Philly - Fattest, Ugliest

Congrats, my brothers!

Quote:
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Philadelphia is home to the least attractive people in the United States, a survey of visitors and residents showed on Friday.

The city of more than 1.5 million people was also found to be among the least stylish, least active, least friendly and least worldly, according to the "America's Favorite Cities" survey by Travel & Leisure magazine and CNN Headline News.

About 60,000 people responded to the online survey -- at www.travelandleisure.com -- which ranked 25 cities in categories including shopping, food, culture, and cityscape, said Amy Farley, senior editor at the magazine.

For unattractiveness, Philadelphia just beat out Washington DC and Dallas/Fort Worth for the bottom spot. Miami and San Diego are home to the most attractive people, the poll found.

But Farley pointed out the results don't mean people in Philadelphia are ugly or the city is a bad place to visit.

"We were asking people to vote on attractiveness, not unattractiveness. Travel & Leisure editors believe there are a lot of attractive people in Philadelphia," she said.

"The relative attractiveness of its residents is only a minuscule factor in evaluating a city's merit."

Philadelphians' self-esteem has been undermined by national surveys showing they are among the fattest people in the United States. The American Obesity Association ranked the city in the top 10 for overweight people every year between 2000 and 2005.

And sporting pride in a city known for the fierce loyalty of its fans has been hurt by not having had a national champion in any of its four main sports since the 76ers won the National Basketball Association title in 1983.

Funny that DC is second-to-last. This city is totally feast-or-famine, home to some of the most, and least, attractive people I've ever seen. We must come in at the bottom on volume.

I think it's amusing that Minneapolis/St. Paul is listed as the 3rd nicest city. Apparently the tourists doing the ranking aren't familiar with the concept of Minnesota nice, the secret weapon of Midwesterners everywhere.
Gotta love the Minnesota nice thing.
It's a win-win situation, really - the visitor gets to feel as if those nice Midwestern folk are so friendly and helpful, while the nice Midwestern folk get to mock the life out of the down-home-sweetness-seeking tourist when his/her back is turned. Then we all get drunk and build character by freezing our asses off.

Okay fattest I kind of see how that can be tracked. But ugliest? How is that exactly judged?

Now I wanna live in Philly, just so I can move up from a 4 to a 6.

I dunno, Tom Bradley didn't look good in his later years.

Nor did Archie Bunker-esque mayor Sam Yorty either:

However, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky wears a 'stach very well

Well, cheesesteaks don't sound all that good for you and I think, like, you know, that's the only food they have there, right?

Nice 'stach. I'd vote for him.

Six violent deaths in 8 hours - a new personal best! Go Philly!

Quote:
Violence in Philadelphia last night left five dead and an armed man wounded in a span of eight hours. Another death in a West Philadelphia hobo camp is under investigation as a possible homicide.

The first death was reported shortly before 6 p.m. in Northwest Philadelphia and ended at 1:15 a.m. in West Philadelphia. The victims were four men and two women, four died by gunfire, two from stabbings.

As dusk began to fall around 5:30 yesterday, two armed men approached a car in Northwest Philadelphia and assassinated a 21-year-old man. Marvin Hudson was in the driver's seat of a green Buick parked on the 7800 block of Temple Road. Hudson was hit several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. There were three passengers in the car who escaped the gunfire on foot. Police do not have a motive.

Police in West Philadelphia found the body of a 29-year-old woman who had been stabbed multiple times in a third floor apartment on the 3800 block of Cambridge Street. Josephine Faust was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:40 p.m., police said. Investigators believe Faust may have known her killer and were looking for a "person of interest."

At 7:51, police were called to the 4800 block of Frankford Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived they found Michelle Hicks, 36, lying outside on the street bleeding from multiple stab wounds to her torso. Hicks was rushed to Frankford Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Detectives arrested her boyfriend, Richard Smith, 26, and charged with her slaying, police said.

At 8:15, three narcotics officers spotted an armed robbery in progress near 53rd and Ludlow Streets in West Philadelphia. The stick-up man brandished a 9mm handgun. The three officers all opened fire on the gunman. The robber was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

At 10:30 p.m., a man's body was found at a makeshift campsite in Southwest Philadelphia. The body, which had begun to decompose, was spotted 30 feet from the road on 8100 block of Mario Lanza Boulevard. Police believe the man was white and in his mid-60s. There did not appear to be any visible signs of trauma. An autopsy is pending, police said.

Shortly after midnight, a shooting in South Philadelphia claimed the life of another man. Police found Kenneth Henderson, 19, on the 1600 block of S. 23rd Street dead of multiple gun shot wounds. Police have no suspects and no motive in the killing.

