Updates have sporadic, and now the site's dead for me. If so, boo.

I might know of a pretty cool DVD news site...

I love DVD Active, you guys are a daily stop. Having survived a couple of dead DVD sites (including the DVD Journal), I always want to pour one out for a dead soldier - if Davis is done.

Hell, you are one of the four sites I go to weekly when working on The Special Edition's Coming Soon column.

We've had some...issues with Davis in the past apparently (I don't know the specifics), but these sites do seem to be dropping at an alarming rate lately.

Edit- Meaning I harbored them no ill will and am sorry to see them go. Just re-read that and it looked fishy.

Davis was a great BS-free site. All info, no clutter.

That's cool because The Special Edition is the first place I go to check for weekly deals.

Just curious, but what are the other three?
Bangbus, Street Blowjob, and Wikipedia.

Man, I haven't thought about Davis DVD in probably a couple of years now, but I really liked it a lot when I was a regular reader. RIP.

DVD Times, real.com and criterionco.com

Even though I of course want attention for my site, I am also a fan of DVDVerdict.com, though they don't have a lot of news, mostly reviews, but a whole lot of reviews. DVDTimes is probably the one to beat. I'd like to think we're a close second or third

I like the Bits as well, but most of the old time sites aren't hitting you with new release info on a daily. Which is half the reason I go to DVD sites to begin with.

The word on the grapevine is that Davis' owner got sick and the domain expired. Maybe he'll get better and it will still come back.

Yeah, I heard of a site called CHUD that has a whole ton of reviews as well. (:

Well that goes without saying, of course.
I'm also a big fan of DVDManiacs.net, because they review all that underground stuff.

Wow. That site is great based on the off the wall movie reviews. I'd never heard of it before now.
Yeah, that's how I got the idea to contact xploitedcinema.com about sponsoring some of my reviews, because the Maniacs guys do it. There aren't very many people reading them on DVDActive.com, I suppose, but it's more interesting than reviewing nothing but mainstream releases. Just yesterday I got Inglorious Bastards, Beatrice Cenci, Ark of the Sun God, and Cemetery without Crosses.

I miss the old days of DVD, when newsgroups would be riddled with thread titles like "FOX IS IN!!!!" and "DIVX SUCKS!!!" and "STAR WARS ON DVD IN 1998!!!" There was this strange excitement over every single news item or title announcement. I mean, seriously, a DVD announcement for shit like END OF DAYS or AIR FORCE ONE would make home theater buffs swoon.

There was this underground vibe, like the early days of Christianity, where DVD nerds would huddle around their computers, surfing the net all night, praying for Disney to dump DIVX, praying for THE ABYSS to be released 16:9 (still waiting on that one!), praying for Spielberg and Lucas to release something...ANYTHING on DVD. And each new announcement, no matter how minor, felt special.

Frankly, I'm amazed any DVD review/news site can stay afloat these days. But my hat's off to all of the survivors. Especially old timers like DVDFile and The Digital Bits. Those were the days.

Litmus: MEMORIES!

I was a laserdisc guy, and my college had free internet, so I would often scower the web for release info, which in my pre-net days came from what the sign said at Tower, the latest Ken Crane's catalog, or the occasional Laserviews or Laserdisc Gazette-type publications. When DVD hit, I was very very skeptical (ooh, twenty titles!), but when They Live came out, all sins were forgiven. But it took some time for LD to die (about a year and a half or so), I want to say when Criterion started doing them, it was game over.

And Davis DVD is officially toasted. Sad. But life, it goes on.
