was in Santa Clarita earlier today. Holy Shit there was smoke everywhere. Although the weirdest thing was when I got up there, you had this huge cloud of smoke overhead and yet because the winds were blowing in such a way you couldn't smell anything. Of course it got worse and my mother and I could smell it inside the mall.

Although I can't remember if CSUN was shut down in '05 for fire? I know it had to have happen in '03.

Of course I remember one night in the Summer of '04 driving north on the 405 and just seeing this line of fire in the mountains ahead of me.

I hear that there is a fire in Canyon Country too! What the hell is happening to L.A.?!

Yeah and it makes me wonder if radio stations will play "Los Angeles is Burning" by Bad Religion?

I heard with the Agua Dulce fire, it was affecting a big horse related area. I did seriously wonder what is going on with Belethedheliel seeing how this is connected with her line of work.

Oddly enough I swear after all these fires, we're going to get rained on so hard in the winter and you can guess what happens next. That's right, mudslides.
Don't be such a pussy, Hocken. It's us survivors that will have to deal with the locusts, after all.

I remember when Laguna burned the last time in what 93 or was it 94, then the down town and beach got washed way in a river of water. I remember watching the fire march up over the hill to Lemon Heights where they stopped it cold. The fires in LA as of yet are not that bad I think or as bad as the fire the San Bernardino mountains a couple of years ago. Now SAN DIEGO on the other hand is toast.

Actually I don't live in the areas that get burned by fires then have mudslides a few months later. But I'm telling ya this shit runs like clockwork.
San Diego is indeed toast. For those of you down here, they just announced that all San Diego County schools will be closed tomorrow.

Thankfully our family is safe and sound. Hope you all are too.
Yeah I remember that back in '03 San Diego County was royally fucked by those fires and a seriously under equipped SDFD.

I've got family living on a hillside in Escondido just outside the mandatory evacuation area. Still waiting to hear how things are going for them.

Just because there hasn't been a serious earthquake in such a long time doesn't mean nature needs to find other ways to fuck with us...
Damn straight.
Just found out the house next door to my relatives burned but theirs is ok for now.

Wow. Never had the fires get this close to anyone I knew.

If you think that overdue earthquakes are bad wait tell the 50+ year overdue hurricane hits. Anyway that is what I have always understood the 100 year flood to be. It should make Katrina look less devastating. Just think of hurricane rains falling on South cal for about 2 week strait would do. Once it make land fall the storm has no were else to go.
uh, there is no "Overdue Hurricane" for Southern California. The waters simply don't get that warm. Climate Change concerns not with standing.

And speaking of which, I get a little tired of the phrase "Overdue" for an Earthquake. There's no exact way to predict an earthquake and geologic time works on its own calendar. Sure there are cycles, but it happens when it happens.

Two word for you the Child, the Child, When the Child get really bad we can get a Hurricane. We came very close to one in the 90s.
Are you talking about El Nino or La Nina? Either way I can't understand just what the hell you're talking about.

Now we've been hit by hurricane remnats coming up from Baja California. And only two examples of hurricanes coming to CA in the past ten years according to Wikipedia are:

Quote:
September 13-September 14, 1997: Hurricane Linda was at one point forecasted to make landfall in California.[11] Instead, it moved out to sea.
September 25-September 26, 1997: After making landfall in Baja California, Hurricane Nora maintained tropical storm status into California and Arizona. Moderate to heavy rains fell across southeast California and Arizona, with a new 24-hour maximum for Arizona 305 mm (12 inches) falling in the Mogollon Rim. Damage totaled several hundred million,[12] including US$40 million to lemon trees. The remnants of the hurricane flattened trees in higher elevations of Utah as the circulation aloft was slower to spin down than its remnant surface low. There were a few indirect deaths caused by the hurricane.[12]

Eenin doesn't seem to understand hurricanes travel from east to west, meaning Southern California is pretty much the last place that would ever be hit by a major storm.

Also, I've had a Dead Kennedys song stuck in my head for the past few days. Just can't get rid of it.

