Mainstream Yet Sadistic Country Songs

I accidentally stumbled upon this very special gem:

That's harsh, Joe Nichols. But still, the video made me think of this trend -- how a ton of mainstream country songs have really depressing subject matter. We've talked about this elsewhere, but what are some of the gems that are really push their luck? Keep in mind that these are songs that aren't necessarily good, but just cross that line from "heart-tugging" to "mean."

And I had so much respect for you.

"The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia"

Anything by George Jones, especially "The Grand Tour", where a sadsack shows you around his house, where his wife used to love him and treat him awesome, but "now she's gone forever", etc. It sounds like a typical "my wife left me" tale, then in the last couple lines, as he points out the nursery, he drops the bomb that she died during childbirth. Awesome song.

Also try "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me", and "I'll Be Over You When the Grass Is Over Me" - ol' George is so emo.

I contend that Billy Currington's "Good Directions" is actually about a family of inbred hillbillies who lure young women into their trap and kill them, HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES style.

George Jones - "He Stopped Loving Her Today"

The whole song sounds like its about someone who got a divorce and is finally getting over it, then it turns out the only reason he stopped loving her was that he died. Pretty awesome song.

"Goodbye Earl". But let's face it, the bastard needed killin'.

"Ode to Billy Joe".

George Jones is indeed the M. Night Shyamalan of country music.

Funny, I had the same read.

Country has a knack for these songs, and they're often really effective at just making you go "oh, damn!"

Got one: Carrie Underwood's Just a Dream

Holy crap, it's ridiculous the twist this song takes about 45 seconds in.

Cash's Deila is the darkest song I know of.

"Hard to see her suffer, but with the second shot she died."

The early-'90s chestnut "Daddy's Hands" by Holly Dunn always stuck in my mind for its combination of cloying sentiment and an unsettling rationalization of child abuse (possibly even more than one kind, depending on your reading).

"Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin'/Daddy's hands were hard as steel when I'd done wrong/Daddy's hands weren't always gentle/But I've come to understand/There was always love in Daddy's hands."

"I Got Over You (By Getting Under Her)"

Great tune...
