Movie Draft: Pre-Game Chatter

I'm pissing in Kirby's yard here. But, since I he'll probably blow his first draft choice, amongst other things, on Brokeback Mountain, or the Hairspray remake, I'm not worried about the repurcussions. This draft should be good. 2000 - 2007 has been a good run, domestic and foreign. So, with plenty of solid draft choices, and the odds being that most of you are going to select sci-fi crap like AI, those Hobbit movies, perverted Japanese anime, or some forgotten adaptation of Magic the Gathering — I'm pretty sure I'm going to be left holding the sweetest draft list.

I'll agree. As a pre-game, I compiled a list of my top 10 films from each year, then narrowed it down to 20, then a 10. I wound up going with my favorites, rather than best. Best would probably be a separate list, but since the big ones, like Children of Men and Eternal Sunshine and Pan's, are going to go quick, I figured it would be good to have a reserve.

But I'll agree -- this has been a pretty fantastic decade for moviegoing so far, especially since 2004.

All I can say is you fuckers had best just step away from White Chicks! It's mine!

Yeah, drafts where people select the "best" movies suck, on account of people making disingenuous choices, and peppering the drift with "critically acclaimed" shit. For instance, it would be disingenuous of me to draft Eternal Sunshine, because, while I saw it, and liked it, there's other movies I'm more into; I'd probably be drafting the movie for the sake of impressing and jealousizing all of the people who got touched by Eternal Sunshine. It's better to be honest. Unless being honest means drafting Batman Begins.

I'm probably going to have 2 obvious picks and the rest are going to be so random that no one will intersect with my stuff.

However, my top 10 list is probably not going to be my final draft order, which is part of the fun of it. There are other films that list I'd rather draft, just so I can say they're "mine," than going in a sequential order from 1-5 on my best of the decade so far list.

Another interesting question is what years wind up having the most flicks pulled from, and which years have the list. If I remember right, 2003 was a pretty weak year overall. Same with 2000.

I mentioned this in my first post, but really, 2004-2007 have been on a pretty great run. If I had to put money on it, I'd say you'd see more flicks from the last three years than the first four.

Agree and although I have a couple of movies on my list that were "critically acclaimed" most of my choices are ones I love.

That being said I can tell everyone up front that your choices will suck, mine however will reign supreme.

What's going to be the official word on release dates? IMDB's listing of a film's US theatrical release? I ask because certain movies, like Audition, are listed as 1999 some places and 2000 others (as well as being on Mike D'Angelo's 2001 top ten list.)

How do we treat director cuts? Does Alexander have the potential to show up 3 times?
The thing with these drafts is a person's first pick isn't necessarily their #1 choice. It could be the one they think is most likely to be taken by someone else, so they grab it when they can.

My lists usually get shot to hell pretty quickly, so I rarely make one, but with this format I may do it.
I'm expecting my heart to be crushed like it always is in the babe draft. I have 3 must movies but I am hoping to just get 2 of them.

If on of the Alexander's is taken I'll be shocked.

I only have a list of 30 that I'd really want. After that it will be scraping the barrell time. I have a feeling I know what actor will be most represented on the lists but I'll hold off because one of his film is my top pick.

I'm sure most of you will have to drop out of the draft once all three Lord of the Rings movies are taken. And Halo 3 turns out not to qualify, on account of being a videogame.

I'm sure you'll be giddy when all five of the Harrison Ford movies you draft are selected by nobody else.

If all three contain a Colin Ferrell full-frontal, I'm sure it has the potential to show-up three times. On your draft list.

Guess what boy, no Harrison movies are on my list.

Your not supposed to show your picks before the draft Andre.

I hear you. I have one movie which I'm 99% positive no one will choose, as such I'm saving it for last. However if it gets picked, I'll literally cry.

If only it were eligible. Sadly, it came out in 1999. Wild Hogs, though... Damn! I just gave my clincher away!

No one has mentioned Waist Deep yet. Count me among the disappointed.

I'm just going to get the Battle Royale joke out of the way now: it's Battle Royale, isn't it?

Andre and Adam = The Laurel and Hardy of the movie draft.
My main lament is that there really haven't been that many Sinbad movies this decade.
Don't fret Bailey, there's some Tyler Perry material to chose from.

I've solidified my "must have" list and the "runner-up" tier and most of my movies are from the first half of the decade as part of my criteria is whether the movie holds up over time. There were some movies I considered that made my Top 5 the year it came out, but have slipped way down the list today. And there are some recent movies that I think will be classics, but its just too early to tell. But I agree that in the aggregate, Chewers as a whole will most likely pull from recent years.
I am split between picking five of my favorite movies or actually going the route of picking a movie in five seperate genres, which I think would be fun: a comedy or animated movie, a popcorn flick, a drama/thriller, a horror/sci fi/fantasy flick and an indie-type movie.

I think that would be a little more challenging for me.
Warren, you ain't pissing in my yard. I was thinking of opening a similar thread but been busy with the holidays. So actually...thank you.
Look in Rules on release date issue. It's US Theatrical Release.

As far as Director's cuts, etc. One version of the film please. Unless we're talking about a version never before released in a theater. I suppose that would be allowed.
I'm having a hard time scrolling it down to just five. Right now, I've got a list of 15 and I'll just pick them off and hope that other players' picks help to slim it down to a sturdy five.
I'm actually giddy about this. There are 6 people who draft before me. Let's see how many of my top picks vanish before my eyes.
I'm not planning at all, just winging it and seeing what happens.
I look at Round One, Day One and all see are twenty people who are going to clean me out before I even have a chance to pick one movie. There's just no hoping that everyone else has atrocious taste in movies.
I've got a very rough top ten of truly great films of the decade that I've seen. I'm sure there are a few more obscure (or 2007) titles that I know of, but for whatever reason haven't seen, that are also masterpieces. Then I've got 15-20 really good films that I love, and five or so that I think are largely ignored, or misunderstood gems. Of the first two groups, I'll be pleased if I get two.

To put it in smack talk terms- I'd say that if you're able to get five of your top ten movies either you or the majority of the other drafters have shitty taste.
I am fairly certain I can get all five of my choices. Most are kinda obscure, and my quirky taste in films should serve me well. So sure, in fact, I have no qualms in listing them:
1)Children Of Men
2)The Fountain
3)Pan's Labyrinth
4)When Jesse James had his back shot
5)The Incredibles

I'm feeling good.
Let's keep the mentioning of movies to a minimum until they're actually taken in the draft. Messes with the whole thing.
So, for a last bit of clarification.

We post our pick tomorrow and just list the film and the basic info or do you want more info than that?

Or do we save that extra meat for the discussion thread or both?
Just list the film. There will be a separate discussion thread to smack talk.

Edit: Posting the year also would allow us to see which years are getting the most play.
Well, I have a bit of a list. I think what I'm gunning for should be pretty obvious, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

You been reading these message boards long? Those movies are not obscure or quirky to members here. You have no chance to get more than two of those, and will be lucky to get one.
I assume Leper is joking. At least I hope he is.