No junk food, just earthly goods
I ate weird berries in the woods
Now I'm seeing colors, I'm getting higher
I think I'll start a forest fire

There's a forest fire climbin the hill
Burning wealthy California homes
Better run run run run run run
From the fire

But some of us stay and watch
And we think of your insurance costs
And we laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh
At your lives

Windows covered with bars
Security guards
Is that a house or a fortress?
Against the rest of the world

Windows covered with bars
Security guards
Is that a house or a prison
How you gonna get out?

Electric bull and your tennis courts
Pink sports cars and your boats
Getting fried fried fried fried fried fried
By the fire

Windows covered with bars
Floodlights for the yard
It's a pleasure to watch you
Watch it all melt

But hey!
What about the cocaine
Stockpiled in the basement
Be a hero and save it
You know you're gonna need it

Where's your brand new pretty wife
She might still be inside
Either save her or your cocaine from the fire

But the gates and doors are locked
'Cause the burglar alarms went off
Ever wonder why we laugh laugh
At your lives

Windows covered with bars
Fences spiked with barbed wire
Never looked so helpless
Engulfed in flames

Cameras watchin' the walls
Don't forget the dogs
Now you're trapped in your prison
How you gonna get out

See the gerbil
Run run run run run run run run run
run run run run run run run run run
run run run run run run run run run
From the fire

i was in SD during 'FIRESTORM 2003!'.

It got pretty scary, as I watched a blaze grow about 10 miles away from my condo.

On the flipside, the sunsets were fantastic and the surf was epic to say the least for the last week of October.
Werbal, I'll look into that song. If it's anything like California Uber Alles. I'll definately have a good time with it.

Hunter, sounds like you were reenacting scenes from Apocalypse Now.

"We have had an unfortunate situation that we've had three things come together: very dry areas, very hot weather and then a lot of wind," Schwarzenegger said. "And so this makes the perfect storm for a fire."

He wasn't even in that movie!
Closest the Irvine fires made it to me was five miles. The ash and smoke were unbelievable. Despite the tenseness of the situation, I was always on hand to supply Mordor jokes.

I'll see your Dead Kennedy song and raise you with Bad Religion's "Los Angeles is burning".

We get our share of fires here in Florida.....But nothing on the scale as to what i've watched on the news this week....You guys out there be careful.

Im in San Bern. Valley and to the East...you can't see an inch of blue in the sky. Air feels more congested too. Let's hope they can put them out soon.
The air quality out here is nasty. You hear talk of a "blue moon", but last night when you looked out at the sky, you saw a "brown moon".

It was like a giant asshole in the sky, and just as gross looking.

I mean EL Nino.

We get very bad weather once every hundred years. The last one was 1861-62 "Nochian" flood in California. There have been stories that it was a hurricane.

I just went outside for food. Not only is it hot and dry. It smells like a lumber yard outside.
I have two inches of ash on my third floor balcony. Yipes.

Much of the power went out in my neighborhood last night....except for my street. People were outside trying to get their garages open manually, sharing candles, or just looking about confusedly. It had a real "Monsters on Maple Street" vibe. I felt guilty for my conspicuous consumption of suddenly scarce electrons, but I had to see how Season Two of The Wire ends.

I pointed and laughed at some moron using the car wash facilities here at the business park. I guarantee it will look just as filthy tomorrow.

The sky is brown. I feel like I live in Mexico City. I wonder how long it will be before I can exercise outside and not feel like I've taken up smoking again.

I know exactly what you mean. I have an overwhelming urge to start slinking through the streets armed wiith a fiber optic scope equipped SCAR-H, and a mission objective of rescuing the Mexican president and/or tracking down Irena Morales.

So, they finally open some roads in Malibu so I'm able to get to the office, then some dipshit has to go and get themselves killed in a car accident and now the roads are all closed up again. I had to run an errand and it took me an hour to get somewhere that should have taken 20 minutes. Gotta wonder about the person who died though. Would he/she normally have been taking Malibu Canyon if it hadn't been closed? If so, does it mean the fire kinda killed him/her?

A trucker who couldn't use the regular route due to the fire illegally used a different roadway. He couldn't stop in time and plowed into two other vehicles, killing himself and the occupant of one of the other vehicles.

I've always hated truck drivers. Ever since Duel.

And they have a run off at Kanan full of sand filled trash cans if you can't stop, so this guy is even a bigger moron.

Look on the bright side. Even burnt to the ground, Irvine will still look nicer than Detroit.
