The Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Anyone else listen to this group? I'm listening to their "The Lost Christmas Eve" album and I'm loving it. They're playing in Toronto on the weekend. If I had money to burn I would probably go.

I liked them better as Savatage. It's too bad they had to get pigeonholed into that fucking Christmas music and change their name to get any respect while their real music gets pissed all over.

Yeah, if I hear one more person talk about how great the fucking Trans-Siberian orchestra is I'm going to deck the halls with THEM.

I enjoy the first three albums a lot. Hopefully that long delayed 5th album will break away from the Xmas stuff.

Great stuff, though obviously doesn't show their range (Savatage is super fun, as stated above). But man, do they put on a live show. Caught em up in Boston one year and holy shit, one of the best concerts of my life.

I saw them live a few years ago because I liked some of the Christmas stuff I heard on the radio. Big fucking mistake. The tickets were not cheap and they sucked.

I've seen them twice, two years apart, and it was the exact same show both times. The first set is essentially a Christmas story of sorts that really doesn't make much sense...it's essentially a framework by which to play most of their Christmas music, complete with a guy in a tuxedo spouting poetry between songs (I'm not kidding) who essentially tells the story. If you can get through that first set, you're in for a fun evening. The second set is just pure music and pyrotechnics and is MUCH better. We're planning on seeing them again once they release new material in the hopes that the first set will finally change.

As I said above, you can expect a narrator doing poetry between songs, 'explaining' the story. It's pretty grueling to listen to as all that you're doing is WAITING for the music to start. Click the link and you'll see what I mean.

I was under the impression that Savatage still worked on the off season. I haven't listened to them in years, but I remember Poets and Madman coming out the same year as a TSO tour.

Anyone who isn't following all this, this is Savatage. Awesome metal band.

If I remember correctly, Savatage is more or less dead. There's been talk of getting together for a farewell tour and a last live album, but that seems to have fizzled out. Poets and Madmen was their last album and will likely remain so. Jon Oliva put together a new band called Jon Oliva's Pain which is kind of a Savatage-Lite. I haven't listened to it much, so I can't comment too much on it.

Oliva is a sucker for the theatrics, that's for sure. I think losing his brother kind of fucked him up a bit.

So, they ARE Savatage? Okay. I always wondered. I knew I'd heard Savatage do the "Christmas, Sarajevo" song years ago, and thought it was cool, then suddenly it was credited to Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and I never looked it up on the internet, for some reason.

I heard Savatage's "In The Hall of the Mountain King" on XM 41 last night, and was pretty disappointed that it wasn't a straight adaptation of the Grieg piece, because I love that joint.

On the Hall of the Mountain King album, there's a piece called "Prelude to Madness" which is an abbreviated take on Greig's piece. The track is about 3 minutes and takes a minute to "kick in", but there you go.

Ahh, very good. Thanks for the tip!

Savatage is some good high vocal metal. Trans-Siberian can eat ass.

In a similar vein, Mannheim Steamroller was created by the guy that was responsible for "Convoy".

Well, maybe not so similar.
