Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - Page 2

The sequel pissed me off because the two animal mutants that Shredder made should have been Bebop and Rocksteady, not Tokah and Razar. Also, it fails because parents groups complained so much about the weapons use in the first one that the Turtles almost never used their trademark equipment and instead were forced to fight with...ugh...combat coldcuts.
Also, it should be mentioned that 'T-U-R-T-L-E POWER' is to 'Ninja Rap' as 'Miss Fat Booty' is to 'Laffy Taffy'.
It did immediately make me run out and buy a yoyo, but yeah, the first one is is just so much better in terms of quality. Shredder was actually menacing and as a kid, I sat on the edge of my seat wondering how exactly the gang was going to beat him on that rooftop. The ending sequence is just so great.
I was addicted to Secret Of The Ooze as a youngster, but for whatever reason only saw the first one maybe once. I do remember it being grimmer than the second.

But I don't think a thread has ever made me want to go and track down a half-forgotten movie more than this one has. And the fact that it's for a Ninja Turtles movie means you should probably weep for me.

T-U-R-T-L-E Power!
T-U-R-T-L-E Power!
T-U-R-T-L-E Power!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
In a half shell, they're the heroes four.
In this day and age who could ask for more?
The crime wave is high with muggings mysterious.
Our police and detectives are furious,
'Cause they can't find the source,
Of this lethally evil force.
This is serious so give me a quarter.
I was a witness, get me a reporter!
Call April O'Neil in on this case, and
You'd better hurry up, there's no time to waste!
We need help, like quick, on the double.
Have pity on the city, man it's in trouble!
We need heroes like the Lone Ranger
When Tonto came pronto, when there was danger.
They didn't say they'd be there in half an hour,
'Cause they displayed...Turtle Power!

Now our Miss Reporter was hot on the trail.
Determined to put these crooks in jail.
She spied the bad guys and saw what happened,
But before she knew it, she fell in a trap and caught!
Yeah, she was all alone.
With no friends, and no phone.
Now this was beyond her worst dreams,
'Cause she was cornered by some wayward teens.
Headed by Shredder they were anything but good.
Misguided, unloved, they called them The Foot.
They could terrorize and be angry youths, and
They mugged the people. Who needed proof?
Then from out of the dark came an awesome sound!
Shouted "Cowabunga!" as they hit the ground.
From the field of weeds the heroes rescued the flower
'Cause they possessed...Turtle Power!
Do you stand for what you believe in?
And find the strength to do what's right?
That's TURTLE POWER!
Heroes in half shell, they're on a mission.
When there's a battle got the enemy wishin'
That they stayed at home, instead of fightin'
These ninja masters with moves like lightnin'.
They were once normal, but now they're mutants.
Splinter's the teacher so they are the students.
Leonardo, Michaelangelo, and Donatello,
Make up this group with one other fellow
Raphael. He's the leader of the group
Transformed from the norm by the nuclear goop.
Pizza's the food that's sure to please,
These ninjas are into pepperoni and cheese.
Back to the story, it's not hard to find.
Ninjas not just of the body but of the mind.
These are the words that their master instructed,
But a letter from Shredder has Splinter abducted.
That was the last straw, spring into action.
Step on The Foot, now they're gonna lose traction.
Now this is for real, so you fight for justice,
Your shell is hard so you shout, "They can't bust us four!
Like some old coffee table."
Since you were young you've been willing and able
To defeat the snake, protect the weak,
Fight for rights and the freedom to speak.
Now the villian is showin' so you take a stand.
Back to the wall, put your sword in you hand.
Remember the words of your teacher, your master:
"Evil moves fast, but good moves faster!"
Then light, shining for your illumination:
Good versus Evil equal Confrontation.
So when you're in trouble to give in and go sour,
Try to rely on YOUR...Turtle Power!

"Mama? Mama!!!"

That is the greatest scene ever, oh how I laughed.
I heard Koteas still signs breasts and offers private cricket lessons.

