Chicago Police Tasered 82-Year-Old Woman
Nov 6 03:21 PM US/Eastern

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago's Police Department is investigating an officer's use of a Taser last month on an 82-year-old woman who was swinging a hammer when police arrived.

Officials with the city's Department on Aging went to Lillian Fletcher's home Oct. 29 to make a welfare check, and called police when they saw Fletcher in a window swinging a hammer back and forth, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Tuesday.

Officers arrived and in an attempt to subdue Fletcher one of them used their Taser, Bond said. The department is trying to determine if the officer violated department policy regarding the use of stun guns.

Fletcher's granddaughter, Traci Taylor, told the Chicago Sun-Times that her grandmother suffers from schizophrenia and dementia.

"My grandmother is easily confused," Taylor told the newspaper, adding that the elderly woman can be belligerent but is about 5 feet 1 and no more than 160 pounds.

"I just don't think they should be Tasing 82-year-old women. That's ridiculous," Taylor said.

Police departments around the country have come under fire for the use of Tasers following several deaths.

The human rights group Amnesty International USA has voiced concerns that police departments are starting to use tasers more routinely rather than in cases of serious danger.

Taser use by police drew national attention recently when police stunned and arrested a University of Florida student after his fervent, videotaped outburst at an event with Sen. John Kerry in September.

Dear Lord, couldn't they just let the old woman tire out THEN go in and get her?

If they were afraid of injury from the woman, why didn't they just wait for SWAT?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you two have never lived in Chicago. This response was actually unseasonably mild.

Just because someone's old doesn't mean they can't fuck you up with a hammer.

Still, cops are taser-happy these days. I have a cop friend who assures me they're 100% safe. Where's he get his info? The manufacturer, of course.

Anybody who's willing to swing with MC Hammer definitely needs to be tased.

Wait, did I misread the article?

And that window had to be protected, at all costs...

They were conducting a welfare check on this woman at her home, saw her swinging a hammer and called cops, who then tased her. So now swinging a hammer in your own home is taser worthy? And I refuse to believe they couldn't have called a negotiator or a mental health specialist to calm the woman down before they went all gung-ho and tased her.

Fucking retarded.

I know I, for one, feel much safer.

All that having been said, the sick fuck in me is willing to bet it was fucking hilarious to watch.

Seriously, though, if they actually thought she was dangerous to herself or others, this was probably the best way to subdue her. Wrestling the hammer away from her would probably have been more likely to hurt her.

You people are so quick to judge the police, she could have been on her way to Comcast.

Yeah because you couldn't just let an 82 year old swing a hammer IN HER OWN HOME DOING NO ONE ANY HARM till she got tired. Either that or she had some sort of uber-stamina that the story didn't mention.

She was in her own home, yes, but what if she started breaking things? She probably would have missed that window if she had broken it, and might not have had the money to pay for having it repaired. Exposing her to the elements or theives would probably be a bad thing. And she might have broken some of her possessions in her dementia-inspired fugue, some of which would probably have been made of glass that she could have cut herself on. She might also have hit her daughter with the hmmer, when she came over to check on her: "Hi Mom! How are yo. . . ." *SMACK!* "Get outta here! You're trying to take my money! Help, Police!" If police action prevents harm, that's better than their reacting to it after it's happened, isn't it?

Edited for spelling
