There's also that news that Rachel Nichols may in fact be playing Janice Rand.

I still don't get the Karl Urban thing. Why the hell would they get him to play McCoy. Can the guy even act? Let alone act like a curmudgeon? What the heck are they doing? But I second Devin's 'I want this to work'. I do, I just can't see how with how they're casting this celluloid mutation.

You're insane. Greenwood is FANTASTIC casting.

Finally, amongst all these 90210 kiddies in space, we have an older, seasoned actor to bring a bit of gravitas. And he's not necessarily too old. The Pike we saw in The Cage was younger than the period where Kirk takes Command of the big E.

Gotta say, I love the Greenwood, but without knowing more about the movie, its pace, tone, style, etc, it's impossible to say whether the casting is appropriate or not. Still reserving judgment on this one.

I actually liked the idea of Cruise as Pike...

Years of the fan casting of Ray Liotta die in vain.

That's nothing on the massive wank for Gary Sinise for McCoy (nevermind he's waaay out of the age range).
Greenwood even kind of looks like Pike in my mind in that picture. I can deal with this casting.
It's a shame Charles Nelson Riley died..He would have made an awesome Khan! Fortunalty Chris Elliott lives!
I like the idea of Greenwood being in this, great actor, but I take Devin's point that this was their chance to cast a big name and they blew it. Still, this is one of the few news stories about this film that gets me excited.

Was there a promised Devin's Advocate on the entire casting of this film a while back or was I just imagining that?

Yes. I would've loved to read it. Hope it's not too late.
This is shaping up to be the weirdest cast ever on a big budget Hollywood film. Next week we'll hear Woody Allen is playing Worf the Klingon.
Was it intentional to not cast big names, or did the big names simply not want to boldly go where Shatner has gone before?
I think when Devin hears who has been cast as Spock's mum, he'll be ready to rip Abrams a new one. Looking forward to the Advocate.
This movie is giving me a headache.
I really, really want to see the script for this thing. I fully expect to see inserted footage of Brando as God or V'ger by now.
Well, Greenwood is certainly a good actor. He shuld be ok as Pike, not that i know anything about that character.

Winona Ryder is a good actress, but this is just stunt casting.

I tell you who should have been cast as something: the guy who played Marshall ( the q-esque tech geek) from Alias. An alien of some sort ? Screw that - why not Scotty?
Bruce Greenwood is good casting but Winona Ryder...yikes..
Winona? The only thing that can save this movie now is a Christian Slater cameo.
Good idea - Hard Harry could be the resident Enterprise DJ.

All these C-list actors are going to be really distracting.
I like these Star Trek casting picks.

James T. Kirk= Chris Pine
Spock=Leonard Nimoy
Dr McCoy=Karl Urban
Janice Rand= Rachel Nichols
Nero=Eric Bana
Uhura=Zoe Saldana
Scotty= Simon Pegg
Captain Christopher Pike= Bruce Greenwood

I have never and don't intend to watch Heroes, so I havent seen Zach Quinto act. I hope J.J. Abrams hits a home run with Star Trek.

Err, thanks for letting us know, Duke.

Off topic: Duke, where do you live and how old are you ?

He lives in our hearts and is ageless.

Neither have those of us who watch Heroes.
Wouldn't Urban = Pike, Greenwood = McCoy, been better casting? I have to say this is really confusing me.

Well, he is rather wooden in his acting style, so he should be able to portray the very matter-of-fact manner of Spock easily.

Also, Fathom Events will be presenting the HD version of the original series Season One 2-parter, The Menagerie (Episodes 11 and 12) next Tuesday (11/13) and Thursday (11/15) in select theaters both the U.S. and Canada. More info on that here.

You're on to something there.

I just hope next season on ENTOURAGE, Johnny Drama blows his brains out because he couldn't land a role in this.

What about the original cast inspires such reverence?
DDay, I have posted my age before. If Dick Clark was still on radio his top 40 would be my age. Did you want me to say my age clearly? I have on other threads, on this one, this is as clear as Crystal Lake as I will get.

Where do I live? Obviously, I live in my home, in the area of NYC.

40 years of reruns?
How about a template for science fiction and exploration which included writers whom are now Grandmasters of their genre which includes, but is not limited to Harlan Ellison among others. A series that lasted only 3 seasons, yet spun off 4 live action series, one animated, 6 original series films, 3 next generation, and one that included all of next gen and 3 of the original cast.
Yeah, but most of that was to support Rick Berman's coke habit.
I don't question the allegory and sci-fi elements, just the cast.
I love Karl Urban--(for no other reason then he played Eomer in LOTR). But as McCoy this is so obviously miscast. I can live with Greenwood since I do respect his acting. but who are these other people? I have no hope for Star Trek in this new incarnation. Of course I plan to see it so I can rip it a new one like so many other diehard Trekkers.
Chris Pine
Zachary Quinto
Karl Urban
John Cho
Zoe Saldana
Simon Pegg
Anton Yelchin
Rachel Nichols
Eric Bana
Leonard Nimoy
Winona Ryder
Bruce Greenwood

This has got to be one of the weirdest casts EVER for what is meant to be a blockbuster film. Especially one that is rebooting (in theory) an already well-established franchise.
This cast almost reads like a Geek Franchise Fantasy League Draft.
Yep, Morrison was confirmed within the last few days as some spy shots of her on set popped up on IESB.

Also, anyone seen this yet?

If you have to ask, no answer will satisfy.

Jennifer Morrison is "most excellent" ?

Dude. That's like, totally rad.
With everyone and their brother getting parts, I'm perplexed and a bit annoyed that Abrams can't throw the Shat a bone and give him a cameo.

A great ending to the film would be Spock looking over what he's done to make sure everything is back on track only to discover his old friend alive and well.

If Shat don't show, then the next best thing at the end would be to keep the camera on Nimoy's Spock and show his reaction to seeing an off camera Shatner Kirk.
I think the he's gonna be in it. All the "quotes" from him about how dissapointed he is over not being in the movie are too over the top even for Shatner. Which makes me think it's just his way of saying he's in the movie without saying it. Then again...maybe i'm just reading too much into it.
That first pic looks like a Vulcan Jack Bauer.
I will admit, he does look a lot like Spock. Whether it's good make-up, costume, whatever, they nailed that stoic, slightly dour look that made Spock lovable.

Word 'round the campfire (read: Trekkie fansites) says that Ms. Morrison is apparently playing the young Carol Marcus.

Which makes a rough sorta sense...all Kirk has to do is exhale for five seconds, and she's knocked up. Check off another box on the geek-continuity-list.

Now where the hell's Gary Mitchell?

I think so too. When this was first announced, Abrams and Nimoy both said they are working to find the Shat a role. I hope it's just a clever slight of hand.

Maybe in the past, Old Spock sees Baby Soran playing on a bridge over a large chasm and gives him a little nudge. As Baby Soran falls to his death, Old Spock will arch his eyebrow and flatly quip, "Ironic." Old Spock will then return to the future and find Old Kirk baking muffins in his log cabin, as history intended.