Pretty dark ending too. Crushing the villain in a trash compactor. You wouldn't see that in today's ... eh fantasy... action... family... turtle movie.

As a joke, no less. "Oops!"

I think Jonothan Banks might have discovered another CHUD movie. Remember when you were a kid, when once in a while a cool person like a teenager would give you the time of day? Parents didn't count. It wasn't for very long, but you felt like you had peeked into mature society, that for a second you had actually made someone you respected see you were more than just a little kid. I think this film did that for me. I felt like I was being given a lot of credit as a viewer by a film that was obviously aimed at me.
As much as I'd love to take credit this is Jonathon Banks' baby.
Oops, sorry Jonathan. I don't know Pat, this just seemed like a thread you would do.

I honestly thought there'd be just a few snarky comments and this thing would peter out. I thought I might catch some flak for liking it so much. So it's really cool to see the response. I know it's not great cinema or anything, but there's something to getting your tastes so enthusiastically validated, both as a pre-geek kid and a post-geek adult.
I'll say it right now: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is better than Aliens.
Wrong. This film: Sweet. The series: bad as you're afraid it is.
I dunno, I got the first set of the original show a few years back and haven't regretted it. It's actually pretty amusingly written...not sure how it held up in the later series, but the first ten episodes were a cut above your normal Saturday morning dreck.
I haven't seen Turtles in Time since the theatres, but my Dad saw all three of them with me and my brother, and he says that he enjoyed the third the most by far. I'm going to see it again before I give up on it.
At the very least, the third one brings back Casey Jones, even if it wastes him by making him a babysitter.
"A Jose Conseco bat? Tell me, you didn't pay money for this."

"Why? Why - Oh I don't know, 'cause I wanted to redecorate. You know, a couple of throw pillows, a TV news reporter, what do ya think?"

Donatello: "You're a claustrophobic."
Casey Jones: "You want a fist in the mouth? I've never even looked at another guy."

I couldn't get over how awful the costumes were in the third movie. I'm assuming the Henson shop wasn't involved.
Now, there was a video game entitled "Turtles In Time", but the third film never carried that subtitle, am I right?

IMDB says Turtles in Time was a working title, but I distinctly remember hearing that name in the media at least a few times.
Hang on, there are actually three moments that always make me laugh. I forgot about SHUT IT.

It still can't top this, though.

Saw the movie too young as a kid to get that joke, but watching it on tv many years later I got a great laugh out of that line.. so this movie has aged pretty well for me. I used to prefer the sequel as a kid (lord knows why, dug Tokka and Razar? Vanilla Ice was still 'cool'? help me.. Super Shredder?) but the older I get the more I appreciate the original.

Darker in tone and content, slightly more adult dialogue, fighting with actual weapons.. CASEY JONES.. the roof-top(s)/antique store fight, and damn the Shredder was bad ass in it, and they KILLED HIM (or did a heck of a job trying at least). The whole "Momma? Momma!!" scene in Secret of the Ooze robbed a lot of his menace.. plus the fact Super Shredder went down like a bitch.

Glad everyone isn't "too old" for this one.
I'm curious to see if anyone actually likes this movie who didn't grow up with it. I'll always love the turtles, but it still feel like it would be awfully hard for an adult to like them whatsoever.

Paging me.

As someone who was definitely not a child when this came out, I still find it surprisingly well done. I was shocked at the time at how entertaining it was.

"NEVER...TURN YOUR BACK.....ON AN ENEMY..."

This movie was like when the scrambly porn came in clearly for a few minutes.
This is one of those things where I couldn't humanly separate my nostalgic feelings for the movies themselves from any positive qualities they have otherwise. I'm going to have to watch these again in the next day or so.

I actually quote this in my best Brooklynese anytime someone mentions cricket, and no one ever gets it. Then I sheepishly pretend I didn't say anything at all.

