Look!

As a young nerd, I loved Fred Hembeck's strips in Marvel Age. It's cool to see his other works collected here.

Awesome. I still fondly remember "Fred Hembeck Destroys the Marvel Universe".

That was some great stuff, I wonder if the companies would tolerate such abuse today.....

I remember one month when the main editors stepped aside & let the assistant editors take over for them, and the editor of Spiderman "allowed" Hembeck to draw an issue. partway thru the issue, the real editor supposedly gets back from his convention or whatever, sees what she's done, and puts a stop to it, with the last 3 pages of the issue being finished by the "real" artist that was "supposed" to draw that month's issue.

I don't think they changed the plotting or dialogue any to make it humorous, but it was a pretty (I presume unintentionally) silly story, and it actually benefitted from Hembeck's art depicting the silliness. Much as they goofed on the idea of hembeck drawing an entire issue, in hindsight it looks now like it may have been a stroke of genius, given the stupid nature of that particular issue.

I recall that issue. I think you're mis-remembering though - it was about how The Fly was starting to become more fly than man, and I think it would've been a solid issue if played straight. Of course, much like the score of Animal House or Robert Stack in Airplane!, context is everything, and the art made the whole thing ridiculous.

why have a parody when we have Dan DiDio Destroys The DC Universe already?

That's the one. Color me forgetful, but I just couldn't have taken the fly leaving off his heart's desire - attacking and killing J. Jonah jameson in mid pummel - to slurp a discarded banana peel. Even w/o Hembeck's art, that would have been silly.
