07/08 MLB Offseason

Here's a good link to a list of potential free agents.

That's an awful list of free agent pitchers.

From a pure economics perspective, ARod is picking a great time to opt out. A very weak free agent class plus record revenues really puts him in a strong position.

That record revenue thing still kinda boggles my mind. I don't know anybody who likes baseball, and I know a lot of guys in the US via my job.

I'm hoping the Phils pluck either Lowell or Schilling from the Red Sox. Given their playoff run, though, I think Schilling's a far likelier pick-up. And I still don't think it will wind up happening. I hope it does, though. Schilling's always loved this town, misgivings included. And I think a move to the NL is logical at this point in his career.

I'm still waiting on who buys the Cubs, things like this happen a lot faster than this. Also, how are the White Sox going to improve if they got rid of their core?

I think the Angels are gonna make a serious play for the top tier guys. I'd even go as far as saying that A-Rod will end up there. Vladdy and A-Rod on one team... Good lord.

Alex sure seems like hes going to the west coast, with teams like the Angels and the Giants lining up for his services. Honestly though, I buy the Giants more than the Angels, looking at their team next season, they need something to draw fans to the park, you know, besides the park itself.

For the Mets, besides bringing back Ramon Castro, and signing a guy like Torrealba to split time with him, I don't see much besides picking up Alou's option and signing David Riske.

The Giants may want to fill their park but the team is shit. If Alex has any ideas for a ring he'll stay out of SF.

Also, it'll be a huge mistake if the NY Yankees don't just swallow their pride and play ball with Scott Boras. The Yankees are at a crossroads, and how they handle this off-season will determine whether or not they will remain perennial World Series contenders.

Their core is aged, their system is bereft of hitting prospects, and they've finally developed the kind of arms that have prevented them from winning another World Series.

There is no replacement for Alex Rodriguez on the free agent market, and all a trade will accomplish is destroy their future to, at best, approach the production they'll lose by letting him go. Brian Cashman has gotten a lot of unjustified flack this year, and you know what? He'll deserve it if he lets Rodriguez walk for fear of appearing weak.

They are at a crossroads and I'm incredibly nervous about the next couple of years. The pitching core is there with Joba, Phil and Kennedy, but that offense is looking VERY sparse. All that said, I'm a fan who's happy and unhappy they won't deal with Boras.

Happy in the sense that A-Rod just walked out without talking so screw him. No reason dealing with a guy that clearly doesn't wanna be here and that's fine, but we don't want you here either.

Unhappy in the sense in that there will now be a big fucking hole in the infield and the lineup. One that can't be filled. As much as I wanna say "so long!" to A-Rod, that's just impossible to say right now. As good as the Red Sox are now, we couldn't afford to lose him.

Who would replace him? Lowell will stay in Boston. Joe Crede? Beltre? Miguel Cabara, who probably couldn't handle the spotlight of NY? Jesus Lord, Wilson Betemit?

I've been shaken up as a Yank fan, no doubt. Things are crazy right now. Girardi should be a fine manager, but Torre never should've been let go in the first place. They had the best man for the job and now he's gonna be 3,000 miles away. Nothing you can do, but that just pisses me off to no end.