I generally dislike most of my childhood favorites as an adult (Goonies, Willow, The Ewok Adventure, the original Ninja Turtles cartoon), but I still genuinely adore this film. I remember my best friend's father liking it quite a bit too when he took us to see it. Splinter practicing ninjitsu from his cage as a regular rat got a huge laugh out of him. In the good way.

Exactly. I must have been about 12 when it came out, but I was never obsessed with it. I didn't see it in the theater, so I must have been 13 or 14 when I saw it. But what surprised me was that I liked it so much on its own terms. Someone mentioned above how it's one of the great comic book movies, and the more I think about that, the more I agree. It's not one you think about because the marketing people obviously wanted it aimed at kids, but it really is one of the best origin stories that's been done so far.
I'm glad they kept the cartoon and movie worlds seperate. Once you have Bebop and Rocksteady, you're only a few connections away from Krang. And we don't want a movie version of Krang.
Actually, that man-in-the-tummy from Total Recall was almost a movie version of Krang. Only from Mars instead of Dimension X.

Speak for yourself! Surely a live-action version of this suit would have changed cinema in ways not yet comprehendable by the human brain.

I mean, it's just plain badass.

There was something about the blank expression on that robot's face that I always thought was hilarious as a kid. That toy doesn't do it justice.
Just givin' ya a hard time, Patrick

I wanted to make Krang's robot face my new avatar, but it's suprisingly difficult to find a decent picture of the thing.. atleast at work with all the blocked websites and such. -_-

I always liked Rocksteady though!

when these movies were popular, pizza hut had a promotion going where they were giving away/selling ninja turtles tapes. I lip synched and danced to no.6 walk straight for the second grade talent show.

WALK STRAIGHT! No need to muuttaaaatttee...

Whie that has the potential for coolness. That certainly would've freaked the shit out of a lot of kids.

I was always curious as to why Usagi Yojimbo would just show up and for that matter. Who the hell was the Duck guy guy wearing the pilot's uniform? I remember seeing that action figure but never for the life knew who that who that character was.

One of my favorite soundtrack songs to any movie was

Spin that Wheel! by Ya Kid K and Hi Tek 3

helped make this movie great!
Off in the distance, the game's dragging on,
There's strikes on the batter, some runners are on.
I don't know the inning, I've forgotten the score.
The whole team is yelling and I don't know what for.
Then suddenly everyone's looking at me
My mind has been wandering; what could it be?
They point at the sky and I look up above
And a baseball falls into my glove!

Here in right field, it's important you know.
You gotta know how to catch, you gotta know how to throw,
That's why I'm here in right field, just watching the dandelions grow!

It's "That's why I'm playing right field, way out where the dandelions grow..."

Come on, man.

I didn't bother to check what I was copying and pasting. If I had, I would have added "makin' it great!" to the end.

Also, at the beginning the second stanza it's "Iiiiiii....plaaaay....RIGHT FIELD...it's important you know..."

Who's trading on my nostalgia with second rate transcriptions? I see a BBB complaint in my future.
Spin that Wheel is still a good song.
I had this book of the entire soundtrack that came with a kazoo. Within days I knew how to play everything from "T-U-R-T-L-E Power" to "Spin That Weel" on it.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!111

holy shit the right field pizza hut song! reminding me like an amnesiac castaway on a small pacific island of my midwest life long before days of beaches and coconuts and suicide contemplation. Fucking. CHUD. Blowing my mind and swallowing the load like a champ!

Alright guys, let's just be careful...I don't want this thread to go too far...

My brother and my dad went to see the turtles perform live once but I was too sick to go. They bought me back a foam pizza that Donatello threw out to the audience that my dad caught. I was so fucking jealous. Still am.

Fuckin' story of my life man. I actually still quote this movie fairly regularly, I guess it got burned into my brain when I was a kid, and nobody ever gets it! Whenever someone does I emit a high pitched squealing noise and jump up and down a few times.

Also, that TMNT fan is nuts! I saw that clip awhile back and it was both depressing and hysterically funny.
