Movie Draft: Discussion - Page 20

I can understand digging Bad Boys 2, but for me the insanity that is the ending can't make up for the rest of the long-ass movie. Even as a "so good it's bad" movie, I don't find it that entertaining. But I can understand that someone might.

As for the Bourne movies, I haven't seen any of them, so I can't comment on your alleged twatness.

Bad Boys 2 is awesome.

I know The Devil's Rejects gets a fair amount of love around here, but I found it to be just plain dull.

Is there still a CHUD-fave horror movie available? Can I have one more pick to get it?
Gentlemen, please. Actually, I liked Anya's choices. But the this sucks, no that sucks kind of arguing has got to go.

Unless we're talking about The Passion of the Christ.

Yes, well you're a twat.

There are two really excellent horror movies that haven't been picked yet that I was heavily considering. I'm surprised they haven't gone yet.

There're more than two, in my opinion. A zombie, a ghost, and a hos- er, water monster.

Grizzly Man, nice. That was the runner-up for my documentary pick. Fascinating fucking movie.
It's probably taking unfair advantage, but The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a great bonus round pick.

There's still some movies I'm surprised weren't picked. I'll post my 7 best free agents tonight.

But yeah, awesome film, the finest Herzog has made in many a year.
I liked Rescue Dawn quite a bit. Definitely had some of the classic Herzog touches. I had considered it and Grizzly Man as a double feature possibility.

I don't know if I could limit it to seven. I'll post mine after everyone is done.

And The Devil's Rejects is still boring. My twatness isn't making that go away.

Besides yourself who do you think won? Be helpful if the Your Movies thread was completed. Got a top 3 but need to see a few more completed lists.

Bonus round was too much, cut too deep into the pool of films I think. Wouldn't do that again.

Enjoyed this though. Have a good holiday all.
So, you're not going to handle the next draft?
I got that he was referring to the Bonus Rounds. It's just the rest of it seemed vague.

It was either The Passion of the Jews or Freddy Got Fingered, you all will turn the corner on both films and appreciate them as the underrated classics of this decade.
Personally I don't think the bonus round was too much. It's been said a bunch, but there were still a ton of good films left. And if we do a full decade next time there will be, presumably, even more remaining on the board.

Obviously the longer a draft goes the more crap is going to rise to the surface, but a certain amount of it is just bad taste. I think that needs to come out, as the draft is supposed to reflect the drafter, not necessarily an objective list of the decade's best.

I also think, no matter how many rounds you have, once the draft gets towards the end people will start taking those movies that make somebody else raise an eyebrow, but they justify by saying they can watch it thousands of times in a row on dvd.

Certainly nobody wants to slog through a week of bad superhero and sequel selections, but I think a few rounds peppered with very questionable picks is actually kind of important in getting a sense of an individual's taste.

Isn't the draft arbitrary anyway? My top 5 looks nothing like my selections here.

It was fun to see what was available, and to see how people reacted to my pick, good or bad, but your 5 choices definitely dont determine what you think are the best 5 films of the 00's. Dont get that idea from a draft. Get that from someone's top 5 list.
Not that it really matters, but I don't think a top five list necessarily determines somebody's tastes. It can illustrate them to a certain degree, some with more accuracy than others. On the other hand, it's easy to love the best of the best. The real question is, when pickings get slim, do you also love Best of the Best?

Haute Tension overrated? Only by people who liked it. Many hated. It's the definition of extremely divisive, which to me makes it more intersting than a dozen other pictures mentioned.

It's also an incredibly shot piece of cinema, regardless of the narrative jiggery pokery (which I still apareciate the audaciousness of -- not the originaliy, just the balls to the wall, giallo-style ludicrousness of).

And JSA is probably also better than Lady Vengeance.

I was talking about the bonus rounds, not doing those again. The reason I went with a 5 round draft is to set tighter parameters on picking. Like I said previously, I've been in a lot of 10 round drafts and I think they just wear out. Not just the picks but the conversation, the reason for doing it in the first place. That's all.

I'll return in the new year with something new. Not sure what seems best to do yet. I'm not doing a vote on it though. Democracy is overrated.
Haute Tension was great up until the last few minutes. It's the rare movie that would have been better with the standard horror ending where the bad guy gets killed, but twitches his fingers a little before the credits.

I can vouch for this. I remember some drafts that started off like gangbusters but by the seventh or eighth rounds turned into the Bataan Death March. The discussion threads went from fevered debate to endless variations on "Nice pick". People stopped picking, and the whole thing turned into an obligation more than something fun.

I missed the bonus round because the Ice Storm knocked out my power (along with 500,000 other homes in Oklahoma) on Sunday night and I have been without since (until now)

That's funny. My power was knocked out by Ride With The Devil.
