Since I've moved to CA, and in SF and LA specifically, I've met several people who were involved in the adult industries, and my anecdotally based explanation for the different types of women performers are these: 1) Yes, they were abused at a young age and 'relate to men as sexual' is deeply rooted in their heads - these types are the easiest to spot because they are typically addicts of some sort and are like 'featured on COPS' crazy 2) They are really really stupid and hot. Seriously. They don't think deeply about any sort of moral dilemma's that may occur with your avg. person, AND they have lots of sleazy dudes trying to convince them to participate in a sleazy lifestyle. They are easy to persuade. 3) They like it. They just like sex, they think it's fun and they have that crazy 'free-spirit' thing going on that you find in abundance at Burning Man or Comic Con. They like the whole 'sexual energy' thing, and are kind of hippies in that way.

For the record - after living in LA, I'd say that there are just as many if not more 'Hollywood' actors who were abused as children and need the attention.

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned Ginger Lynn yet. Back in the early 80s, there was nobody prettier or more...versatile. She had a stunning, all natural body and a gorgeous face. If memory serves, she was also one of the few porn actresses to do anal scenes before they became mandatory (like in today's movies). Re: porn actresses then and now, remember, they didn't have Photoshop back in the day, and shot on film, as opposed to video and DVD today, so their appearances might not be as forgiving as what you're used to. Also, it wasn't the industry it is now - us old timers had to make due with what actresses were available. Ladies like Annette Haven, Kay Parker, Traci Lords, Colleen Brennan, Sharon Mitchell, Seka, amongst many others, were very attractive, had some curves and meat on their bones, and their looks had a degree of character that I'm not entirely convinced today's porn starlets have. Hell, they looked a lot like girls we sorta knew.

A lot of the girls nowadays look pretty much the same (big chest, skinny, blonde - far too many blondes). They are very attractive, granted, but I'd be hard pressed to tell you who's who.

Being able to identify today's porn stars i would venture to say has more to do with them being in the industry for so short a time they're unable to really establish a name for themselves. Most of the girls today are in for a few months or so before they get out and are replaced with other girls more than ready and willing to take their place.
