Bet you can't say that five times fast!

A West Midlands family is playing a central role in the quest to raise the profile of a forgotten British dish - faggots.

The Doody family from Wolverhampton has been crowned The Faggot Family in a national competition, and to kick off their reign they will launch National Faggot Week.

"The nation knows that the Cornish pasty, Yorkshire pudding, haggis and fish and chips are great British dishes, but all too often the faggot is left off that list," said Janet Doody.

Her husband Fred added: "It's unfair because faggots were a British delicacy long before any of the others.

"The great British faggot is full of flavour and a great belly warmer at this time of year."

The competition was organised by faggot producer Mr Brain's Faggots.

Faggot Facts:

- Faggots were called "savoury ducks" in the Middle Ages

- Faggots are now made from pork liver and pork
I'm such a child for giggling throughout that whole article.

Edit: I'm gonna get SO much neg rep...

hehehehehehehehehehe

They do realize how funny this sounds, right? Right?

Right? I know that using "faggot" to refer to a gay man is an American thing, but we need one of our Brits in here right now to explain why they're choosing to ignore this, thereby leading to a situation in which a 13-year-old boy is being made to wear a bright yellow sash that proclaims him a faggot.

Wait.. so a fag is a cigarette, and a faggot is some kind of food.. just how exactly did American's adopt those words as negative connotations for gay guys?

I mean queer I understand.. odd and unusual. But faggot?

ETA: Nevermind, I learned myself something!

faggot (1)

1279, "bundle of twigs bound up," from O.Fr. fagot "bundle of sticks," from It. faggotto, dim. of V.L. *facus, from L. fascis "bundle of wood" (see fasces). Esp. used for burning heretics (a sense attested from 1555), so that phrase fire and faggot was used to mean "punishment of a heretic." Heretics who recanted were required to wear an embroidered figure of a faggot on their sleeve, as an emblem and reminder of what they deserved.

Those damn limp-wristed, lisp-talkin bundles of wood!

I had no idea that in Britain the Doody's pack in the faggots.

I'm not sure what *that* was supposed to mean, but I find myself laughing regardless.

Now get off my lawn, you little faggots.

Careful, they tend to congregate in large numbers.

So what you're saying is that all along, rednecks have been calling homosexuals "fascists" and they didn't even know it.

I'm still trying to add to the conversation, but the 13 year old kid inside me won't stop giggling.

I found the "savoury ducks" line curious since here in Puerto Rico the common slang term for homosexuals is "pato", which also means "duck" in Spanish. I have no idea where THAT came from, though. In context, "pato" is our equivalent of "gay" while "maricón" is the equivalent of "faggot" (stronger and more weight).

So, you guys call yer gays "fascists" and we call ours "ducks".

And the Brits, I guess, just eat them.

The family, including Lewis, 13, and Grace, 7, eat faggots twice a week, with mashed potato and mushy peas...
