Friday the 13th Director Confirmed?

I saw this on Bloody-Disgusting a few minutes ago (sorry for the rival plug, looked for it on Creature-Corner before I posted). Apparently, Platinum Dunes is going back to their surest thing, Marcus Nispel, to do the new Friday. He did well for them with the not horrible but not all that interesting TCM remake, so I guess this makes sense. This is probably a better choice than that guy who directed the prequel to said remake, but I still have a feeling it's just gonna be more of the same...a few famous faces, lacking in mood, Michael Bay lighting. At least things are moving forward, for better or worse.

im perfectly alright with nispel taking the helm.

Didn't Devin get pissed the last time someone put up news on the boards and didn't submit it (the whole Rob Zombie C.H.U.D. thing)? I'd do yourself a favor and submit this, Gary. Though that calls into question why I don't just submit it.

Nispel's TCM was hilariously bad. Only good things were Biel and the photography.

Without Biel (and SJR), i have no interest in this at all. There's no way they'll keep the tongue-in-cheek tone (that kept the series watchable), so...

Have you seen the original Friday the 13th? It takes itself very seriously... which is one of the reasons it's an awful, awful, awful movie.

The redeemable qualities I can still see in the original Friday the 13th were the special effects. But then again, I love Tom Savini. I know they've come a long way since then, but the first time I saw that "Kevin Bacon gets an arrow through the throat" sequence, I thought it was a really well-executed effect.

It's one of those things I can't really see fit to get upset about remaking. I'm a casual fan of the series, even though I can acknowledge that at their worst they cause cancer and at their best the Friday films are "so-so." I'm irritated at the glut of remakes, but at this point the series has so much jumbled continuity and has gone on for so long that a reboot might be their only option.

p.s. I wrote in to the site about this (besides, it's all over the net by now), so please don't spank me. I'm sure Devin will have something to say soon, since he's the resident Friday buff.

i do think it will be cool to see Jason filmed in the same style as the TCM remake. It's better than no Jason movie at all I guess.

I hated that Michael Bay style of the TCM remake, just totally lost what the original's low budget charm was. I'd rather see a new Friday movie... not some re-hash of the original. When will these remakes end. What's up next remaking "A Nightmare On Elm St."

Umm, no offense, but no one has any room to criticize this film for being a rehash of the original film. Why? Because Friday The 13th Parts 2-8 are pretty much nothing but rehashes of the original, with only minor changes here and there in terms of characters and locations.

Besides, this film sounds more like a standalone sequel (with slight nods to the franchise background) than a remake. We apparently start the film with Jason already a notorious legend and slaying teens in the camp. Doesn't sound like much of a remake to me. More like a sequel that doesn't rely too much on previous installments to tell it's tale. Hell, it sounds like you could easily view it as taking place after Freddy vs. Jason.

EDIT - As for A Nightmare On Elm Street being remade? I doubt it will happen anytime soon. Word is that New Line is kickstarting Freddy vs. Jason II out of development hell again as a potential follow-up project to this film. The real question is, will we ever get a solo Freddy Krueger film again? Personally, I think they'd be crazy not to make another standalone ANOES movie and I can't see it not doing well. Granted the franchise ran out of steam in the early '90s, but that's only because they cranked out too many sequels back-to-back in the '80s to the point where people got tired of it. Seems like interest has greatly renewed since then, as merchandise for the characters is selling well...................as are the now-defunct Black Image books and the ongoing comics. FVSJ got interest jumpstarted again and it absolutely boggles my mind that New Line has waited this long to start cashing in on it with more films.

the tcm remake had a gritty visual style to it that I think will be an interesting context for a character we got used to. Most of the friday films all look the same. I was just saying that it is exciting to see a character i love in a new visual context. I dont know if the movie will be good. but most of the friday films kind of suck even though I love them all. they cant fuck it up. even if it sucks, it will still be cool to get a new jason movie where he isnt in space. For the record, I like Jason X.

and I'm fucking sick of listening to people bitch about remakes.
As for "the low budget charm." Give me a break. You sound like one of those people who describes poor communities as "quaint." Enjoy your lobster, pal. The original TCM has a lot more going for it than low-budget charm. Its got Franklin and he's my boy! There is a lot of potential from a visual standpoint for this Friday remake.

I think you took my comment the wrong way, I LOVE the original TCM and am a huge horror fan, I didn't mean it in a "oh that's a cute little movie those guys made" way. I mean it's that low budget quality that makes the movie so frightening and Michael Bay's slick big budget look completely loses what made the original so creepy. I mean this isn't ConAir or The Rock, this is TCM and I thought it just looked so damn good that it lost that scary appeal of the first flick. Also the "invalid brother Franklin" kicks ass. I abosultely love his appearance in TCM2... his skeleton form that is still clutching the flashlight.