At 1:15 a.m., police were called to the 500 block of N. 35th Street in West Philadelphia. Ronald Saunders, 20, had been shot in the neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Twin gay porn stars Taleon and Keyontyli Goffney were just arrested in Philly on suspicion of committing over 35 after-hours store burglaries.

Apparently it's true that gay porn pays worst of all the porns. Stephen Geoffreys could not be reached for comment.

BTW: Philly had more murders last year than New York last year.

Philly keeps on Phuckin' up:

I-95 in Philadelphia to Close

Quote:
A smaller crack, about a half-inch wide, was first noticed by an inspector last fall. The same inspector happened to be in the area Monday and decided to check on the support, Blaum said.

"This crack has grown considerably since October," Blaum said. "It was very fortuitous that he took that look today."

This is God's way of telling people to stay the fuck away from Philly. Listen people, listen! Hopefully they just turn around and don't head west or else they may go to Detroit instead.

They've got good food though. And their airport's nice. But those people aren't the easiest on the eyes come to think of it.

What was He saying when Minneapolis/St. Paul's bridge collapsed?

It was caught before anything bad happened, generally that's a good thing, right? I'm note sure exactly how this reflects badly on Philadelphia.

I dunno, when you're city's great strength is that it acknowledges its infrastructure is crumbling, it seems like you're in a bad spot. Then again, I guess it beats the alternative.

The bad thing is that the inspectors saw the crack months ago, and are now patting themselves on the back for "happening by it in time" this week. I drive over that goddamn thing every day.

On the news this morning they were interviewing the foreman who has been overseeing the repairs. He's congratulating his crew for working around the clock and talking like their 9/11 heroes or something. All I could hear in my mind was Chris Rock shouting- "Your supposed to fix this shit! Whadda you want, a cookie?!"

Half of all Philadelphia high school students drop out. Illadelph!

Why are we letting 17 year olds make this decision? I was a shithead at 17, and even I knew you don't drop out of high school.

(75% of Detroit's students drop out.)

Where did you go? You have to go to Los Catrines/Tequila's on 16th and Locust. It's really very good. Run by good people, with a menu that reads as if a really stoned guy wrote it.

We went to the Mexican Post because I wanted burritos, plentiful chips, and margaritas. I'm from AZ, so I know nothing is going to be really great east of Texas, but this stuff was awful. They even fucked up the margaritas.

That place you recommended sounds interesting, but it seems more upscale. It's hard for me to think of mexican food as upscale...like imagine a pizza joint with that kind of vibe, and I think you'll see what I mean. Yeah, there are upscale pizza joints, but the really good pizza is often in hole in the walls, and very plentiful out here, so why go upscale? That's how I see mexican food.

Well, you see where that got you. Be wary of any place where your dish comes out 90 seconds after you order it.

Hole in the wall Mexican works on the west coast, maybe in New York, but not Philly. And your analogy only works if we're talking one dish. Pizza's pizza, but a great Italian restaurant is something else entirely. Ditto for Los Catrines.

Dressed as Muslim women, group of men rob bank, kill cop.

The media exploitation isn't quite as deplorable as the last time a cop was killed, but it's still pretty bad.

Philly tour guides challenge city licensing law

By Joseph A. Gambardello

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Visitors to Philadelphia have a right to expect that tour guides in the Cradle of Liberty know their geography and history.

But should government have the power to regulate those guides and fine them if they are not licensed?

That question is at the center of a federal lawsuit filed today that seeks to knock down a new city tour-guide licensing law.

Brought by three guides with the backing of some tour operators, the suit argues the law, which takes effect Oct. 13 and imposes fines of up to $300, violates tour guides' First Amendment free speech rights.

In other words, it is an unconstitutional law in the birthplace of the Constitution.

"The Constitution protects your right to talk for a living, whether you're a journalist, a stand-up comedian or a tour guide," said Robert J. McNamara, a staff attorney with the Institute for Justice, a Virginia-based libertarian organization that is representing the plaintiffs.

"You cannot punish people for unauthorized talking," he said.

Number 2 with a bullet!

Quote:
Continuing a long-running downward trend, Philadelphia lost more residents between 2000 and 2007 than any U.S. city except hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, newly released estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show.

Population in the city decreased from 1,517,550 to 1,449,634 in the seven years, a loss of nearly 68,000 people, according to Greg Harper, a demographer for the bureau.

That drop of 4.5 percent represents the largest percentage loss in population of a top-25 U.S. city between 2000 and 2007, figures show.

That's an hour outside, but didn't know where else to post it. Wife asked me if I wanted to go; I don't need to see Savini speak to a crowd of geeks maybe ever again, but might be fun to see Black Lagoon in an old-timey movie house.

And there will be hardcore McQueen fans, who are going out of fanatacism for Steve McQueen. That might be interesting.
