Movie Draft: Discussion - Page 9

Friedmans is great. It would have been a fourth round pick for me, if it made it that far.

The rest are all films I love but didn't really affect my shortlist.
I was torn between whether using American Splendor this round or in the third.

The flick that I substituted AS for will make it onto the Chosen list. Hopefully, I'll be the one to put it on there. It's too good to be ignored.
American Splendor isn't a transcendant film for me, but I really do appreciate certain aspects a lot. Like how they were able to tell his story while still slipping in the menial day to day observations that define American Splendor as a comic. And of course, the completely warped meta structure.
Life Aquatic was in my top tier of remaining films. HIgh Fidelity was pretty high up on the seond level, American Splendor more towards the bottom. But still, all ones I would have considered picking at some point when/if they were there. Friedmans was fascinating, though it never grabbed me like some. I wasn't aware we were doing documentaries. I might have to rethink some stuff.
Why on Earth would we not be doing documentaries?
No particular earthly reason, Patrick. Nobody had picked one yet, and they are their own category. When considering this stuff, I had never factored them in, so I guess I wasn't thinking about it.
High Fidelity seems like a perfect pick for a movie draft.

And the Cusacks are a pair of acting siblings where the guy is hotter (listen to podcast 25).
I'm still waiting for the first honest-to-goodness "What the Fuck" pick.

Not to dwell but, um, Batman Begins. In the first round.

But we won't get an out and out bad film until round...4. Maybe the second day of round 3.

And I have yet to see Irreversible (which John Waters named "the best date movie ever"), but I was quite surprised to see it go so soon. But again, any movie that stirs such controversey is bound to have people who are die-hard for it, like Kirby said earlier about Elephant.

I'm really really scared about the next two days.

Disregard, GFC just went, and my #2 pick is now MINE!!!

I can't see not liking Splendor. Technically it's great. Such a wonderfully inventive solution to a narrative problem. There's a great apparatus set up by the filmmakers and yet it still feels jazzy and natural. And then it's just a fun nerdy touching story. And perfect acting. It's a four star film.
Splendor isn't on my list, but if we were simply drafting performances from the decade, Giamatti would be Top 5 easily.

Zodiac was in my top ten.
I think people may get turned off by the ending, which is kinda anti-climatic.

Hot Fuzz was a serious consideration (I think it's the funniest movie of the decade, and maybe funnier than any film of the 90's as well) but I didn't expect it to last.

Zodiac will hurt a certain friend weird hair-ed friend of mine. Hopefully you don't catch his rath. Great pick though.
I'm honestly stunned Zodiac lasted this long. Still the best film I've seen this year, though I'm woefully behind on the fall slate.

Well, I don't buy "Batman Begins" as the true WTF moment of the draft. While it may not be the film that any of us would've posted in the first couple of rounds in the Draft, on the technical and directorial merits alone...it would've at least placed in the 4th or 5th draft.

If you can actually call a film that's hampered by a fucked third act to not be up to snuff, then that's to ignore the endless shitpile of other films from 2000-2007 that could fill up another draft.
Zodiac needed to be taken post haste. Not surprised about Hot Fuzz either. One of my favorite CHUD favorites.
He picked Batman Begins with the fifth pick in the draft. THE FIFTH PICK. It's not even a matter of strategy at that point -- that's just bad taste if you look at the past seven years of film (minus four) and Batman Begins is your go-to choice.

I have no problem with man on man violence. It just didn't move me as much and maybe that says something about our culture, but that wasn't what soured the film for me.

As for the characters being hideous people - so what?
So much hinged on Belluci's reationship with her boyfriend and I just never got it. He was such an asshole. Even in the last/first scene in which we are supposed to see how much they love each other, he treated her like shit. I just didn't understand why she would be with someone like that.

Noe's intention is to outright shock you, not just with the graphic scenes, but with characters' reactions to them. We are a destructive people andnot always as rational as we would like to be. More often than not, we are destroying the things we hold beautiful.
I found the movie more annoying than shocking. The editing seriously made me noxious. Shaky cam filmmaking never particularly bothered me. It did this time around.

