Short Film Recommendations

Kind of inspired by the recent Latchkey's Lament shout-outs and trying to catch old eps of On the Lot (which I didn't get to see in its initial run)...

Scouring the internet in hopes of finding that diamond in the rough short can be a frustrating endeavor. Thought this thread could act as a depot for Chewers to post their finds and recommendations (live-action or animated). Genuine shorts created by actual or aspiring film-makers, not some youtube vlog or gross-out porn.

I love the short films that Aardman and Pixar have put out over the years and get quite a kick out of Bill Plympton and Don Hertzfeldt's (seen in Spike & Mike's festival, etc) simplistic, yet scathingly funny, stuff. I love the "Work of Director..." dvd's that opened me up to the world of Chris Cunningham and others.

I'm partial to genre films and I'm a fan of the oddball stuff that Rob Schrab (Robot Bastard) and Doug TenNapel (Sock Baby) have put together. Neill Blomkamp's resume impresses me and Robin's Big Date (Sam Rockwell, Justin Long) is a hoot. The zombie shorts from Grimm Grotto Goods are worth tracking down (When Zombies Attack, and the Waker Safety film) as is Possum Death Spree. There's a few gems in TV commercial and music video form and even in the Grindhouse Trailer contest as well. I'm really looking forward to catching: Eddie Loves You and It Came From the West (puppet zombie western) based on the Creature Corner write-ups.

Speaking of CC, I did a review for a trio of shorts on the My Skin DVD back in February and my fave was indeed, "My Skin".

Still waiting to catch Madame Tutli-Putli...

Surfing through the MBs, Channel 101, ifilm (seems to be degenerating into youtube), and atomfilms.com seemed like good places to start. There's a sea of crap out there on the interweb... filtering out the garbage and finding the films out there worth the trouble is up to us. Any helpful thumbs up? What do we need to see? There needs to be a MB section for short films!

Just to throw in a few I've seen around,
How to Cope with Death is a pretty amazing animated short, and Adventure Time is great if you're into weird humor.

Also, I can't help but plug one of my own shorts, The Ugly Duckling, that I made back in the day.

I don't know if "failed" TV pilots count, but Mignola's The Amazing Screw-on Head is greatness IMO:

In this hilarious send-up of Lovecraftian horror and steampunk adventure, President Abraham Lincoln's top spy is a bodyless head known only as Screw-On Head.

When arch-fiend Emperor Zombie steals an artifact that will enable him to threaten all life on Earth, the task of stopping him is assigned to Screw-on Head. Fortunately, Screw-On Head is not alone on this perilous quest. He is aided by his multitalented manservant, Mr. Groin, and by his talking canine cohort, Mr. Dog.

Can this unorthodox trio stop Emperor Zombie in time? Does Screw-On Head have a body awesome enough to stop the horrors that have been unleashed? Where can we get a talking dog?

All these questions (O.K., maybe not that last one) are answered by the thrilling tale of The Amazing Screw-On Head!

Good to see Jasper Morello get some love. Any word on the many, many sequels they got planned there? I actually enjoyed its dark ending and am wary of continuing to story.

Could be. I thought Sci-Fi Channel was testing the waters for a series, but I could be wrong.

I'd also take a browse through the budding filmmakers forum.

This site has some collections on DVD:

Anyone know where I can find Six Shooter online?

I recommend both the 2005 and 2006 Academy Award Short Films DVDs (see here available for both rental from Netflix and purchase from Amazon.

I also recommend The Accountant, a 2001 short film that was filmed in my hometown and won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short. You can buy it directly from the filmmakers on VHS or DVD here. I have yet to show it to anyone who didn't either truly love it or enjoy the hell out of it.

Well I found Six Shooter on the iTunes store. Looks like I will have to get that one.

Hugh Le Film

Surreal and quality animation short featuring a Native American theme:

I dig the combo of the 3D and 2D. Creates a nice contrast for the purpose of the storytelling.

There was a time when the sky was too low.

A few weeks ago there was a short film festival in France. I attended a screening in a huge, packed theatre. The screening included six films and the first ones dealt with subjects like people surviving tsunami or learning to live with scars. Most of the films weren't very good but the audience gave them pretty polite applause in the end.

Then the last film begun. It was called I Love Sarah Jane. It was about young love. And zombies. And the audience went absolutely apeshit over it. Here's the trailer.

It was the Clermont-Ferrand international short film festival.

A weird mix between She Ra, Tron and Flash Gordon... ELA in Love at First Byte

ZOMBIE HUNTER (emergency broadcast plays the short)

We've talked about it a bit before on the boards, and rather than clutter up the Not Quite Hollywood thread with more discussion about it, just wanted to say how much you should all track down Treevenge if it's playing near you. One of the best shorts I've seen in years... probably since Eddie Loves You. It's from the creators of Hobo With A Shotgun and shows you the horrors of what Christmas trees go through, and what happens when they reach their breaking point.

Short clip of it's online here- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCcTGdw0FGI

And the official site so you can see where it's playing - http://www.treevenge.com/

Haha. Love the star and the final splat.

The chainsaw was what set it off! It had flashbacks of back in the day when it was taken from its family.

Not a joke.

Also, probably the tamest part of the ending massacre.

T is for TOILET

Great claymation horror short for the ABC's of Death contest.

Apparently the creator, Lee Hardcastle, has a ton of other fun stuff on his youtube channel for me to peruse.

EDIT: I think the embed feature on the thread will make viewing here easier than before. Less clicking through.
