No, it isn't. It's tough, it's not badass. Getting your ass kicked isn't badass, it's actually the opposite - to be a badass, you have to deliver punishment, not just receive it. Anyone can get punched out. A badass comes back and finds the fucker and doubles up the punishment that was meted on him.

Film Noir is great for many reasons, and one of them is that the protagonists (for the most part) aren't badasses. It goes against the genre to have a hero who beats the shit out of people. They're usually cool, tough, witty characters with a strong sense of will. They're not badasses, though...and that's a good thing.

But why is a badass just a thug, surely someone (as Dre pointed out) who knows all the potential plays of a situation and knows he can take anyone the fuck out, but abstains from doing so, is far more badass than some heavy.

Nah, the music is special, but it wasn't the first time. Horner was already his own favorite composer by then. The STAR TREK scores had lifts from BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS. COCOON lifted a bit from STAR TREK II. If I remember right COMMANDO recycled 48 HRS, though it's been a while since I've heard them.

So now Aliens is mediocre? That's... interesting.

Personally I think this is absolutely right. Brendan from Brick isn't a badass, he's cool.

Brendan also doesn't really fit that profile, as he basically goes 3-0 on times when he actually throws a blow. He takes beatings, but wins the fight(s).

Edit: Which actually isn't too bad of a definition, come to think of it.

Revisited the entire ALIEN quadrilogy recently, and despite all the posturing, Marine bravado, and whatnot... I find Ripley and Dillon's sacrifices in part 3 the most BADASS. Foreshadowed by their BADASS motivational speeches...

Dutton's delivery is goosebump-inducing. Hellafugginballztothewallawesome.

Dutton's performance is one of the reasons why I really like the third one. Practically everything he said and did was awesome, not the least of which being that speech. But my favorite part was his tango with the dog alien down in that pit. Thing's eating him alive and he still talks shit. "That the hardest you can bite motherfucker?!" Totally bad-ass.

Yeah, and he totally and without question takes that bold action. There's never a "what am I gonna do?" whiny conflict. There's also so much conviction and force in his line delivery. Not to mention single-handedly whooping all the would-be rapists. I could totally buy his character surviving in that prison environment and making Ripley (of all the strong-headed people) listen to him. He rocks the hell out of those horned-rim specs too. Just adds to his badassery.

I'm terribly mixed about ALIEN 3, but not an ounce of that is due to Dutton's Dillon.
