MRSA Staph Infections

In August I was hospitalized after a cut on my face became infected. I went to the emergency room on a Saturday night, took one look from the nurse at the bloated area, and they rushed me by ambulance to another hospital where I spent 3 days loaded up on antibiotics. They told me it was a resistant staph infection, and they were able to knock it out with a pretty rigorous regimen of antibiotics.

First week of October, I began to have a small bump on my face again, and instead of waiting until it became larger I went to the emergency room again, and this time I didn't have to stay in the hospital, but they gave me more and different types of antibiotics, which I hope took care of the problem. I'm still waiting to see if another outbreak comes, and if it does, I'm taking no precautions.

Anyway, news about this strain of staph has been hitting the news recently, and now they're claiming more people have died from this bacteria this year than AIDS. I wanted to make people aware that this is out there and to make sure that if they see something infected to get to the doctor pretty damn quick. The doctors told me that if I had waited another day or two the infected area would have burst, spreading this bacteria throughout my body, and probably killing me.

Here's a helpful link: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mrsa/DS00735

Make sure you take care of yourselves. I had no idea it was this prevalent out there until I started seeing more about it on the news.

This type of infection is also common in athletes in contact sports so amateur wrestling, MMA etc. It's very dangerous because it seems like it's nothing serious until it hits the "could be deadly" phase.

Glad to hear you're doing better, Nordling. Now go finish your novel.

I've worried about this since I practice martial arts. I usually get cut more than anything else. So far I haven't gotten an infection like this.

A 12-year old kid here in NYC just died of that resistant staph infection.

I have no idea where I caught it, btw. I'm assuming I picked it up at work because I work in a public building, but I can't be sure. I don't work out and I'm not an athlete and I wasn't in the hospital before this.

If your dojo keeps their mats disinfected it should be all good. The problem comes when they use a weak disinfectant or they don't wash them well enough.

Believe it or not it's also quite common to get from weight rooms. If you have a cut on your leg and you didn't wipe the bench off after Greasy McFlopsweat just finished with it you can get infected.

Scary stuff. But it's goddamn great you're alive, Al.

Now get back to work.

If he starts breaking out in boils all over his body and we find out Josh Brolin was his doctor. We alll better get the hell out of here.

But seriously Nord, let's hope this shit gets knocked out quick and painless.

What I was thinking.

Damn "sicko" outbreak.

This why when you do get a wound to clean it will with a good disinfected. I don't care how much it hurts just keep telling yourself that pain is pleasure, and pleasure is pain(a saying I learned from a sadistic Olympic wrestling coach).

That sounds like a great story. I mean great in that horrible H.R. Giger sort of way.

Remember if anything should happen, you make sure you pass along that BBQ recipe you've been hiding from me all these years.

My brother had a staph infection in 1998 after he fell off his bike. Luckily it was the non-resistant variety but he still had to have surgery on his leg and was in hospital for the best part of a month. They told him at the time that had it been the resistant version, he'd be dead.

Jesus, Alan, that's pretty scary. Glad you're okay, be careful.

Is it a BBQ sauce recipe or a technique for good BBQ?