I acknowledge that. What I'm saying is that there is still room and time for a bigger "What the Fuck".
Dickson, you son of a bitch! Zodiac was mine! I hope I find you making out with your girlfriend in your car while Hurdy Gurdy Man plays on the radio someday!!!
I just can't help but think that Batman Begins would have been available later, and that something Chris Kent really wanted he lost because he jumped the gun.
I need to see Lost in Translation again. Haven't seen it since it first came out on video.
People either love or hate Sofia. I heard people say her minimilist style is boring. I find it brilliant. She can effect more emotion in one, silent shot than most filmmakers do in their whole film. I was really debating between The Virgin Suicides or Lost in Translation as I love them both dearly. But in the end Murray's performance was to good to pass up.
And the Dumb Cunt Award goes to...ME for thinking that I could hold off on picking American Splendor and Three Burials.

I agree on the last three. Didn't know you didn't like CoM, Rex. Interesting.

He's great playing off Caine in the Sleuth remake. He was also very good in Road to Perdition.

I would so disagree with that. Zodiac can more than hold its own against NCFOM. Very very different films. Both masterpieces.
Zodiac was the one I was hoping would hold out for at least until 5 today. That's still my favorite film in 2007. Keep in mind I haven't seen "No Country" yet, but I watched it again on DVD when it came out and fell in love with it all over again. It's one of those movies that you pop in, saying you'll only watch a few minutes, next thing you know, it's two and a half hours later. It's a movie that was tailor made for my interests, and I love it more than any other film I've seen this year, and it's been a great fucking year for movies.

Of the other selections, American Splendor is pretty spectacular (Cleveland represent, bitches), and Murray losing to Penn over Lost in Translation's pretty criminal. But aside from a few missteps, I'll agree with Patrick, no one's made a "what the fuck" type pick yet.

And Huckabees has some of the best stuff Mark Wahlberg's ever done. "Yes, you do, Jesus hates you."

I dare anyone not to laugh everytime he mentions petroleum.

As for Zodiac, I think I'm going to end up buying the theatrical cut and the director's cut on the same day (January 8th, bitches). I also really need to read Graysmith's book.
Really nice pick, Ratty. I was banking on Before Sunset lasting, because it really seemed to fly under people's radars. I think it's a great movie. And the scenes toward the end (especially the taxi ride) are so sad and well-acted. And then that last scene is just fucking excellent.

Yeah, very good choices. Before Sunset kills. I love that movie. You Can Count on Me is gorgeous as well. Boo.
Before Sunset was one of those I was projecting had a decent chance of still being around when I picked. I guess I missed that plane.

Cache grabbed me from the opening. Powerful stuff. I don't know if it's second round material, but it's a nice pick.

Dirty Pretty Things- Another I haven't seen.
I didn't notice You Can Count On Me. Nice pick, Matchstick. I'd like to have another Lonergan to choose from, but hey, it's still not out!

I had Before Sunset just outside my top ten. Such a special film.
Memories of Murder. Nice!

I thought that it would slip below the radar.
Now I could have seen Spidey 2 going in the first round before Batman Begins.
Pleased to have scored that one. Nothing gets between me and The Delp!

I would love to see Linklater, Delpy and Hawke come back to these characters in another 10 years just to see how they are doing. I don't know what the fuck they'd call it (After Sundown? Hey, The Moon is Out? ), but I'd be there opening day.
I can't believe I forgot about Yi Yi. It wouldn't have changed my choices up to this point, but how I left that off my list I'll never know. It's certainly better than a lot of the stuff I have down.

I just noticed that the list I've been drawing from is largely absent of any Asian Cinema. But, I kind of expected a small group of drafters to be dominating that realm.

So, I'll just keep my toe out of that water.
Yeah, Memories of Murder really is an excellent pick. Such a cruel coda. It's certainly so much like Zodiac and might agree that's it's the better flick. Have to see it again.

You Can Count on Me still blows me away. Both Linney and Ruffalo are amazing in it. One of my all time favorites. Can't believe how long we've been left hanging on Lonergan's next.

I haven't seen 21 of the choices, I have a lot of catching up to do.

I almost wish this was 10 rounds, I have a feeling a lot of gems I'm unaware of would be brought to my attention.

There's usually a post thread where people discuss runner-ups or ineligible picks.

Damn, Leper.

Keep on helping me to whittle down my list.
Kevin Matchstick is officially an asshole. I had no illusions of 25th hour but figured You Can Count On Me would be around till atleast round 4. Really bummed. It's great when you see a movie and discover a guy like Mark Ruffalo.
YOU CAN COUNT ON ME and YI YI. Those two hurt, but great, spectacular choices. Welcome to the weekend rumination for other equal titles.

Had a feeling we'd see Yi Yi.

Wasn't sure where Dre would go but that makes a lot of sense, nice choice.
