Netflix Would Like to Recommend

So I was checking my Netflix account and they always have the

"Because you Enjoyed: Random Movie

We Think You'll Enjoy: Random Movie"

section in the middle of the home screen.

Well mine today says that since I enjoyed Lewis Black: Black on Broadway that they feel I would enjoy Pink Floyd: Pulse.

Anyone else get seemingly incongruous recommendations? I say seemingly because I am sure there must be some reason they feel I would enjoy a stoner laser light show because of my predilection for angry political humor. I'm just not sure what that reason would be.

I've rated thousands of movies on Netflix and I still get odd random suggestions.

The same thing with my DVR. I use SageTV and it's intelligence program, similar to Tivo's Recommend thing, chooses the most random crap to record.

the system is probably just based on exclusions -- a bunch of other people rated lewis black and pulse and since you DIDN'T rate pulse, then you haven't seen it and might like it.

I found that the more things I rated, the more desperate (and disparate) the suggestions got.

plus, didn't lewis black do a joke about pot once? i'm sure he did....

Funny, I was actually thinking of starting a similar thread. Here's the thing: I love horror movies. I've rated hundreds of them for Netflix. I'd say that approximately 50% of my rentals are horror-related. So, guess how many horror recommendations I have? A whopping one (The second disc of the Dawn of the Dead SE that came out a couple of years ago). This makes no sense whatsoever.

I have had some weird WTF moments with the recommended movies on Netflix. Just last night, I logged on to see what was next in my queue, and staring me in the face was the Gabriel Iglesias comedy special that I was planning on adding. Netflix needs to get the hell out of my mind...

"Because you Enjoyed: White Chicks

We Think You'll Enjoy: Anal Sex from your Father"

If it helps, Pulse is great if you're a floyd fan. I still haven't seen the DVD (just the VHS). Is it possible that the comparison "engine" is associating live acts with colors in their names, Lewis Black and Pink Floyd?

This seems like as good a place as any to mention something that's been cracking me up for a while: Blockbuster Online's "African-American Classics" collection.

What does Blockbuster consider African American classics? Bowfinger, Beauty Shop, Spawn 2 AND 3, Da Hip hop Witch, Fat Albert, Passenger 57, House Party 3, White Chicks, The Cheetah Girls, Gothika, Daddy Day Care, and, I shit you not, Insane Clown Posse: Big Money Hustla$ - The Movie.

Wait, wait...there was a sequel AND a threequel to Spawn? What kind of godless world do we live in?

"But you like the horsies! You a liar!"
"Oh TiVO, thank god you don't have retard strength."

Direct to HBO animated sequels. Another two examples of great African-American art.

Yet the original gets no love. Odd that.

Damn, Patrick, why not get the face paint and represent Tha Dark Lotus. Speaking of which, I've heard that the Insane Clown Posse have made many movies.*shudder* Patrick, I regretfully have seen this due to some juggalo acqaintances I've had in the past, and it is bizarre, to say the least. Magic Ninjas and one of the "clowns" fucking as fat girl was enough to make me gag. The only thing half funny in this supposed comedy was an appearnace by Johnny Brennan from The Jerky Boys.

On the subject of Black Cinema, where is Tangerine Candy Man, Black Caesar, Blacula, Cotton Comes to Harlem, Coffy, or Im Gonna Git You Sucka.
No Malcolm X, School Daze, DTRT, Menace II Society, Dead Presidents...or Soul Plane???!!!

You better be glad you put that ellipses before Soul Plane.

My favorite is when Netflix will throw in a completely random "Because You Enjoyed" in its recommendations list. When I logged in today, it was two horror movies and "Stephen Sondheim: A Tribute at Carnegie Hall." Which led to an Elaine Stritch special being recommended alongside "Night of the Living Dead."

Based on my interest in:

American Psycho, High School Musical, The L Word

Netlix feels I would enjoy A Clockwork Orange. Now the last two listed above were my wife's picks even though ACO seems to be a good pick based off those three discs.
