We want our famous author's corpse! It's on, Baltimore!

Quote:
Philadelphians want Poe's body back. Last year Edward Pettit, a Poe scholar in Philadelphia, began arguing that the writer's remains belong in his own city. Poe created many of his most noteworthy works there, argues Pettit. “So, Philadelphians, let’s hop in our cars, drive down I-95 and appropriate a body from a certain Baltimore cemetery,” he wrote in a recent newspaper article. “I’ll bring the shovel.” But Baltimore says no way. "Philadelphia can keep its broken bell and its cheese steak, but Poe's body isn’t going anywhere,” said Jeff Jerome, the curator of the Poe House in Baltimore and a participant in an upcoming debate.

Oh, Philly, with so many fresh corpses being produced daily on your streets, do you really need to import a moldy, old one?

This thread is making me home sick. Or maybe just sick.

The year ROCKY BALBOA and INVINCIBLE (2 inspirational sports stories from Philly) came out, I was really feeling the pull. I live in Orlando now. You'd think the ugliness and crime would make me feel at home. Must be the lack of row homes down here.

FACT: Philadelphia has more row homes (more than 300,000 in almost every possible shape and size) than any other city in the United States.

According to a yahoo story I saw yesterday, Philly topped the Ugly List for the second year running. Kudos, uggos.

Darkmite, the tour guides are suing the city for the right to NOT be licensed. It's retarded on top of fat and ugly.

Funny.

I went to one of the Dodgers-Phillies games with one of my friends who is originally from Philadelphia. After his first visit, he wouldn't go back to the bathrooms in Dodgers Stadium because he said pretty much everyone there was either trying to pick a fight with him or intentionally bumping him as he was trying to take a piss.

I commented that I'm always embarrased by fans of my team that act like this, and he responded that this was a walk in the park compared to how I would have been treated if we were in his ballpark. Guess he was right.

Since Philadelphia has new stadiums. Do they still have the courtroom they had under Veterans Stadium for out of control fans?

Nah, they (try to) promote a "Family Atmosphere" at the new ballpark. Lincoln Financial Field (home of the Eagles) has a modern jail beneath it, though.

The worst part is, the Phils won and that shit still happened. I can almost understand it if the Phils lost, but dumping a beer on a 9 yr old Rays fan when your team is winning just makes it even more fucked up.

Don't forget the rioting. Why a riot without looting is like a day without sunshine.

I don't get it... I was at the playoff game in '93, when the Phillies beat the Braves to go to the Series, and the City of Brotherly Love was on pretty good behavior* (from my POV). Course, the team itself was filled with some of the skuzziest skuz-bums this side of the "snobs VS slobs" legacy (Dykstra, Kruk, Daulton, Wild Thing, etc). Mullets, beer guts, spitting... The crowd couldn't follow that act.

Personally, I blame all the bad behavior on this guy's** influence:

* The hometeam crowd did spend most of the game using the Braves' "chop" against them. And me and my buddies started the biggest "wave" I've ever seen, each of us wearing a white T with a red letter (spelling "PHILLIES"). We locked arms and circled round and round the stadium, getting people off their asses. I'm not even a sports nut, but it was easy to get wrapped up in the fervor.

** The one on the left. See, he's sucking out the President's brain.

Fan Watch: Broad and Walnut under control

At 1:20 a.m., police with batons and riot gear began lining the sidewalks and steadily moving the crowd off Broad Street. The resistance seems to have subsided, the fires are out. A couple of cars have been overturned, and Broad Street is littered with glass, newspaper boxes, planters and collapsed bus shelters. About 100 officers were visible on the streets, most in riot gear. The police beat a few people down with batons, but there were no mass arrests.

The police had arrived in a Philadelphia School District bus that the crowd tried to tip over, but the police were able to hold them off. The police were also guarding the Robinson Luggage outlet that had been lootyed earlier in the night.

The intersection with Chestnut Street was the last one cleared. The police were forcing their way through the intersection, where about 200 people remained. They began throwing bottles and cursing at the police.

I find it telling the the most damage was done nearest the transportation hub which leads to NJ and the suburbs. The huge crowds the gathered in South Philly produced no remainder but as soon as I hit Broad and Walnut you could see damage.

You mean to tell me that there wasn't a single fire set in NYC or Boston when the Yankees won in the 90's and the Red Sox in 2004? or when the Baltimore Ravens won a few years ago?

I find that hard to believe. Btw: most of the "rioting" are suburban white guys who don't live in the city.

Besides, detroit has the worse celebration crowds in Amercia. And watch what will happen in Dallas when the Cowboys win in a few years.

They riot all the time in Boston, even though I think they've calmed down since the Sox have started winning consistently. My friend was at Northeastern in 04' and had plenty of interesting stories or rioting/looting.

I watched from a distance for about an hour. I don't follow such things, so maybe it's the norm, but piling them all into the back of a few trucks seemed a bit anti-climactic.

Mayor Nutter announced that the city has to cut $100 million from the current city spending. He has opted to not make outright cuts but instead cutback on certain programs and areas.

Here are some of the cuts:

* Fewer trucks at some firehouses
* Closure of 11 free library branches
* The elimination of the DARE (drug and alcohol resistance) and GREAT (gang resistance training) programs
* Closure of city curfew centers
* No snow removal unless 12 inches fall
* Closure of the 92nd Police district serving Fairmount Park
* 62 of 73 outdoor city pools won't open next summer
* No more residential street cleaning and leave (sic) removal
* Freeze on tax reductions
* three city ice rinks will be closed this winter
* An end to bulk trash pickup including large appliances like refrigerators
post #83 of 180
No snow removal unless a foot falls?!? What the hell? I've seen Philly paralyzed by a few measly inches of wet snow. This should be glorious.

Also, you know what's a great way to reduce violent crime in Killadelphia? Not closing curfew centers and not reducing educational alternatives like the DARE and GREAT programs. Good stuff.

Well, they didn't do anything anyway, so good riddance. DARE isn't an educational alternative, it's required. And it sucks.

The rest, well, hopefully we won't get more than 1 big storm this winter or you guys are fucked.

Yeah, I was the valedictorian of my DARE class and was one of the larger movers of weed in Northern California by freshmen year of high school. If you're smart enough to realize half the shit they're telling you in dare is Reefer Madness level disinformation and fearmongering, then it really doesn't do much to sway you one way or the other. All the program did when I was a kid was bore the fuck out of the smart kids, scare the crap out of the dumber ones, and took away precious classroom time during which we could all have been actually learning something. I do love that the DARE program started encouraging kids to bully other kids before the schools near my home town dropped it. My little brother showed me a talking points script they were given and it was pretty much nothing a list of names to call kids making bad choices and ways to psychologically abuse your peers.

Male reporter: "Yeah, very good point."

It'd take me a while to explain what the Mummers Parade is (short version, heavyset "neighborhood" guys who all dress in glittery/gay costumes so they can "strut" drunkenly in a New Year's Day Parade), but this year while performing for the parade's judges, the captain of one of the Mummer teams was felled by a heart attack on live television.
