Ten bucks on a Del Toro, a Cuaron and a Spielberg going in the first 12 hours.

I bet Spielberg doesn't.

post editing restored for the time being. Don't fuck me.

Thanks Nick!
I just got through watching my first pick. Still holds up.
Very pussy move, Sackley. So pussy a move it just might be genius.

Anyway, I don't care dick all about The Lord of the Rings, so it's no skin off my scrotum.

It's okay to go a little early. I will say that within each group there should be some self-governance. As in, if one person in the group is running the site to post their pick before the rest of the group in every round, that may not be so cool. So sackley went early here and maybe the next time the group comes up, he waits till the other two go. Something like that.

As far as the pick itself, not on my radar. I'd put that flick in the category of Good. I love the opening, Cate Blanchett's voice. It really creates great anticipation for the story, for the films. That third film soured me on LOTR as a whole but I still like the first two films even if I haven't watched them in a while.
There's the fucker. Someone would take it, making everyone else jealous. That choice is giving you uplift.

So far though, my choices are good.
Yeah, I was pretty pumped to be in the first group given my desire to have this. And these drafts are always about the discussions generated, but this was probably the first time I would have been bummed not getting something in particular. Glad I did.

Eternal Sunshine has to be mentioned if you're doing a top ten of the decade, no doubt. Just for the craft alone.
This is going to be a blast. I hope my first choice is still there when it's my turn.
Well, two choices in and I already hate my fellow drafters. I'll be going deep into my bench, I can see.
That went faster than I expected.

Hey Guttenberg. I hope your prick falls off the long way.

There's no way that CoM could go much lower. A science fiction masterpiece on a nerd site draft of movies?

Not sure if it's my favorite movie of the period but in the top three.

Quick turnaround on No Country. Deserved though. Definitely the film that when I talk to people they either say they want to see it or I tell them to see it.
The first group was interesting. I WAS expecting Lord of the Rings & Eternal Sunshine, but for some reason I assumed people would be weary of drafting newer movies so early on. But No Country For Old Men is pretty much a given, I suppose, since it's easily one of the best thrillers ever.

So far my number one and two are still alright. If I can get either of them, I'll be a happy camper. But I feel my films aren't going to be as sought after.

So far all American films, ranging from 2001 to present. A fantasy, sci-fi, comedy, and thriller. One is part of one of the biggest series of films ever, one is a quirky low-key comedy that's a bonafide cult classic, one's a sci-fi masterpiece that hasn't yet gotten the appreciation it deserves, and one is inarguably a bonafide "instant classic".
Nice, Nunz. Saw it on Saturday, and yet it doesn't feel too soon at all for a draft like this.
Let me just make sure I've got this: if everyone in Group B has gone, Group C can go, even if it's not 1:00pm Eastern yet, right?
A quirky low-key comedy? I ... think you're selling it a bit short.
Yeah, I regretted that after I posted. It wasn't as easy to sum up as the other three.

Yes. Nick just provided illustration of that very thing.
I knew CoM/No Country would never drop to me in day 2, a bit surprised they went top 4. Not as shocked as LOTR going 1. It is the best of the series but not one I would want to watch over and over like picks 3/4.

I fear what will be left after 3 rounds.

I think you could have the last 5 picks in the draft overall and still get 5 cool movies. There's been a lot of quality in the last 8 years.
And there we have it. The first bad pick of the draft. Batman Begins.
More power to you, man. I love that movie too.

Yeah, someone always has to take a Jeff Lageman.

Batman Begins was okay. Saw it in the theater for my only viewing. I hear people say they like it so maybe I'll have to revisit. Not sure if anything is there though. Certainly the climax with the elevated train annoyed me as it was a copy of Spider-man 2.

Waaaaay too high though no matter what.
Pan's Labyrinth was one of my two obvious picks.

I thought about not going for it, but it wouldn't be true to what I thought I was one of the best films of the last 7 years. I love "Pan's Labyrinth" for everything that it is and will continue to be for the next few decades.
Pan's Labyrinth. Good one.

edit: Christ, that's a long list for today that I am not on. Getting kinda nervous.
I'm gonna say this right now, and probably get shit for it, but: Two Towers is my favorite of the LOTR trilogy.
It would have been a tough call if both ROTK and FOTR had been available. I know there have probably been deeper or better made or more important films, but this film was such a culmination, not only of Jackson's five-years of work to bring this book to life, not only of the trilogy itself, but of my finally seeing a book that was such a great part of my formative years so lovingly and enthrallingly brought to life. That earns it the #1 slot for me.

I won't give you shit for that. It's the best one.
Batman Begins? Seriously? That's an insult to everything still "on the board."
And now 2 of the 3 LOTR films have been swiped. Only Two Towers remains, but I'm fairly certain it won't be for long. I'll be glad when it's gone. LOTR is such an easy pick. Not too interesting.
I thought drafts were about getting the films you cherish the most, not what sounds interesting to a bunch of strangers.
Meh.
Batman Begins is one of those movies that I suspect I would have liked a lot more if I had seen it in the theatre on opening night. I own the thing on DVD, but, like 'The Prestige,' I really don't have any desire to see it again. Part of this may come from the fact that I saw it for the first time on a crappy TV where all the night scenes were nigh-unwatchable.

OK, so you've seen it a lot, but top 5? Really? That strikes me as a huge reach. And it's not like someone else was snatching that up this round.

I feel like there's been at least two dozen better movies this year, let alone over the past seven.
Fuck, you're right. Let's shut down the thread. Sorry about that, guys.
Hey, more power to ya. "I watched it a bunch of times" just seems like a particularly weak defense of a movie you apparently love.

And I'm not even a "Begins" hater -- I think it's flawed, but I enjoyed it. I'm still baffled it went so early. I ... look forward to seeing what you pick next.
What happened to the ripping and disecting of people's picks? If this is just a favorites draft, then there is no discussion.

Yes, these are our favorites, but wouldn't that mean your first pick is the favorite of the last seven years? Batman Begins is someones favorite of the last seven years? I just find that weird. Just my subjective opinion.

Brings up the DVD generation debate: can you see a film once and still have it be one of your favorite movies? I guess people just don't think so anymore. I've started leaving movies alone after I watch them. Just letting them be. Children of Men is a masterpiece and I have watched that numerous times, but other great films of this era that I may draft I have only seen once.
I love Batman Begins. It wasn't in my Top 20, but it's a solid pick.

Tenenbaums, solid pick. Definitely does a nose dive late in the film but it's fun.
I enjoyed Batman Begins a shitload more than I did Return of the King.
I knew Tenebaums was going to go early, that wasn't first on my draft list but it wound up being no. 1 on my favorite of the decade so far. I love Rushmore more, but Tenebaums is just as good and has held up just as well. It's one of those movies that rewards repeat viewings -- I always get something out of it. Which is funny, considering I called it overrated on these very boards when it first came out. Boy, was I wrong.
Good call. I've actually kinda fallen out of love with it in recent years, but it's still a very good film.

I'd say it's about....2? No, it's about 3 to 3.5 times better than Batman Begins.
Forgot about Tenenbaums. That's a real solid pick.
Man, you guys would crucify my picks. I'm content to sit back and watch.
